CHARTHAM is a parish and village, near the road from Canterbury to Ashford, on the river Stour, with a station on the Ashford and Ramsgate branch of the Southern railway, 3; miles south-west from Canterbury. 11 north-east from Ashford, 65 miles from London by rail and 56 by road, in the Canterbury division of the county, lathes of St. Augustine and Scray, hundreds of Felborough and Westgate, rural district of Bi-idge—l3lean, county court district of Canter- bury, petty sessional division of Home, rural (leancry of West Bridge and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. Chartham is built round a green, with the parsonage and church on the south side. The church of St. Mary is of flint, stone and brick, chiefly in the Early Decorated style, and has a tower of Perpendicular date, containing a clock and 6 bells : the chancel windows retain much of the original stained glass, and there are numerous brasses, including one to Sir Robert de Septvans, 1306 : in 1921 a brass mural tablet was put up hearing the names of the men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Horton annexed, net yearly value £700, with residence and 50 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and is now held by the Rev. Morrice. Lionel Man M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, hon. C.F. TheI}Old Tithe Barn was converted into a parish hall by the Rev. E}, J. Hazledine (rector 19124920). On the village green is a cross, erected in 1920 as a memorial to the men connected with the parish who fell in the Great VVar, 1914-18. There are three Methodist churches and a Salvation Army hall‘. A cemetery of 2 acres was laid out in 1899 and a Burial Board of 11 members formed. There is a paper factory. On Chartham Downs were formerly a considerable number of barrows, now ploughed up, in which at va1'ious times have been found human remains, pottery and trinkets, mostly of the Anglo-Saxon period, and on the Swarling Downs are three lines of entrenchments. The Chartham Mental Hospital was erected in 1875 on Chartham Downs at a cost of £250,000, and covers with its grounds an area of 204 acres; the buildings will hold 538 men and 569 women. Mystole Park is the residence of Mrs. Virgil Pomfret. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. Mrs. Virgil Pomfret, the trustees of the late Henry VVilliam Arnold esq. H. D. Barnes esq. and Percy Mount esq. are the largest landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and hops. The area is 4,552 acres of land and 17 of water; the population in 1921 was 2,959, and in 1931, 3,533. VILLAGES DIRECTORY; . BRIDGE, so named from its situation in a. valley on the Dover road at a bridge over a feeder of the Stour, is a parish; in the rural district of Bridge-Blean, with a station on the Canterbury and Folkestone line of the Southern railway, and is 1% miles south from Bekesbourne station on the same system, and 3 South-east from Canterbury, in the Canter- bury division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, hundred of Bridge and Petham, petty sessional division of St. Augustine’s, Canterbury, county court district of Canterbury, rural deanery of East Bridge and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. The village is lighted with gas by the East Kent Gas Co. Ltd. The church of St. Peter is of flint, in the Norman style, with some additions of the Early English period, and has a tower with spire, containing a clock and 4 bells : the windows are stained : within a recess is a recumbent efligy of a man in robes, in low relief : the church was repaired and partly rebuilt about 1860, and affords 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1565. The living is a Vicarage, annexed to the Vicarage of Patrixbourne, joint net yearly value £556, with 33 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Marquess Conyngham, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Hubert Knight M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, who resides at Patrixbourne. In 1920 a cross was erected in the north- east of the churchyard in memory of 13 men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18. The Methodish church, built in 1894, is of corrugated iron and wood, and seats 150 persons. The principal land- owners are the Marquess Conyngham, who is lord of the manor, and Earl Sondes. The soil is chalky; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and hops; the area is 1,171 acres; the population in 1921 was 699, and in 1951, 713. Post, M. 0., T. 8: T. E. D.
