Howard and Son, giving employment to at. large number of hands. The East. Kent Lunatic Asylum was ' erected in 1875 on Clmrtlunn Downs, at a. cost of £250,000. from designs by Messrs. Giles and Cough. It consists of central entrance. with oflices and - committee-rooms. two blocks rm either side, six in the rear, and a. chapel in the centre. There is accommodation for 500 males and 600 females. Three blocks were added to the Asylum in 1898. at a cost of £40,000. The aver- age number now is 1045.
