His work has little to do with either the Flemish mannerists of the style of Hendrik Cornelisz Vroom (q.v.) and his followers, nor with Jan Porcellis (q.v.) and the Dutch realists. This could partly be explained by his leaving Antwerp in 1600, at the age of twenty—three, for the inland city of Utrecht, where he lived for the rest of his long life and where he painted marines from memory, undisturbed by the influence of other marine painters. First of all he was a genre painter, strongly influenced by the Brueghels (q.v.) and using their colourful palette. His seas and ships are in the Flemish mannerist tradition and the only concession he ever made to the rising Dutch School was to change his seas from green to grey in his later pictures, a convention followed by his sons and pupils Abraham and Isaac. They adopted their father’s style very closely but never emulated his quality. A third son, Cornelisz, was a history painter. Perhaps the Willaerts were not so cut off from the main stream as their work suggests. There are at least three paintings by Adam of the voyage from Margate to Flushing of the Elector and Electress Palatine in 1613, in which it is clear he had a fair idea what the Prince Royal looked like. Three of these pictures, which deal with the embarkation from different viewpoints, are in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, in the Royal Collection, and Ainmthe Scheepvaart Museum, Amsterdam (one in each); a fourth showing the fleet approaching Flushing is in private hands. However, even when dealing with historical subjects Willaerts imparts the feeling of a fairy tale. PLATES: 36, 37, 38, 39; COLOUR PLATE: IV. EXAMPLES: Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (5): including two large paintings of Heemskirk’s victory over the Spanish at Gibraltar in 1607, widely spaced in date, one painted 1617 and one 1639. The younger brother of Abraham (q.v.) and the son and pupil of Adam (q.v.); he apparently did not travel like his brother and concentrated on painting marines in his native town. His work is similar to his father’s, but weaker. As he lived on for nearly thirty years after his father’s death the updated ships prevent confusion with the latter’s work. EXAMPLES: National Maritime Museum, Greenwich (I): a French galley and Dutch men-of-war off a fort. Boymans van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam (1): river scene. Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (1): share scene with jisherfolk. Centraal Museum der Gemeente, Utrecht (I): shore scene with Amsterdam ship. WILLIAMS, J.W. , Probably an American ship portraitist, but one strongly influenced by the Marseilles School; he was working in the first quarter of the 19th century. The Peabody Museum of Salem has a watercolour dated 1809. WILLIAMSON, Samuel 17924342 Born Liverpool, 1792; died Liverpool, June 7th, 1842. In 1810 he was elected an associate member of the Liverpool Academy, and a full member the following year. Also in 1811 he exhibited his only picture at the Royal Academy, but not a marine. EXAMPLES: Walker Art "Gallery, Liverpool (4): North Shore, Liverpool; New Brighton Shore; fishing boats in heavy seas; fishing boats entering harbour. WILLIAMSON, W.H. This artist, with a style similar to many mid—l9th century marine painters, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1853, 1855 and 1875, and at the British Institution between 1856 and 1865. He must have travelled as his subjects include views such as “Mouth of the River Scheldt” and “Fishing boats off Fort Rouge, Calais”. PLA TE: 54]. WILLOUGHBY, Robert 1768-1843 He was a pioneer of the Hull school of marine paintingland ship portraiture. He had a house painting business, but seems to have devoted himself to easel painting in later life. The Hull Maritime Museum has nine of his paintings. The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, has a portrait of an old merchant captain signed “R. Willoughby, pinx” which may also be by him. The Peabody Museum of Salem has a painting of the Whaler Molly in the ice. WILSON, H.S. A British ship portraitist, probably working in Liverpool in the third quarter of the 19th century. The Peabody Museum of Salem has two watercolours. . I tine») /(amt:/i«»2 i " 201
