' Obituary: Douglas Cartwright, well known local character, died last — Friday after a long illness. Born in 1919 in the village Where The Last of the Summer Wine was filmed, he joined the Territorial Army in 1938, later serving in The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment and later transferred to the Royal Artillery. He fought in Burma and after being demohbed joined the Civil Service as a Customs Officer, Working in the Pool of London. . On promotion he moved to Canterbury, where he started up an office in Whitstable Harbour, then on to Folkestone, ending his service in Dover. On his retirement he moved to Bridge and became a playground attendant at Bridge School. Taking up voluntary work such as letting secretary for the village hall, he also helped with the reforming of the Royal British Legion branch in Bridge, served on the committee‘ on the RNLI, and on the committee for the Protection of Rural’England. In the last few years, with his wife Ethel, he started day trips from the village to various places of interest. These will continue in his memory. His many friends send condolences to his widow. The funeral service will be at Bridge Church at 2.15pm on Wednesday, June 11, followed by private cremation at Barharn and later the scattering of ashes by the Dover Lifeboat. Fete Success: The village fete last Saturday in the Primary School grounds was a particularly outstanding success. Not only did the excellent weather combined with the great variety of stalls and events, draw record crowds but , also the variety of food and refreshment available, plus the - many activities continuously taking place, made it a great day out for all the family. Another bonus was the dry weather which made for easy parking on the recreation ground.
