ARCHIVE & ERESEARCH PROJECT The Society would like to hear from members who would be interested in helping to compile an oral history of life in Bridge. This would involve recording interviews with residents both young and old which would be transcribed into a booklet. County—wide Aspects are served through the Society’s membership of the Kent History Federation. The evening meetings are informal and sociable. Transport and or escorts can usually be arranged with other members living nearby. On trips by members cars, those without transport can usually be accommodated in the spare seats. Please contact the organiser of each event for arrangements. Please contact any Society officer or committee member if you need any help. Membership is annual commencing in September. Rates are £6.00 single, £10.00 double and £4.00 for each additional person residing at the same address. The performance will be inside the church and there is a special night for Bridge & District History Society members on Thursday 23rd September. TUESDAYT9 _ No one who lives close to Canterbury can be unaware of the major archaeological investigations that have taken place over the past few years prior to redevelopment work in the city. Many interesting and significant discoveries and finds were made and we are fortunate in having Paul Bennett, the Director of the Canterbury Archaeological Trust, to talk to us about them. 7.30pm The School Hall Bridge Members £2. 00 nan—members £3.00 including refreshments. Our annual Christmas get-together will be at the White Horse Inn Bridge. The entertainment will include a Photo Quiz which will be themed on historic photos of the area and a concert by a local group ‘Quodlibet’ whose repertoire includes madrigals, glees, catches, part songs folk songs and humorous items. MEMBERS SOCIAL EVENING. A chance for members to socialise in an informal atmosphere in the Plough & Harrow. Chris Maclean will give a short illustrated talk on the events that have been celebrated over the years in this public house covering among other things the fire service and the return of the soldiers from the First World War. There will be a buffet afterwards. 7.30pm Upstairs room, Plough & Harrow Restricted to members only £5.00 including buffet. jb An entertaining and informative talk by Dick Bolton around the subject of bricks which will take in Kentish architecture and it’s materials as well the building techniques of brick buildings of Canterbury and district. Dick Bolton has spoken to us many times before and always keeps us well entertained. 7.30pm The School Hall, Bridge Members £2.00 non-members £3.00 including refreshments. jv A coach visit on St. George’s Day to the battlefields and museums of Agincourt and Crecy followed by a visit to the walled town of Montreuil, the setting for Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables and the headquarters for General Haig during the First World War. The abbey church contains the shields of those who fought at Agincourt. 7.30 am Bridge Post Oflice. Members £20. 00 non—members £25.00 jb The Kent History Federation Conference will take place at Edenbridge this year and will follow the usual format of talk on topics of interest in the morning followed by visits to the local area in the afternoon. As last year we are including a slip on the booking form for those who would like information on this event.
