Object to the broader assault on South Canterbury green belt grade 1 farmland. The council is conniving to construct an extensive Park-and-ride on South Canterbury agricultural land (trees behind the Gate hotel already grubbed out in preparation), and the Canterbury College planning application presumes that the park-and-ride will be approved In your letters you should ask whether Land Securities plc have any interest in these developments, or in the re-development of the old college site. There is also a high probability (certainty?) that Christchurch college will seek a second campus in this vicinity (and they will be able to do it as easily as Canterbury college, since the same relaxed criteria, and supportive council “ofiicers” will allow them to steal the green belt from right under your noses). There will he traffic chaos in your streets. The college will provide 400 car parking spaces, but “stringent pricing policies” will discourage their use. The college will “actively seek olfsite car parking”. A 7000 student body will certainly want to park in your road! There will be 9am to Spm trafiic, plus lunchtime, lecture-time, evening-time and weekend leisure-time tratfic movements for 7000 students and ancillary stall. Shuttle buses will supply the Nackington road from the city centre. The college site entrance will be opposite Chaucer hospital, and facilities for traffic tuming will be “outside the college site”. How do you think this will affect hospital traffic, current commuter trafiic, and school traffic (vehicular, pedestrian and schoolchild cyclists)? On the Dover Road side, use of the South Canterbury Park-and-Ride will be encouraged. This will not reduce traffic in your area, it will increase it. (Drive along Sturry Rd. or Wincheap Rd. and ask yourself if Park-and-Ride has reduced traffic densities). Students who used to walk to their college from the town centre will now be bussed out (or will drive out) to the new Park-and-Ride, or will park in your street at all hours of the day and night, seven days a week. Game Over. If you do nothing now, South Canterbury will be in-filled with student campuses and the sort of warehouse architecture that springs up around Park-and-Rides (see Sturry and Wincheap as examples). There will be a complete loss of green belt amenity in between Canterbury and Bridge. The map below paints a better picture than words ever can. Canterbury College Christchurch Collegg Expanded Park-and-Ride College egansion or housing Park-and-Ride Phase I Public Meetings The council typically gives short notice of crucial public meetings, and the college clearly is selective in who it wants to hear from. We will try to keep you informed of meetings as they arise. Please try to be present wherever possible to make your voice heard.
