CHARTHAM is a parish and vil- lage, near the road from Canter- bury to Ashford, on the river Stour, with a railway station I51; miles south-west from Canterbury, 11 north-east from Ashford, 65 miles from London by rail and 56 by road, in the Canterbury divi- sion of the county, lathes of St. Augustine and Scray, hundreds of Felborough and VVestgate, rural district of Bridge-Blean and arch- deaconry and diocese of Canter- bury. Gas and electricity are available. The church of St. Mary is of flint, stone and brick, chiefly in the Early Decorated style, and has a tower of perpendicular date, containing a clock and 6 bells : the chancel windows retain much of the original stained glass, and there are numerous hrasses, in- cluding one to Sir Robert de Septvans, 1506: in 1921 a brass mural tablet was put up hearing the names of the men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18; there are 300 sittings. The regis- ter dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Horton annexed, with residence and 30 acres of globe, in the gift of the Archbishop of Can- terbury, and held since 1943 by the Rev. Andrew Rollo Gore Browne. The Old Tithe Barn was converted into a parish hall by the Rev. F. J. Hazledine (rector 1912- 1920). On the village green is a cross, erected in 1920 as a memorial to the men connected with the parish who fell in the Great VVar, 1914-18. There are three Metho- dist churches and a Salvation Army hall. A cemetery of 2 acres was laid out in 1899 and a Burial Board of 11 members formed. There is a. paper factory. On Chartham Downs were formerly a considerable number of barrows, now ploughed up, in which at various times have been found human remains, pottery and trin- kets, mostly of the Anglo-Saxon period,and on the Swarling Downs are three lines of entrenchments. The St. Augustine’s Hospital was erected in 1875 on Chartham Downs and covers with its grounds an area of 300 acres; the buildings will hold 658 men and 624 women. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The soil is light loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and hops. The area is 4,570 acres of land and water; the popu- lation in 1951 was 3,355. Shalinslord Street is a consider- able hamlet, adjoining Chartham; Chartham Hatch (or Hatch Green), 1 mile north, is also a hamlet. HORTON, half a mile north- east, contains 399 acres, and is a chapelry, or hamlet, with 14 houses; Denstead is 2 miles north, in Blean Forest.
