Barry, Wm. Scot, and others. There are three seals, two being devices, and the third, on a shield a bend cotized in- dented, with the legend “ Sigillum Rob. . . . . .” In Add. MS. 5481 is an earlier Deed of Surrenden, dated 1378, with the same arms. The following pedigree from the De Banco Rolls, 2-1 Hen. VI., kindly furnished by Mr. Greenstreet, gives other members of the family :— Simon Soryndcn. Alice “ one daughter.” ___..____.___, ._,.__-,._.w___.|, l Joan "‘ one dau."T. . . Elys. I now proceed to notice the knightly families of SELLING and SIIELVING, and to consider their armorial bearings. Four coats are attributed to these names, Viz. :-— 1. Sir John de Shelving, who, according‘ to a Kentish Roll in the handwriting of Pliilipot, Somerset Herald, bore Azure, a fess ermine, in chief 3 einque- foils or. Mr. Greenstreet thinks the less here came from Waleys. 2. In Pluokley Church, in the east window of the south chancel, is an impaled coat: the dexter Ar:k_-;ent, on a cross azure 5 annulets or, which, l’hilipot says (Church Notes, Harl. "MS. 3917), is for “ Selliner oi’ Shurland;” the sinister being Billety, a fo§1"lill11. S(‘§;'i’(}f1l1t- argent. In Add. MS. 5418]. is a deed, dated 37 lfldw. (iedding might easily have been misread for an un(leeipher- able note of Slielving. llcsides, as the family of Towne was connected Willi that of Shelving, relationship would indicate the lalter name to be the one intended. The Slielving eoat——— l’er pale azure and verlt, a lion rampant ermine———is quartered by (‘t1l1)(-per al’ler Jlawte, who inarried the da11gl)te1' and lieiress. Tliis coatni:1y in some \\a_v have been got froln Cawiie (uzl/(2 Arelz. (/ma/., I V., 223, and V., 321). SHELVING. 29 vynk, is Azure, a chevron engrailed between 3 martlets argn, as quartered by Watton (Are/L. Coma, IV., 258). The order of the marshalled coats with which this is connected is———3 Towne, 4« Detling, 5 Shelvynk, 6 Dene, 7 Gatton. The following pedigree, founded on Inquisitions, etc., given in Top. and Gen, iii., 202, will show how this coat is brought in :— John de Shelving, of Shelving, lin VVoo:lne.liei1-esses, who man-iwl Somles, ;u1(1VVo1-mes;i1I,* VVal.ton, and Lewknor. Somles quar- ters the same cu-at as Watton for | Shelving. /l\ * In 15 Edw. Ill. there was a fine levied between Thomas do Done and l\Ia1-tha his wife, quer., and Benedii.-ta do Shelving, del'ore., of the manors of Boeton-l\Ialherbe, '\V'o1-inesall, and Throwley. If Thomas die without heirs, to remain to James Shelving. 13 Edw. Ill. there was a line between John de Cosehalc and Elizabeth his wife, qumn, and l3«*m-divla quc Twit uxor [widow] of John (le Shelving. one of the def'or(-iants, of the manor of (')i()l(lSl‘D.11l'()1‘l. By the l3oolc_ of Aid, 20 Edw.
