In wrriting the story of the old roads in East Kent, one
is not only impressed by the magnitude of the task, but also
by the visions that are conjured up during the process of
the survey, for, comp-[Lred with those in other parts of the
country, the ‘East Kent roads, both as to age and lxistoric.a.l
€LSSOClzLtlO11S, out-do all others in iniportzuice, for there, and
there only, are we carried back to the very dawn of history;
in fact, so fan.‘ do they take us, that in some i.nstn.nces we
:are dependent on tradition and the spade for much of our
i].1fO1‘ll12l.t~lO11, which inay, perhaps, explain why most of
our modern writers luive only touched lightly on thie
 nbj eet ..

The East Kent roads have one distinctive chm':1cteri'stie
over those in other parts of the country, that they consist
of the oldest Britisli (I’ilgrin:\ VV2Lys), Ronmn and Saxon.
roads to be found in Eiiglzmd. Other counties, of course,
have this co111l)i:na.tion, but their Roman and Saxon ones
are not of an age to coinpare with those in East Kent; for
in most instzinces the conquest of this country began in the
vicinity of the VVantsn1n Chzmnel, so their road-xnaking
would begin zmd radiate from that district. This, most
probably, applies also to the British roads (l’ilg‘rim ‘.Va,ys)
which are to be found scattered all over East Kent; for if
these latter were, as is supposed, first laid down by the early
Belgic in'viLders*, who, Ci1.‘.S:11‘ relates, iuhal)ited this part of
the country from the sea coast long‘ before this time, then
they must be of great zmtiquity. In fact, the whole country
eolnprehends that part of England which, from its proximity
to the continent, first obtained distinct historical not-ice,
