Mr. Armstrong was the eldest son of the late Mr. Thomas Armstrong, of Fallowfield, Manchester, and wasboruin 1832. He wasapupil ofAry Schefler, and in 1853 went to study art in Paris. where Du ,Ma.urier, Whistler, and Sir Edward Poynter were among his associates. He lived in Algiers in 1858 and 1859, and in the following year worked with Du Maurier at Dfiseldorf. He exhibited in the Royal Academy from 1885 to 1877, and for the four following years at the Grosvenor Gallery. In 1881 he was appointed Director for Art in the Department of! Mr. Walter Murray Guthrie died yaterday at his residence, Duart Castle, Isle of Mull, after a long illness. He was born in 1869, and was a. son of the late Mr. J. A. Guthrie. of Craigie (a director. and at one time Governor, of the Bank of England), by his mar- riage with Ellinor, daughter of Admiral Sir Jama Stirling. He was educated at Eton and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. From. 1899 to 1806 he sat in the House of Commons as Conservative member for the‘ Bow and Bromley Division or the Tower Hamlets, retiring at the General Election in the latter year. From 1903 to 1909, when, owing to ill-health, he resigned, he was Alderman of Cornhill Ward in the City of London. He served during part of the Boer War in theField Ambulance operations. He was a. partner in the firm of Masra.
