Stuart Gooda, an enthusiast, will outline the development of the RAF and the Luftwaffe followed by an illustrated talk on the equipment and personalities waging war in the skies above our county. He will conclude with an assessment of the effect and outcome of the battle on the course of the war. Originally an operational tighter base, and later a diversionary airfield during the battle, Manston houses the Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum. The visit will be followed by a cream tea at the Museum. Members without their own transport are welcome to come, arrangements will be made for them to occupy spare seats. Members £3.50 Non~members £4 R R Tuesday November 2000 JANE AUST EN IN KENT This celebrated author from Hampshire had many associations with Kent, often visiting her brother, Edward Knight at the great house in Godmersham Park and staying also with friends at the big house at Goodnestone. She included many of the personalities and places in this area in her books. We will gather at the Village hall to view the photos for the Quiz and enjoy a welcome drink and mince pies. We then cross the road to the White Horse Inn, open exclusively to Society members, for the traditional Christmas buffet, during which the general knowledge quiz will take place. He will trace its origins as an iron Age hill—Foi't through to the Romans and the building of the lighthouse. After the Norman Conquest it was extensively fortified with the centrepiece of the keep being erected in the reign of Henry II. It has been continuously occupied by the military and was extensively used in two world wars with its secret wartime tunnels. The castle has two exhibitions using light, film and sound to recreate the siege of l2 l6 and the arrival of King Henry VIII. S CHURCHES Thomas lngoldsby said that “The World, according to the best geographers, is divided into Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Romney Marsh”. In his talk, Dick Bolton will explore the changes made by man and nature to form today’s magical landscape.
