Recent develop- ments in Church life throughout the world have faced the Church of England and its dioceses with a number of urgent matters which need effective action. One of the great problems Seems to be how to Promote and co—ordinate both within the parishes and dioceses:- ’ 3 p.m. Evensongg i 11.45 a.m. Holy ‘ (i) Mutual Responsibility and Interdependence, (ii) The Mission of the Church, which can be divided into (a) Evangelism at heme (b) Support for the Church overseas. (iii) Joint Christian co-operation in practical matters, together with better mutual understanding with other Christians, which would come under the heading of Ecumenical activities. I hope to preach about these subjects at our Churches during Lent. One of the impressions made by the Toronto Congress in 1963 was an overwhelming sense of the initiative of God and of the Church's need for a transforming renewal. The whole conception of Mutual Responsibility and Interdependence is based on a sense of this need. What we are really ask- ing for is the rebirth of the Anglican Communion. Christian revival, that sense of the Holy Spirit and the Lord's continual-presence, comes on the side of obedience to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, in witness and in mission. A mission is an act of sending. So a mission begins by means ing the act of sending and is extended to mean the people sent and the mission with which they are sent. Each Christian has in himself a mission and is a mission. If God's purpose is all-consum- ing, and we are called to share His purpose, the Christian then has enlisted in urgently important business. This conception of new relationships in mission runs right through the new thought preva ailing in the Christian Churches. It is now irrelevant to talk of "giving" and "receiving" Churches. Mission is not only giving to others, but is a sharing and receiving. It is mutual: united obedience to the one God whose mission it is. So we need to examine rigorously the sense in which we use the word "mission" as describing something we do for somebody else. It would perhaps be apposite if I said something about Ecumenism. The ecumenical movement is both an idea and an historical fcct. The idea in its abstract purity is simple enough; it is an invitation to the churches professing faith in Jesus Christ to CCZG together, in the hope that in some future date they will all be one. The coming together, to hold dialogue is the immediate goal of the idea. The final union is a desired consequence. It is very important to keep these two facets distinct. The final union of the Churches must be God‘s work, excercised in His good time. The coming together is nan‘s work, not indeed without God's grace, yet always with a human appeal to man's action founded on divine trust. The rest lies in the hands of God, whose will the ecumenist will accept with faith and obedience. I was so pleased to be able to welcome the" number of Young Wives to our Group. I do hope we shall go on from strength to strength. We would welcome all new arrivals in the village. The Young Wives meet on alternate Wednesdays at Z-30_p.n. at Bridge School. The dates will be iound in the Calendar. Yours sincerely in our Lord, COLIN E. H. Mission is the respons- ibility of the whole Church, even if only some of its members are given the privilege of being in the front line. Of course, by no means all Church members admit or accept this kind of responsibility. That is why so much of our missionary work has been and still is the special concern of voluntary missionary societies, who give it priority. They do this, however, not instead of the Church but on behalf of the Church. "We proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord and ourselves as your servants." In these two phrases we have the live main aspects of mission. In the first we present and inter- pret the Gospel: in the second we practise and illus- trate it. . As it reaches out into the world the Church has two things to offer — a message and a pattern of service. First the message. St. Paul regarded the Christian Gospel as a life—and~death matter, both for the Church and for the world. It was a matter of life~ and—death for the Church to preach it and for all men to hear it. The missionary is the result of the continuous explosion of the gospel. So for the true Christian there is no reluctance about missionary obedience; it is an inner compulsion. Something has happened, so dramatic, so dynamic for our existence, that we must talk about it. In other words, why don‘ we talk more about our faith and what it means to