These libraries usually contain some books for loan on the history and topography of the County of Kent, together with items on the more immediate area. If you wish to undertake a more detailed study of your locality it is advisable to visit one of the larger libraries in your area. The Local Studies Collections in these libraries generally consist of books and pamphlets, maps, photographs, files of local newspapers and material on micro- film, particularly census returns. The collections are often unique, having been built up over many years and usually items are only available for consultation in the library. Librarians are able to advise you on the type of material available locally, general books on how j to study local history, societies you may wish to join and where to obtain further help.
