Conference will be held at Canterbury Christchurch
University (subject to confirmation)- a convenient
location for our members so please do attend.

Following on Steven Edney’s talk on the
Salutation Garden at Sandwich we have arranged
a dusk visit for 2 hours, hopefully on a balmy
summer’s evening,with a glass ol‘ eliampagne

Membership is annual connneneing in September.
Rates are: £8.00 single, £14.00 double and £6.00
for each additional person residing at the same

/\nnual General Meeting, to review last years programme and
to hear the Treasurer's report, this will also be an opportunity
for you to have a say in what you would like the Society to do

Bridge & District History Society was formed in I995 to
promote interest in aspects of local history in and around the
villages of Barham, Bekesbourne, liishopstaourne, Hriclge,
Kingston and Patrixbourne.

(‘ounty-wicle aspects are served through the Society's
membership of the Kent History Federation.

The evening meetings are informal and sociable and include
reli‘eslnnents. Transport and/or escorts can usually be arranged
with other members living nearby.

()n trips by members cars, those without transport ean usually
be accommodated in the spare seats. Please contact the
organiser of each event for arrangements. Please contact any

Sheila Sweetinburgh of Canterbury Christ Church
University will talk about Kent’s Cinque Ports in
the Middle Ages and of their unique status under
the law. This talk will be preceded by a short
Annual General Meeting.

The history and fabric of St. Peter’s Bridge
will be unveiled by /\lan Barber and others
in an audio visual anthology presentation. All
proceeds from this meeting will go to Church
restoration funds.

A talk on the effects of the Baedeker air raids on
Canterbury in 1942 by Paul Bennett, M.B.E.,
Director of Canterbury Archaeological Trust. Paul
is always an interesting speaker with a wealth of
knowledge of his subject.

In the days before the wonders of television the
Catch Club was an 18th - 19th century (l779—
1865) club in Canterbury for those interested in
music and singing. We will have an interesting
and unusual talk by Chris Price with audio
recordings of some of their music.

lighthouses and other navigational aids for shipping.
David Whitehead, an ambassador for 'l'rinity House
will enlighten us on its history and hopefully on its
connection with Bridge.