us? Why are we not missionaries in the dynamic sense of bringing others outside into the inside of the Christ’ ian Church? Secondly, the other main aspect of mission is a pattern of service. All work done in God's name and "‘*$-* lflfipired by His love is a continuing proclamation of * muist. The one thing that matters is obedience. *this the Church is committed. And if our Christian ‘obedience is to make any impact on this world, secular, religious or pagan, it must be a total obedience of the ‘total Christian community in every congregation. Each ' mm of us must discover our own area of obedience in praying, in giving, in witnessing and in serving. The present is the living thing which the Creator thrusts continually into our hands. Now is the moment to choose God, to do His will. I propose to give a series of sermons throughout Lent on these and kindred subjects. I do hope you will come. To Yours sincerely in Our Lord, COLIN E. H. PERRY, Vicar and Rural Dean. It is an assur- ance that the life of the Church goes on in faith and love. There is fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our midst. It should give to all of us a sense of joy. I hope you will all share in the Confirmation and be personally involved spiritually. Confirmation is the laying on of hands with prayer. In our prayers for those who will be confirmed let us each fulfil our part in the Sacrament and let us welcome them all into the Family Comnunicant life of our parish. May you all be found faithful. This will also be the first visit to our parish of the Bishop of Dover. We shall, I know, welcome him with affection. We invite the candidates, their relatives and friends, and members of the congregation to refreshments in the Village Hall after the Confirmation Service. This is the thoughtm for Easter — the power of Christ's Resurrection. That power was witnessed to, not only by, but in the love of His disciples; and must be witnessed to» by and in the lives of all members of the Holy Catholic Church to the end of time: "If ye; then be risen with Christ, seek those things that are above". Henceforth we are to strive for the heavenly mind, for -your life is hid with Christ 1n God", are always a great joy. n Tfie '00ntinual help‘ of the risen Lord is ours and in humble faith in the power of His Iggurrective Life we bring to Him our 'good desires‘ Qfi offer them up to Him on Easter Day. Not only are they two of our most important functions for raising funds to maintain our churches, but they are a wonderful opportunity _to welcome together all members of our villages, and for all to come together as a community and a family. You will find elsewhere full details of these events. We should of course be most pleased to receive gifts for the various stalls etc. We were all delighted to have Mr. Carey attend the Maundy Day ceremony and to receive the Full Maundy from H.M. The Queen. It was a great honour and richly deserved. He has served his Church well. This month we have the feast of Ascension Day. It is a day of obligation. When we say in the Apostles Creed "He (Jesus Christ) ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty", then it directs our belief and faith in the Ascension. Ascension Day reminds us that Jesus has taken our humanity into His Eternal Presence in Heaven, where He ever liveth to make intercession for us. In this age, when we are preoccupied and seem to be in the grip of material things and forces, it is well to be reminded of the Lordship of Christ and that all things have been committed into His ands» of things in heaven and things in earth. ‘ We welcome the newly confirmed, and pray that they W111 be faithful disciplined members of Holy Church hroughout their lives, and living witnesses to the S rensth of the Christian Faith. The Service of Onfirmation was a most happy and joyous occasion and we W§re delighted to welcome the Bishop of Dover on his first visit to St. Peter's, Bridge. I would like to emphasize his remarks to the parents in his sermon to s“PP0rt the young people with their presence with them at Holy Communion. SMITH (Chairman) (Bridge 25. J .J WILLIAMSON (Secretary) (Bridge 33 1 , .1-rvuu-us: rz'u Dear Parishioners of Bridge with Patrixbourne and - Bekesbourne, On Sunday, 6th June, we keep the feast of Whit. E Sunday. It is the birthday of the Holy Catholic Church. The breath of God has come upon it, even the life-giving Spirit of God. It lives, will live to eternity and its members, through this power of the Holy Spirit in progressive ages, have become an exceeding great army. We note in the Epistle for Whit Sunday the