BBOADSTAIRS. anciently called “Bradstow.” is a I pleasant little town and watering place, with a station It on the South Eastern section of the Southern railway. : 24} miles north from Bamsgate, 77 from London and 3} south-east from Margate, situated on the eastern coast of the Isle of Thanet. in the rural deanery of Thanet and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury; it was from 1879 under a Local Board, but is now governed under the Local Government Act, 1894 (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), by a District Council of twelve members. In pursuance of an Order of the County Council, made in 1894, the name of the Urban District was altered to Broadstairs and St. Peter’s, and now comprises four wards——Central. Pierremont, Kingsgate and St. Peter’s. The modern extension of the town of Broadstairs has a fine promenade on the summit of low cliffs, but in the older part the streets are narrow and tortuous. Both Broadstairs and St. Peter’s are lighted with gas and by electricity by a company. Water is supplied by the Urban District Council; the works were originally erected in 1859, and extended in 1876, 1903 and 1907; in 1925 the pumping and storage plant. was reorganised and a systeni. of water softening introduced; the water is obtained from adits in the chalk extending about 1; miles inland. The ecclesiastical parish was formed out of St. Peters on Sept. 27, x850. The parish church of the Holy Trinity is an enlargement of a small church originally built in 1529: it is of flint stone in the Romanesque style. consisting of an unusually wide nave with aisles: there are 818 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1850. The living was declared a rectory Dec. 6. I867. net yearly value £4.40, with residence, built in 1870, in the gift of the vicar of St. Peter’s, and held since r909 by the Rev. ' Broadstairs &: St. Peter's Urban District Council Fire Brigade Station, St. Peter's road ,_ Park road, is dedicated to Our Lady Star of the Sea. Christ Church, Free Church of England, is in Osborne road. The Baptist chapel, in High street, founded in 1790, was restored in 1909, and seats 250 persons. The Baptist chapel, in Queen’s road, built in 1908' at a cost of £2,000, is an edifice of brick with stone dressings, in the Gothic style, from designs by Mr. E. E. Moody, architect: it includes a. clock tower, and will seat about 450 persons: the old chapel alongside, built in 1897, is now used as a Sunday school. There is also 3 Congra- gational chapel, erected Ill 1876, with 350 sittings; a Wesleyan Methodist chapel and a preaching room be- longing to the Brethren. Bleak House, standing in a prominent position on the clifi, is stated to be associated with the novel, “Bleak House,” of Charles Dickens. There is a bathing establishment and libraries, as well as marine villas and manyyboarding houses, and several good hotels, including the Grand and the Royal Albion. The Public Library, in the Broadway, comprises read- ing room and lending department, and contains about 6,000 volumes. York gate, an ancient arch of flint- ‘ work, once forming part of the defences oi the place, was built by George Cullrner about 1540, and repaired in 1795 by Sir John Henniker bart.; the porrtculhs and gates have disappeared; near it are the remains of a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Bradstoyr and once containing an image held in great veneration by mariners, who were wont to salute it in passing by lowering their sails. The area of the Urban District, which includes the parish of St. Peter Extra. is 3,303 acres; the population in 1921 was 15,471. The popu- lation of the Urban District wards in 1921 was—Central, 4.565; Kingsgate, 2,878; Pierremont, 483.3,. and 55- Peter’s, 3,700.
