BROADSTAJRS. anciently called “Br-adst-Jw,"' is a‘

pleasant little town and watering place. wizh a station
on the South Eastern and C-hatham railway. 2% miles
. from Ramsgate 77 from London and
in Margate. situated on a small ba_\ <.n the
st of the Isle of Thanet. and within the rtivil
parish :2. Peter. in the rural deaiiery of Westl‘ere.
and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury: it was
from 1879 under a Local Board. but is now govcrnesl.
under the “Local Government Act. 1594“ «'36 and 57
Vict. c. 731. by a District Council of twelve members.
In puisuance of an Order of the County Council. made
‘ W - the name of the Urban District was altered to
irs and St. Peters, and now comprises four
ward.<——Central, Pierremont. Kingsgate and St. Peters
The modern extension of the town ‘of Broadstairs has a
fine promenade on the summit of low cliffs. but in the
older part the s't!'eets are narrow and tortuous. Both
Broadstairs and St. Peters are lighted with gas and bi-
electricity br a company. and supplied with water from
works erected in 1859 and extended in 1876. and again
in IQC3 and 1907 at a cost of about £51000. the property
of the Frban District Council; the water is obtained
from adits in the chalk extending about 1% miles inland.
The ecclesiastical parish was formed out of St. Peters
on Sept :7. i850. The parish church of the Holy
TI‘llllI_V', erected in 1340. is of flint with stone facings in
the Early English style. and has a tower containing a
clock and one hell: the addition of the north and south
aisle‘ was completed in 1915: there are 630 sittings.
The ’ i of hapticins dates from the year r850.

road,  dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea. The
Baptist chapel. in High street, founded in 1790, was
restored in rgog, and seats 250 persons. The Baptist
chapel, in Queen’s road. built in 1908 at a cost of
,{,"_>.ooo. is an edifice of brick with stone dressings, in
the Gothic style. from designs by .\Ir. E. E. Mood)’.
architect: it includes a clock tower. and will seat about
453 persons: the old chapel alongside. built in 1897. is
now used as a Sunday school. There is also a Congre-
<_rational chapel. erected in r876, with 350 sittings: a
Wesleyan Methodist chapel and a preaching room belong-
ing to the Brethren. Bleak House. standing in a
prominent position on the clifi, is stated to be associated
with the novel. “Bleak House." of the late Charles
Dickens. There is a bathing establishment and libraries,
as well as marine villas and many lodging houses. and
several good hotels. including the “Grand” and the
“ Royal .—\lbion." York gate, an ancient arch of flint-
work. once forming part of the defences of the place.
was built by George Cullmer about 1540, and repaired
in 1795 by Sir John Henniker bart.; the portcullis and
gates have disappeared: near it are the remains of a
chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Braclstow and once
containing an image held in great veneration by
mariners. who were wont to salute it in passing by
lowering their sails. The area of the Urban District is
3,030 acres: rateable value £;6,622, and population in
1911. 9.917. The population of Holy'I‘rinity ecclesiastical
parish in 1911 was 4,779.
