FRIENDS OF HALES PLACE CHAPEL The little early Victorian chapel, the last visible monument to the Hales family, is a grade II listed building. ln 1974 the Roman Catholic Parish Council of Canterbury formed a committee to raise money for the restoration of this slowly delapidating building. There were many many generous donations but insufficient to cover the cost of good restoration work. In April 1984 the chapel was taken over from the Catholic Diocese of Southwark by the Canterbury City Council and, under the direction of the architect, Anthony Swaine, the fabric has been completely restored. To supplement the Council's overall restoration work we have established a small group to maintain continued interest in the chapel, to encourage respect for the property as a resting place of the dead and to ensure interdenominational worship is offered from time to time in the chapel. Your help is essential to maintain a fund for the internal decorating of the chapel, occasional tidying of the property and seasonal work. Your support is also needed with your involve- ment and interest — whether you are a member of the local community, an historian or genealogist or have any association with Canterbury and the Hales. Any capacity in which you are willing to help will be most appreciated. As a Friend of Hales Place Chapel and a promise of £3.50 a year you will receive the regular newsletter and any occasional literature we produce. Committee: David S.
