In 1992 the Schools Sub~Committee considered the question of police checks for governors, but decided not to proceed with formal checks. They did, however, agree to some fornt of self—declaration regarding criminal convictions, bankruptcy and the number of governorships held. All Local Education Authority Governors have to sign the following declaration: "I confirm that I have no criminal convictions and have not been involved in bankruptcy proceedings that would render me liable for disqualification as a governor under the terms of the Education (School Government) Regulations 1989 and the Amendment Regulations 1991 and 1993. I also declare that I serve on no more than two governing bodies of schools maintained by a Local Authority as set out in the Regulations. * Please note that the criminal convictions prescribed by Regulation 7 of the 1989 Regulations as disqualifying a person from.holding the office of governor include some convictions that would otherwise be regarded as spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. By virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exemptions) Order 1975 all convictions must be disclosed. If you would like further guidance please contact the Area Education Office." I would like to recommend the adoption of this procedure to you. If you have any queries about this procedure, please contact Jackie Santer on ext 2261. Yours faithfully Richard Spoerry Schools Service Manager J SDHPARI 6773/ M 13 May 1996 Dear Mrs. Andrews, I write with reference to your letter of 15 February, concerning the nomination of 23 Governor to represent the Minor Authorities. When Bekesbourne with Patrixbourne Parish Council discussed at its last meeting the question of appointing a Governor, they indicated that they would be happy for Mrs McKeever to carry on if she was willing to do so. l was asked to ascertain Mrs McKeever’s feelings, and have now had a very positive reply (a copy of which I enclose). Although the matter has yet to be finalised at the next Parish Council meeting to be held on 13 May, l think you can take it that this Parish Council would very likely support Bridge Parish Council over the re—appointment of Mrs McKeever. I am writing to you now in the hope that you may be able to help to resolve the difficulties which I understand have arisen about the continuation of the appointment of Mrs. A. HcKeever as Chairman of the Governors of Bridge School. I gather that reservations have expressed about Hrs. HcKeever's eligibility as Chairman, given her residence outside Bridge. However, I would like to say that given the particular circumstances at the school in the coming year (that is, Hrs. Newton's temporary absence) it would seem helpful if there could be a continuity in terms of the post of Chairman of the Governors. Obviously everyone at the school has every confidence in the continuation of its high standards whilst Hrs. Newton is away, but there seems to be no case for the possible disruption that a new appointment could make. Hrs. HcKeever's long association with the school and her experience in financial management suggest that at this point she could make a very significant contribution both to the continued excellence of Bridge School and to support for Mrs. Vye and Mrs. Newton. I think that all parents at the school are anxious to facilitate a happy and successful year for Mrs. Vye. The maintenance of existing, and proven, expertise would obviously go a long way in contributing towards this. Yours sincerely, M//1/MEWI/MS cc: Mrs A. Newton Mrs J. Vye Yew Tree Farmhouse, Stelling Minnis, Canterbury, CT4 6BB Mrs M. Church, 72a New House Lane, Thanington Without, Canterbury. CT4 7BJ 1st April 1996. Dear Mrs Church, I understand that the Bridge Parish Council will shortly be taking a decision on the position of some of the governors of Bridge and Patrixbourne School. I would like to write in support for Mrs McKeever, who I understand will be standing for re-election to the board of governors of the school. Although Mrs McKeeVer lives in F aversham now, she remains totally dedicated to the work of Bridge and Patrixbourne School and to the community it serves. She farms in the Bridge area so she has strong business links, besides the facts that her daughter lives in Bridge and her grand-daughter attends the school. Mrs McKeever is a valued member of the board of governors — from my own dealings with her and having spoken to others, I know that she works quietly and efiiciently for the school, giving sound advice and support to the other governors and to the teaching staff. She has a good grasp of the financial implications of running a school, essential in today's environment. I do hope that you will be able to convey to the Parish Council, my support for Mrs McKeever's re-election and that she will have the opportunity to continue her hard work for our school. Yours sincerely, St/xcllwfltw‘ Mrs S.R.J.Thompson. Chairman of the P.F.A., Bridge and Patrixbourne School.
