The village is lighted with gas by a local limited company. The church of St. Peter is of flint, in the Norman style, with some additions of the Early English period, and has a tower with spire, con- taining a clock and 4 bells: the windows are stained: within a recess is a recumbent effigy of a man in robes, in low relief: the church was repaired and partly rebuilt about 1860, and afiords 350 sittings, 80 being free. The register dates from the year 1565. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the Vicarage of Patrixbourne, joint net yearly value £330. with 38 acres of glebe and resi- lence, in the gift of the Marquess Conyngham, and held ;ince 1897 by the Rev. Hubert Knight M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, who resides at Patrixbourue. A war memorial was erected in 1920 by public subscrip- tion in the north—east of the churchyard, to the memory of 13 men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18. The navigable Medway passes through the parish and has -a wharf at Branbridges.
