BROADSTAIRS, anciently called “Bradstow,” is a pleasant little town and watering place, with a station on the South Eastern section of the Southern railway, 25 miles north from Bamsgate, 77 from London and 3} south-east from Margate, situated on the eastern coast of the Isle of Thanet, in the rural deanery of Thanet and archdeacoury and diocese of Canterbury; it was from r879 under a. Local Board, but is now governed under the Local Government Act, 1894 (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), by a. District Council of twelve members. In pursuance of an Order of the County Council, made in Urban District was altered to Broadstairs and St. Peter’s, and now comprises four wards——Central, Pierremont, Kingsgate and St. Peter’s. The modern extension of the town of Broadstairs has a fine promenade on the summit of low clifis, but in the older part the streets are narrow and tortuous. Both Broadstairs and St. Peter’s are lighted with gas and by electricity by a company. Water is supplied by the Urban District Council; the works were originally erected in 1859, and extended in 1876, 1903 and 1907; in 1925 the pumping and storage plant was reorganised and a system of water softening introduced; the water is obtained from adits in the chalk extending about 1} miles inland. The ecclesiastical parish was formed out of St. Peter’s on Sept. 27, 1850. The parish church of the Holy Trinity is an enlargement of a small church originally built in 1829: it is of flint stone in the Romanesque style, consisting of an unusually wide nave with aisles: there are 818 sittings. (Mrs.), baker, Com- mercial rd PATRIXBOURNE (or Patricksbourne) is a parish and village, pleasantly situated in healthy country, the Lesser Stour running through the village, which is three- quarters of a mile from the road from Canterbury to Ashford, half a mile south from the Bekesbourne station on the Favershum and Dover section of the Southern railway, and 3 miles south-east from Canterbury; it is in the Canterbury division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, hundred of Bridge and Petham, rural district of Bridge-Blean, petty sessional division of Home, county court district of Canterbury. rural deanery of East Bridge, archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. The church of St. Mary, a fine structure of the Norman period, is of flint with stone dressings, and has a tower with spire containing a clock and’ 3 bells: there are some stained windows and monuments to the Conyngham family: the church has 180 sittings. At the east end of the churchyard is a memorial, erected by public subscription, to six men connected with this parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18- The register of buptisms and burials datesirom‘ the year 1556; marriages from 1560. Wm. farmer, Highland Bridge) Court farm EAST PECKHAM is a large straggling village and parish, 2§- miles north from PaddockWood station on the main line of the Southern railway, 2 north-west from Yalding station on the Strood and Paddock Wood section of the same railway, 6 north—east from Ton- bridge, 3 west-south-west from Maidstone and 33 from London: it is in the Sevenoaks division of the county, lathe of Aylesford, Twyford and Littlefield hundreds, county court district oi‘ Maidstone, petty sessional division, rural district and rural deanery of Malling, archdeaconry of Tonbridge and diocese of Rochester. The navigable Medway passes through the parish and has a wharf at Branbridges. The church of St. Michael is of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and has a tower containing 6 tells: the chancel was restored in 1855, and the remainder of the church in 1863: there are three memorials to the Twysden family and three to the Cook family, and some remains of ancient stained glass: there are also tablets in memory of Capt. John Norwood V.C. 5th Dragoon Guards, 2nd Lt. John Norton Norwood and Capt. Francis Hart Dyke, who fell near Yprcs, 27th Sept. 1917: in 1917 a new altar and reredos was erected in memory of Lt.-Col. Cook, and the aisle was converted into a chapel: the exterior of the church was thoroughly repaired in 1913, and the churchyard was enlarged by the addition of a quarter of an acre: in 1921 a lych gate was erected in memory of the men connected with this parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18: the church has 400 sittings.