outward si ns which attended the coming of the Holy Ghost: (a? the sound as of a rushing mighty wind which filled‘ all the house; (b) the cloven tongue, like as of fire, which sat upon each of them. The sound was of a "rushing mighty wind" indicative of power and majesty, indeed, but implying that the operation of this Gift was to be — like the air of heaven e unseen except by its effects. It "filled all the house". God works through His Holy Spirit on all who call themselves Christian. The holy Church became "life". The fire, distributing from the one source, in separate tongues, is the evidence of this one Gift, the same to all, yet divided to every man severally as God wills. Sunday, the 13th June, is Trinity Sunday, when we ‘ affirm our belief in the Holy Trinity in the words of the Athanatian Creed:."and the Catholic Faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity". At St. Mary's, Patrixbourne, at Mattins we shall say the Creed of Athanasius in place of the Apostles Creed. _ May I say a few words to those newly confirmed 1n April. I do so hope and pray that you will come regularly to Holy Communion and Divine Service'and especially on Whit Sunday, when we are all reminded Of the wonderful Gift of the Holy Spirit at our own Confirmation. T I would like to draw your attention to a letter from Mr. Poole who has taken over the direction of the Bridge Youth Club. I appeal to the men of our Parish who may be interested in this work, for their help and encouragement. We are holding the Deanery Missionary Festival at St. Peter's, Bridge, on Wednesday the 16th June at 7_3Q 3,3, as Rural Dean I ask for your personal support and presence. The Rev. Alban Patola of the Diocese of Nagpur. India, will be the preacher. Afterwards there will be refreshments and a Bring and Buy stall at Bridge Village Hall. I hope as a result a good gift for the work of the Church Overseas will be obtained. We are looking forward as we go to press to a most enjoyable afternoon at Bekesbourne May Fayre and to our Church Fete at Bridge. May I say thank you to all helpers and to all of you who have given so generously to make these events a success. Full details next month. ‘If there are any Missionary or Lent Boxes still outstanding please return to Vicar or hand them in at any church service. Two pairs of Ladies gloves and one pair of Gentlemans have been found in Bridge church. Please apply to Vicar. Yours sincerely in our blessed Lord, COLIN E.H. PERRY. I am delighted that they were both a great success and most happy occasions. How lucky we were in having the use of the schools, and my grateful thanks to both the Headmistresses, Mrs. Sandal and Mrs. Knight and all our loyal helpers and friends. The tableau given by the children of Bridge School was most delightful. One is encouraged by the wonderful response, and the generosity of everybody. You will find elsewhere details of the result of our efforts. In the ecclesiastical year we now start on the long Sundays after Trinity. The great festivals of the first half of the year remind us of the main Christian truths and dogmas, and during Trinity-tide we should consolidate this teaching by studying the "theme" for each Sunday, as suggested by the Collect for the day and amplified in the teaching of the Epistle and Gospel. Many of you will be taking your holidays during the next two months. Wherever you go, if in this country, I hope you will visit the parish church, or if abroad a Christian church, to say your prayers and in a very oecumenical spirit to pray for the unity in Christ of all Christian people. I would like to congratulate Mr. James Mount, Who farms partly in Patrixbourne and Bekesbourne Parishes, on the award of the C.B.E. in the recent Honours list. Mr. Mount has a particular link Wlth St. Mary's Patrixbourne, where he was baPt1§ed and where his mother, Mrs. Spencer Mounts W0TShlPP85_ until her death only in April of this year. In addition to a chapel, refeotory, assembly hall and teaching rooms, there is study-bedroom accommoda— ‘ tion on the site for 225 students, 60 of these for 3 men. The policy of the Department of Education 1 and Science is to provide enough residential blocksw for only a proportion of students, so that every resident student must spend one or two years of his college life in a billet. Christ Church College began in 1962 with a small entry of students. When they leave this July to start their work as teachers they will be } replaced by new entry which is more than double t their numbers. During the present academic year I there have been about 90 students in billets, but