BRIDGE, so named from its situation in a valley on the Dover road
at a. bridge over a feeder of the Stour, is a parish in the rural district
of Bridge—Blean, with a station on the Canterbury and Folkestone line
of the Southern railway, and is 1?; miles south from Bekesbourne station
on the same system, and 5 south-east from Canterbury, in the Canter»
bury division of the county, lathe of St. Augustine, hundred of
Bridge and Petham, petty sessional division of St. Augustine’s.
Canterbury, county court district of Canterbury, rural deanery of
East Bridge and archdeaconry and diocese of Canterbury. Gas and
electricity are available. \Vater is supplied by the Margate Corporation.

The church of St-. Peter is of flint

. in the Blorman style, with some

additions of the Early English period, and lias a tower with spire, con»
raining a L'l()t'.l{ and 4 bells : the windows are stained : within a recess is a
rccninbent elligy of a man in robcs, in low relief : the church was repaired
and partly rebuilt about 1860, and affords 350 sittings. The register dates
from the year 1565. The living is a Vicarage, annexed to the Vicarage
of Patrixbourne, joint net yearly value £356, with 55 acres of glebe
and residence, in the gift of the Marquess Conyngham, and held since

1897 by the Rev. Hubert Knight M.

who resides at Patri.\'hournc. In 1920 a cross was erected in the nortl1-
cast of the churcliy.'ir<l in memory of 15 men of the parish who fell in
the Great War, 1914-18. The -.VIct.hoilist church. built in 1894, is of
corrugated iron ‘and wood, and seats 150 persons. The principal land—
owners are the Marquess Conyngham. who is lord of the manor, and
Earl Sondes. The soil is chalky; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are
wheat, barley, oats and hops; the area is 1,171 acres; the population

in 1921 was 699, and in 1951, 713.
