Hasted (1732-1812) spent forty years on his history of Kent. Published in two editions between I778 and 1801, it received mixed responses and for some years afters his death Hasted’s reputation as a historian fluctuated before opinion evolved into the present more favoured assessment. He was preminently a copier and arranger of other peoples work, he selected family seats and estates for attention in an arbituary way, howver his work has two great virtues. First, it embodies in some form or other all the materials that Hasted was able to discover in 40 long years of persistent searching and copying, and secondly it is extremely well indexed. It therdore gives a very detailed, if one- sided, impression of the county of Kent and its historical records. 50. Headlam, Cecil. THE STORY OF OXFORD. Illustrated by Herbert Railton. 1931.
