I have to inform you that the Commission have decided that an informal meeting should be held to hear local views on the proposed arrangements. At the request of the Commission the Home Secretary has appointed Mr J Whatley as an Assistant Commissioner to hold a meeting in the locality and report to the Commission. Arrangements have been made for the meeting to be held at the office of the City Secretary, 41 Old Dover Road, Canterbury on Wednesday 22 October at 10.30 am. This meeting is being held under the consultative powers available to the Commission under section 60 of the Local Government Act 1972 and it is not intended that the meeting should be a formal local inquiry. The Assistant Commissioner will not be assisted by Counsel and participants should not feel that unless they are professionally represented they will necessarily be at a disadvantage or their contributions not effectively made . The Council are asked to give publicity to the meeting by displaying notices in the form annexed to this letter as soon as possible at places where public notices are customarily displayedg and by the publication of the notice for two successive weeks in local newspapers. A cutting of each insertion should be sent to the Commission with a note of the name of the newspapers in which the notices appeared. The Commission will reimburse the cost of publishing these notices on receipt of your Council‘s invoice. Copies of the representations received in response to the draft enclosed for your Council's information. 3315 are Copies of this letter (without enclosures) are being sent to the bodies who received copies of the Commission's draft proposals and to those who ma comments. Any person interested in attending the meeting is invited to do so. Dear Ernie, Initial review of electoral arrangements for Districts. I thank you for your letter of the 13th instant re above and comment as follows. Bekesbourne should remain part of the new N. Nailbourne ward as it is in the existing Blidge ward. Geographically Bekesbourne is better suited to be with Bridge than Upper Hardres which is away at the top of the hill and has little contact with this village. People from Bekesbourne use Bridge as a natural centre and the children come to school here etCo9 on a bus route, docter, shopping and so on, with Upper Hardres this is not the case. No mention is made of Lower Hardres, this Parish could go either way. Yours sincerly, » - iv. fag“ fl fit‘ ,~; {I 3‘! L‘?~»~‘t«+'~3 Is’ :1- ,; :“3“"3!' ¢=*-«:3?
