The Byron Society was founded in Britain in 1876, at the instigation of King George I of Greece, to “preserve the memory of the cause for which he lived and died in the hearts of his countrymen”. After many successes, it ceased activities at the outbreak of war in 1939 The present organization was formed in 1971 to revive this work. It is an international organization, with National Committees in most European countries, United States, Canada, the Middle and Far East. The Byron Journal, a scholarly publication, is issued annually on January 22 The objectives ot The Byron Society are to educate the public in and to promote research into the life and work of Lord Byron (a) By discussions, lectures and readings lrom Byron’s works, with particular reference to the history and literature of the countries with which he was associated, and by international seminars. (b) By arranging visits to countries and places about which Byron wrote or in which he stayed.
