The cl1111‘Ch of St. Peter is a modern building in the Gothic style, with some remains of the original Norman church, and has a tower with spire, containing a clock and 5 bells: the windows are stained: within a recess is a recumbent efiigy of a man in robes, in full relief: the church was repaired and partly rebuilt about 1860_ and affords 350 sit- tings. The register dates from the year 1565. The living is a Vicarage, annexed to the vicarzige of Patrixbourne, with residence,in the gift of the Archbishop of Can- , terhury, and has been held since 1952 by the Rev. Geoffrey Arth. CHARTHAM is a parish and vil- lage, near the road from Canter- bury to Ashford, on the river Stour, with a railway station SJ, miles south-west from Canterbury, 11 north-east from Ashford, 65 miles from London by rail and 56 by road, in the Canterbury divi- sion of the county, lathes of St. Augustine and Scray, hundreds of Felborough and Westgate, rural district of Bridge—l3lean and arch- deaconry and diocese of Canter- bury. The church of St. Mary is of flint. stone an(l brick, chiefly in the Earl Decorated style, and has a tower of perpendicular date, containing a clock and 6 bells : the chancel windows retain much of the original stained glass, and there are numerous brasses, in- cluding one to Sir Robert de' Septvans, 1506 : in 1921 a brass mural tablet was put up bearing the names of the men of the parish who fell in the Great VVar 1914-18. A sanctuary lamp was installed in 1950. In 1951 was added an oak caise containing a book of remem- brance inscribed with the names of those who fell in th-e second Great War 1939-45 : there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Horton annexed, with residence and 15 acres of globe, in the gift of the Arch- bishop of Canterbury, and has been held since 1943 by the Rev. Andrew Rollo Gore Browne. There is a Methodist Chapel in Shalmsford street. The Old Tithe Barn was converted into a parisli hall by the Rev. F. J. lla7.ledine (rector 1912-1920). On the village green is a cross, erected in 1920 as a memorial to the men connected with the parish who fell in the Great. VVar, 1914-18. The names of those who fell in the second world war" have been added. There are three Metho- dist churches and a Salvation Army hall. A cemetery of 2 acres was laid out in 1899 and a Burial Board of 11 members formed. There is a paper factory. ‘On Chartham Downs were formerly 3- considerable number of barrows, now ploughed up, in which at various times have been found human remains, pottery and trin- kets, mostly of the Anglo-Saxon period,and on the Swarhng DOWIIB are three lines of entrenchments. The St. Augustine’s Hospital was "‘ erected in 1875 on Charthsm Downs and covers with its gr_oun.dl‘ an area. of ‘.300 acres; the buildings will hold 851 men and 882 women. The new admission hospital (Oak House) which was first completed in L959, has been in use since July, 1951, and provides for 42 men and 42 women. The area is 4,570 acres of land and water; the population in 1951 was 5,892 Shalmsford Street is a consider- able hamlet, adjoining Chartham; Chartham Hatch (or Hatch Green), 1 mile north, is also a hamlet. HORTON, half a mile north- _ east, contains 399 acres, and is a chapelry, or hamlet, with 14 houses; Denstead is 2 miles north, in Blean Forest, where also is Petty France; Howfield adjoins Milton; Nickle is 1 mile north- west; Mystole, a mile and a half south-west; Underdown, 1 mile south; Tliruxted, 1 mile south.
