BRIDGE TRAFFIC DANGER Surely. Bridge was by-passed! Yes, correct—five years ago a by-pass costing M£3.5 took all the heavy TIR road traffic from Bridge, and people there at last began to live safe. quiet lives. Yet a ivlotel scheme being actively supported by the Canterbury City Council threatens to put the traffic back! The Motel itself is not the problem. it could benetit the area——but the traffic from it wanting to continue to London may have to go theough the village of Bridge. The County Ptoad Surveyor and his department say that the road scheme proposed is dangerous, and have blocked the application temporarily. They want the developers of the site to put in a bridge or find some way of getting that London-bound traffic safe/yon to the north-bound lane of the Canterbury by-pass. The by~pass is due to open in November. The Canterbury City Council is pressing the Kent County Planning Sut:»Committee to ignore the objection and pass the plan as originally submitted. The County Sub-Committee, which has the power to ignore their County Surveyor’s warning, meet on Tuesday, September 22nd to give a decision on the matter. We think they should heed the expert advice of the County Surveyor’s office and ensure that traffic and service lorries do not use Bridge to gain the London road. WHAT CAN YOU DO? I Come to the special public meeting in Bridge Village Hall this Wednesday, September 9th at 8pm, to support us. I Write to the County Council Pianning Sub-Committee and protest at the risk they put us in if they agree the basic application. The address is: The Chairman, Planning Sub-Committee, Kent County Council, County Hall, Maidstone, Kent. Your Member of Parliament, Mr. David Crouch, who had to attend an overseas conference at the end of last week, has issued a warning himself to the Planning Sub-Committee. He sees the danger and has acted l-ie actively supported the fourteen-year fight to clear out the heavy traffic from Bridge. Will you help us once again persuade the asthorities to keep this traffic out of Bridge! =,: sta: Cy M“ A. >-lowland, “White Gates“. Bekesbourne Lane, Patrixbourne. Canterbury.
