41 Bridge Down Bridge Canterbury Kent CT4 5BA April 18 2000 Dear Mrs Gleadall, Your letter to Mr Williamson has been passed to me for reply, so I apologise for the slight delay in my response. I hope this has reached you before you travel to England. The reason is that Mr Williamson unfortunately died rather suddenly last November, and I found myself in possession of his papers relating to Bridge. I very much regret to say that there is as yet no book on our local history, though attempts are currently being made to put one together. All I can say about the name Jarvis therefore is that it is certainly a local name. My best source is the national census for 1881, which is available on CDROM. It does not of course link up with Peter Jarvis, since he died in 1826. There were however at that time four families of that name in Bridge, a total of 16 people, 12 male and 4 female, only one of whom was born Jarvis. All the adult males were Agricultural Labourers: Charles (born 1810), John (1815), Henry (1828), Henry (1840), Edward (1855), Joseph (1858), William (1859). Only three of these were born in Bridge: Henry (1828), Joseph and William. 18 people are listed as having been born in Bridge, 10 male, 8 female. 7 of these males are among the 12 mentioned above. In addition there are John (1813) living off rent from property in Dover, William R. (1835) a farmer at Upper Hardres (near Bridge) and a child John (1879), born in Sturry. The women are mostly servants elsewhere. 31 other Jarvis's are recorded in the census from villages nearby and Canterbury itself. Similarly, 43 were born in Bridge, but live in nearby villages. If you can find someone living in 1881, we can perhaps go further. There is still someone of the name in Bridge: Alfred (Alfie), of The Lodge, Little Bridge Place, Brewery Lane, CT4 5LF, who owns the local photographic studio. I can't tell you about his antecedents, though. I hope some of this is useful to you. Yours sincerely, MM Raraty George & Mary Gleadafl “Beacon House” Beacon Hill, Lower Estate, St. Michael L Barbados. West Indies 23 "d /\A_a..Vo/u QDDD )1L9.0/'»
