Barbecue helps ’I‘he "breathless hush" at The Close old people's hospital, Bridge, was broken on Saturn day evening. Flags and bunting, fairy lights, pop music and the sound of sizzling sausages combined to bring an air of gaiety to the former Victorian "Union." Members of the Bridge branch of the League of Friends of Canterbury Hospitals combined with the Superintendent and Matron, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Urwin, and the staff, to organise a barbecue and fete. The sausage and chop supper. with the colourful stalls and sideshows, attracted many vil- lagers to the hospital and about £300 was raised for branch funds. The branch president. Cllr. Dr. R. A. C. McIntosh, wel- comed the chairman of Bridge- Blean Rural District Council, Cllr. Brian Raffety, and Mrs. Raffety, as well as Mr. T. A. Clarke, chairman of the League, who declared the barbecue open. Last year Mr. Clarke said rthat the Bridge branch gave about £400 a year to help The Close and central committee funds and, altogether, some £6,000 had been spent on Canterbury hospitals "by the League last year. He was thanked by the Rector, Canon Clive Perry, chairman of the Bridge branch. Canon Perry also thanked the Superintendent and the Matron for the "devotion and love" they gave to the hospital and the patients. For sale Among the many stalls was one which offered for sale shell- work, lampshades and stools made by hospital patients. Stallholders included: Barbe- cue, Mr. and Mrs. Dove and kitchen staff; jackpot, Mr. and er played the organ. Mrs_ Milton; fancy goods and jumble, Sister Bryant and staff; tombola, Sister Shorter and staff; cakes, Mrs. Pratt and Miss Wraight; shilling parcels, Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Masters. Kitchenware, Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs, Jones; peg board, Mr. Pomroy; wheel of fortune, Mrs. F. Pay and Mr. Decent; bowl- ing, Mr. Morgan; coffee, Mrs. Decent; soft drinks, Mrs. Mor- gan.