for the new session the college will need a ~ approximately 70 additional places. Since its I establishment the College has been very fortunate indeed in its billet hostesses who have done much to make students feel at home and provided good facilities for them to work in quiet. But more homes are needed. Perhaps you know somebody who could help. Anyone who is interested is asked to write to the Lodgings Officer, Christ Church College, Canterbury. for details of the kind of accommodation wanted and the rate of payments made. The Lodgings Officer will call and talk things over with all prospective hostesses who return a registration card. i 7 ****************§***********¥********************** fol L l'I(‘.~1R .4i\'I) R(‘R.~lL I)EAi\’: THF REY. The word "holiday" comes from the words Holy Day. The first holidays were always Holy Days and Saints’ Days or special days in our Lord's life. Work stopped to enable all to go to Church to thank and praise God. So let us try to do the same, then we shall enjoy our holidays all the more. Remember the Church is everywhere; and it is, or at any rate can be, a joy and a privilege to share the fellowship of worship in new surroundings with other Christians. 3 For by doing so we can be loyal to our own faith, strengthen their fellowship, deepen ours and show quite clearly what sort of people we are. In most diaries you will find August 31st given as Lammas Day. This is a corruption of Loaf-man's Day and it was the day when, in accordance with ancient custom, people brought gifts of bread and wine to church, for use in the Holy Communion service. This is not done nowadays, but many people still give money at this time for the purchase of all the things required for use in the sanctuary, that is, not only bread and wine but also such things as candles for the altar, altar linen and so on. The chief feast of August is that of St. Bartholomew on the 24th. He was one of the twelve Apostles and was always closely connected with Philip. Lady Conyngham Pfobably acauired these paintings when making what was called The Grand Tour", which consisted of visiting the cultural centres of Europe and was Ih3_th?né T9 do in fashionable society at the bteinning or the 19th century. | . __ There used to be a guide to Patrixbourne Church gritten in 1959 by the Revd. Knight, Vicar at that lmev and he 81VeS a brief description of the "ind°W5 and Says they are Flemish glass paintings. ‘ ii... ' (7) ”£;, THE SWISS GLASS WINDOWS IN PATRIXBOURNE CHURCH (Cont'd.) Later on, however, a full and detailed description was published in l933 by Mr. N.E. Toke in Archaelogia Cantiana. There are several excellent half—tone illustrations in the text and it is on Mr. Toke's treatise that these notes are based. The glass is not Flemish but Swiss, the artists mostly coming from Basle, Zurich and Lucerne in north west Switzerland, and many of the coats of arms and badges depicted are those of Swiss families living at the time the Windows were painted, which was between 1530 and 1670. They are of a mixed character; some are of Biblical origin and some purely secular, and they are fine specimens of the glass painters‘ art and have stood up to the ravages of time in a remarkable manner. There are 18 panels in all: ten of them in the lancet windows at the East end of the chancel, and eight are in the South window of the Bifrons Chapel. These last are exposed to full sunlight for most of the day and yet they are in very good condition, for strong sunlight, on account of the ultra—violet ray content, is liable to break down the colours; yet these panels are in excellent shape and there seems to have been little deteriora- tion in the hundred and more years that they have been in position. ~ A great number of these glass enamel paintings were produced in the 16th and 17th centuries and they commemorated alliances between families, gifts between towns, guilds and corporations, birthday and christening presents and so on. Although most of them originated in Switzerland they were by no means confined to this country, but were common all over the Continent and many found their way to England. The amount of detail in some of the Panels in the church is extraordinary, and the visitor who wishes to make a careful study would be well advised to use a pair of good binoculars when examining them. The artist had to grind and make up his own colours, build his furnaces and in i ' fact do the whole lot from scratch, except that he might get some of his raw materials from the local alchemi°t. My dear People, All our three Churches were beautifully decorated for