PARISH COUNCIL OF BRIDGE Q — .. _1 .____. __._- _ Bridge Village Hall 10 Conyngham Lane, Bridge. November, 1982. T: all residents of Bridge I wrote to you earlier this year about the Council's s rirst of all to BUY and then IMPROVE the Village Hall. llowing this, I received a number of very generous 3* rs rrom individuals and also village organisations nd, a result, last week (after protracted negotiations) a were able to sign the contract for the purchase of the Hall so now Bridge Village Hall belongs to Bridgei Now we can turn our attention to the much needed IMPROVEMENTS. Cllr. Gulvin has drawn up plans (shown overlea and these will cost approximately £28,000. This may sound daunting but we are applying for grants from Canterbury City Council and Kent County Council and hope to get substantial help from them. Nevertheless we still have to help Ourselves and a small committee has been formed to raise money for the project by holding fund raising events, starting with Carol Singing on 14th, 15th and 16th December (see Parish Notice Board for details) - come and join us! I would like to ask YOU to help and you can do this in a number of ways - we would welcome DONATIONS in any amount either once and for all or even better an amount per year covenanted for 4 years so that we can recover the income tax, or LOANS in multiples of £20. These would be interest-free and repayable at the latest by 30.4.88. A fifth of the loans would be repayable each year to be decided by ballot at the Parish Annual Meeting. These may be from individuals and also we hope from other village clubs and societies. Please don't delay — complete and return the form below NOW to me. As I said in my previous letter this is a tremendous opportunity for the village. Everybody will benefit from the hall at some time and I am sure you will want to help. Parish Council chair- man, Cllr John Hill, said ‘the village hall committee preferred to extend the current hall rather than build a new one, and the Marquis ‘had agreed to sell the. hall to the village. The hall was built before 1867 and was used as a reading room. Villagers were taught to read there by one of the Conyngham family before the 1870 Education Act was pas- sed. Old ink wells were = found during the exten- sion construction and it is hoped to display these inside. Cllr Hill thanks donors, especially Dr Roger Hunter who has lived in the village for over 40 years and paid half the purchase price of the hall. The com- mittee room will be named the Hunter 0 Room. He also thanked architects Cllr Mervyn Gnlvin and his partner Mr David. Marsh, buil- ders Chapman and Humphreys and Mrs Mary Porridge from Kent Voluntary Ser- vices Council, which advised the village hall committee and helped obtain grants from the C‘ilty and County Coun- c s.
