The list includes a wide range of structures from cathedrals down to factories, houses, tombstones and telephone boxes. Buildings on the list are known as ‘listed buildings’. They are given grades (grade I, grade ll* or grade II) which reflect their relative importance. Grade I buildings are those which are of ‘exceptional interest’, although less than 2% of listed buildings are given this grade. Archaeoloqical information (Monument report) The NMR is the first point of contact for many people seeking archaeological information. It is used by a wide range of people, from GSCE to PhD students, local study groups to commercial archaeological organisations and environmental consultants. Finding out the type and location of sites in the area is the first stage for many interested in the historic environment. Knowing what is there not only adds to the _ enjoyment and appreciation of the English landscape, but also plays an important part in ensuring that any future development takes these fragile remains into consideration. Each report will give you a six figure grid reference, a textual summary of the site, and full bibliography. It will also tell you if the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME) carried out any survey work and if the results of that survey are in our archive. - The report you have received will give you the basic information you need to start building up an archaeological map of your area of interest. You can find out more about the sites included in the report by following up the bibliographic references. If you have any queries about the Monument report you have received please contact the Archaeology Team 01793 414600. The tower is placed centrally in the south aisle forming a ‘porch of honour’, a distinctly Norman feature. The east end of the South aisle, the Bifrons Chapel, was rebuilt in the 15th century. The north aisle was added in 1824. The chancel was drastically restored in 1849 by Mr Marshall of Canterbury; the nave, tower and south aisle in 1857 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. An alien priory cell of Austin canons was founded here circa 1200 when the church and manor was granted to the Priory of Beaulieu, Normandy. In 1258, it was granted to Merton Priory. Tne estate was sold to Merton, and the priory dissolved, in 1409. There is strong evidence that Patrixbourne was a minster created in a second wave of rninster creation in Kent from the 8th to mid— 10th centuries. Status . Rare and good east wheel window with cylindrical spokes. The chancel, the nave, the tower and the south aisle to the west of the tower are late C12 (the spire C13) and contain an especially fine Norman south doorway and a good Norman priests’ doorway. But they were rather drastically restored at the expense of the first Marchioness Conyngham, the chancel in 1849 (architect Mr Marshall of Canterbury) the nave, tower and aisle in 1857 (architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott). The east end of the south aisle (the Bifrons Chapel) was rebuilt in the C15. The north aisle was added in 1824. Some of the windows have C16 and C17 Swiss glass given to the church by Lady Conyngham in 1837. Body stones in the churchyard. (5) Additional bibliography. A circular feature may be a ring ditch of Bronze Age date, though it may equally represent a garden feature. Status Other Identifiers Notes A number of cropmark features are visible in the vicinity of the former site of Bifrons House on air photographs taken July 16th 2001. They include a series of rectilinear enclosures sharing the same broad alignment as the house, the largest being up to 90 metres across. A circular feature at TR 18755505, circa 20 metres in diameter resembles a Bronze Age ring ditch. However, it is centrally located along the southern (external) side of the largest rectilinear enclosure, and a tree-lined avenue to the north of the house also appears to be aligned on it. What appears to be a tree enclosure ring is visible in this approximate location on the 1877 Ordnance Survey 25 inch map. A painting of c1705 to 1710, attributed to Jan Siberechts, shows the formal garden, the arrangement of walled enclosures agreeing well with the cropmarks, although nothing appears at the approximate location of the ring ditch/tree enclosure. The first, a ring ditch 45 feet in diameter, was devoid of any internal features. It was cut by a ditch of presumed IronAge date, suggested to belong to a field system. the second ring ditch, 60 feet in diameter, contained in its interior a rough arc of cremation deposits in pits, some contained in pottery vessels. Further cremations were found outside the ring ditch. Radiocarbon dates from the cremations suggest a later 2nd millennium BC date, as does the pottery, wholly Deverel—Rimbury type vessels. The excavation report implies that the ring ditch should be seen as contemporary with these burials, though this need not be the case and an earlier date cannot be ruled out. Status Other Identifiers Notes Two ring ditches plus other features were excavated in 1974 in advance of work to widen the A2 near Bridge. details as follows: Barrow 1 (TR 19295324) — ring ditch 45ft in diameter. No internal features. The barrow was cut by a narrow, straight ditch which terminated a little to the E, just short of a group of postholes. The straight ditch belonged to a field system of probable Iron Age date, and the postholes are assumed to be contemporary. Iron Age pottery occured in the fills of both. The interior of the barrow/ring ditch was devoid of features. The ring ditch is effectively undated, though presumably belongs somewhere in the Bronze Age. Barrow 2 (TR 19265331) — ring ditch 60ft in diameter. At one point the ditch fill contained a large deposit of burnt flints. Within the area contained by the ring ditch were a total of 10 cremation deposits arranged in an arc c6-7ft within the line of the ditch, suggesting that they may represent secondary interments. 5 cremations were in pots, the other 5 were in pits, though of course they may originally have been deposited in organic containers. All but one of the pots was inverted, and all fitted tightly into pits. A further group of 6 cremations was found outside the ring ditch, a short distance to the NE. All were badly plough damaged. Two C14 dates were obtained from cremations, one from each group, providing a mean date of 980 +/- 60 BC. Unfortunately, the original dates are not quoted in the excavation report. Calibrated, this mean date falls in the range 1320-970 BC (93.7% probability), ie the latter part of the Middle Bronze Age. The pottery associated with the cremations confirms a later 2nd millennium BC date, and conforms with the current pattern of later Bronze Age Deverel-Rimbury and post—Deverel Rimbury ceramics from East Kent. The excavation report appears to favour a similar date for the ring ditch itself, although as noted, the location and arrangement of the cremation deposits allows for the possibility that they are secondary, later than the cutting of the ring ditch itself.