the Harvest Thanksgiving Services and we are very grateful to all those who helped by giving or arranging the flowers, fruit, bread and vegetables. We also thank the organists and choirs for providing the excellent music at these services. The Harvest Supper at Bekesbourne was a great success. Thank you, Mrs. Sandall and all the loyal helpers_who made it so. On St. Andrew's Day, Tuesday, 30th November, we shall remember the work of Holy Church overseas. We recall not only past service, but also present activity, holding up before God those who work in other lands to bring the power of the Gospel to the minds and hearts of men. We are hoping to maintain a chain of prayer throughout the day. It is hoped that you all will join in the wave-of prayer some time during the day at one or other of our three Churches. It is asked that those who have missionary boxes will bring them to church on the Sunday followings 5th December, when they will be presented at the altar. Elsewhere there are details about our Missionary Day on 2nd December. < All Saints Day falls on a Monday, when there will be a celebration of Holy Communion at 9.30 a.m. at Bridge Church. It is a joyous day and we should treat it as a major festival. Each generation adds to the Each age has its saint, or rather its saints. - The saints unknown are far more numerous than the saints known. It is true to say that each Parish has its saints and each one of us has that glorious possibility. ‘ I am asking all the young people whom I have Prepared for Confirmation to make a real effort to came to make_their Communion during this month-. Those Who live at Bekesbourne to come to the 8 o'clock Service at Bekesbourne Church on_the 14th November and those who live at Bridge to come to the 8 o'o1ook Holy Communion Service at Bridge Church on the Sunday following the 21st November. Advent is a time for looking forward soberly, hobefully and joyfully to the coming pf Christ. The First Sunday in Advent is the last Sunday in November, and we are called on that occasion not only to get ready for Christmas but to get ready for chrast. May it be our sincere intention and prayer ‘ *_, _,,. ...- 1-‘ ; - that he may iind us ready. For in loosing back and looking fgrward reverently, thanmiully and prayer- fully, we find Him to be indeed ever PRESENT with us, -- T4 ' sanctifying each moment and each day with dis light and radiance. Yours affectionately in our Lord, COLIN E.H. PERRY, Vicar and Rural Dean. *****-)(-**-X-***-)(-**%-—)(- THE CHURCH OVERSEAS For many years now we have made an effort during St. Andrew's—tide to remember the work of the Church overseas; but the annual meeting (at which we have had a speaker with slides to tell us about the work and also a sale to raise some money); has n 1 of late been far less well attended than formerly.p It seems fitting that now, when we are called upon to study the question of our "Mutual Responsibility and Interdependence in the Body Of Christ" (M.R.I.) we should start by giving our annual effort a wider appeal. To this end, on Thursday, December 2nd: We Shall be having not only an evening session at 7-0 P-m-_ in the Village Hall as usual, but one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Those in the mornlng and afternoon will be at Gordon House at lO.30 - 12.30 with coffee and a Bring and Buy stall. and 3$ 2.30 — 4.30 (with tea ipstead of coffee). THE CHURCH OVERSEAS (Cont'd.) Literature will be on View at all the sessions and there will be opportunities to talk about the work. We hope these arrangements will give people a reasonable choice of times to suit their convenience. We shall be grateful for gifts for the stall. Please look out for notices in the village towards the end of November. ¥*********** FROM THE PARISH REGISTERS Holy Baptism" St. Peter's, Bridge 17th October 1965 St. Peter's, Bekesbourne «l7th October l965.jfi William John Herbert Derek John Rogers _:Toni-Denise Payne St. Mary's, Patrixbourne. . >A'.l’ 26th September 1965 fiJulia Susan Southgate Holy.Matrimony..e St. Peter's, Bridge ' ' '-" 16th October i9s5..' -Gordon.Keith Levitt y ; Susan Mary Fussell Rest Eternal-Grant unto Them fiti Peter's; Bridge . 8th October 1965 Bekesbourne- O ._ llth octobet'i965 Charlotte Ovenden Florence Crouch (4) ~ ——- . _i:::i:':'_-:i ’ ,. ._,.. . . , .r __~.... _ , ._., I > _ CALENDAR FOR NOVEMBER CHRISTMAS SALE f Octob-r _ L Rlstclwentieth Sunday after Trinity _ A Christmas Sale will be held earl in D ; V;_‘vn T ingggfnvillage Hall, full details in Degemberecember I :_;s::g_ . i - . c 0- equired - gifts for st 11 - c. n n a’ ll Saints Day.
