DOVER Hevergsert. Development Mears Construction has a long association with the development of the Harbour and since the late 1940's has been involved in the construction of the modern- isation of the Eastern Docks. This has included the construction of three roll-on/roll-off terminals which involved large blockwork sea walls, extensive sheet piling and land reclamation. Following this an adjacent part of the harbour was reclaimed to form the present Hoverport. More recently the vast increase in Continental bound traffic resulted in Mears winning a £4.7M contract for a new international hoverport at the Western end of the port. This is required to accommodate an enlarged hovercraft to be introduced on cross channel services by British Hail Hovercraft Ltd., and by the French Railways, with a new SEDAM N500 hovercraft. We contract provides for the reclamation of 15 acres \./I land including the formation of a concrete ramp and hoverpad. The reclamation will be constructed with a new solid section of pier to replace the existing iron- work part of the Prince of Wales Pier, the extension of the North Pier in the inner harbour and the perimeter toe wall. Mears have also been responsible for the building of a new and more extensive Customs and Control buildings which they built in record time under very difficult conditions. A roll-on/roll-off terminal has been com- pleted in the Western docks along with the Harbour's first ‘double decker' roll-on/roll-off terminal in the Camber area of the Eastern Docks.
