CANTERBURY COUNTRYSIDE ACTION GROUP November 1997 Newsletter 1 Canterbury Countryside Action Group is a newly-formed group of local people who oppose the development of our countryside for the purpose of Park & Ride, college expansion, retail and housing development. Such developments only help increase our dependency on the motor-car which is not a sustainable form of transport. We feel it is vital that our fast-dwindling countryside is preserved for future generations. OUT OF TOWN IS OUT OF ORDER. 0 Our first fight is to stop the Canterbury South Park & Ride which is planned to be built on prime farm land south of The Gate Inn (top of New Dover Road) adjacent to the A2050. This proposed scheme would cater for 600 vehicles plus a large area designated for caravans or is it coaches? 0 Intrinsically linked to this proposal is the plan to build a new campus for Canterbury College on grade one agricultural land between Chestnut Cottage and Winter’s Farm and fronting Nackington Road. Access to this college for 14,500 students would be via an internal road across more prime farmland linking up with the proposed Park & Ride. If these schemes are permitted traffic and pollution levels would undoubtedly increase dramatically. 0 Welcome to The Garden of Kent and Welcome to Urban Sprawl and Pollution. 0 Unless we all act now our countryside will be destroyed. 0 We can save our countryside if we all fight together. Show your opposition by acting now. Please write to your city councillors and members of the Environment Committee NOW voicing your concerns: Canterbury City Council, Military Road, Canterbury CT1 IYW and please come to a SPECIAL Environment Committee Meeting on Thursday 27th November at 7.30 pm at the Guildhall when the proposed Park & Ride will be decided upon (Tel Canterbury City Council 763763, Lyn McDade Ext 4405 for details).
