I hope you will regard what I have said above as a gmost important matter in the maintenance of our Church life. The second important matter I would mention in this letter to youo Confirmation classes will begin on Friday the 1#th January at 7 pom. for younger people and at 8 pom. for adults. Both classes will be at the Vicarage. It would give me great pleasure to welcome at these ;classes those who would like to be prepared for the ‘Sacrament. Confirmation in the New Testament is a sign and symbol of strenthening, to enable people to enjoy and experience full membership of the Christian Church. ' (2) Each new person confirmed is a strengthening of the CALENDAR FOR JANUARY 1972 } Church in our timeo It is a Vital, symbolic, useful a V meaningful part of the discipline of the Church of England. I trust that you will endeavour to be present at Church that day. At Bridge Church there will be celebration of Holy Communion at 7.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. Lent is a way of reawakening us to our Christian duties. Lent is the penitential season when we seek a fresh insight on to the meaning of the Church and of our Lord Jesus Christ's persona and work. It would be a good thing if during Lent some might work to make it a matter of spiritual discipline to come to the Evening Service at Bridge as well as the Eucharist on Sunday and to apply their minds particularly to the subject of Christian renewal. Lent will.pass practically unnoticed if you are casual about your commitment to your Lord and His Church but if you are in real earnest about your religion the season of Lent can be a time of great earnest about your religion the season of Lent can be a time of great refreshment and blessing. Each year I ask you as part of your Lentern discipline to come to one of the weekday Holy Communion services at grigge Church on Wednesday at 9.30 a.m. or Friday at ° aomc _ Please take a Lentern self—denial missionary box which Wlll be found at the entrance of the churches. The Missionary Societies are in dire need of help. Please remember the Confirmation candidates in Your prayers. I would welcome any adult for prepar- ation for Confirmation. The class would begin on rriday the 4th February at 8 p.m. at the Vicarage. If You have not yet been confirmed please think seriously along these lines. I would personally give you every help and encouragement. On February 16th (which this year is Ash Wednes- daY) I will have been with you for eight years and on that day I will be thanking God gor the many blessings ae has given me during my ministry with you. I ask your prayers on that day for my work amongst you and "I — 5. ._ I thank you for the many kindnesses and love you have given me. There are two Saints Days this month. February 2nd is commonly called the Purification of St.Mary the Virgin. I do hope members of the Mothers Union and the Young wives Group will make a real and special effort to be present on that day at 9.30 a.m. Holy Communion at Bridge. The other Saints Day is St. Matthias Day M Thursday the 2hth February. Holy Communion will be at 9.30 a.m. on that day. St. Matthias was the apostle who was chosen to take the place of Judas to be of the member of the twelve Apostles. It is the particular da when we ask that we may be guided by faithful and true pastors to teach the faith each in their generation am time and to love and care for the souls of men.. IMPORTANT NOTICE - CHURCH ELECTORAL ROLL, 1972 Under the Church's new form of Synodical Government it becomes necessary this year for our Electoral Roll to have an entire and complete revision, which means that all whose names appear on our present roll have to re- register. May enrolment forms be completed and re- turned not later than 21st February with which request we hope ALL will comply. A person shall be entitled to have his or her on the Electoral Roll if he or she is: baptised a member of the Church of England or another Church of the Anglican Communion, and is not a member of any other religious body which is not in communion with the Church of England. of seventeen years or upwards. resident in the parish, or, if not so resident, has habitually attended public worship in the parish during a period of six months prior to enrolment, and has signed the form of enrolment. name 2%? (c) (d) (e) There was never a time when it was more essential than the present, that those who profess and call themselves Christians should boldly align themselves on the Church's side as its members. Synodical government means a greater participat- ion by the laity in church affairs. By enrolling you become a voting member of the Church and so help to Ensure that all the Councils of the Church, including he Parochial church council, the deanery synod, and the diocesan and general synods, are fully represent- ative of its members. th _ Enrolment forms are available at the west end of e churches, from the Vicar, or the Electoral Offic- ers: Mrs. P. Hulyer, 8 Bridgedown or Mrs. D. Sandal, School House, Bekesbourne. C.E.P. , JUNIOR CHURCH Junior Church will meet on Sunday February 13th, 20th and 27th at 11 a.m. _ ,Q ‘h -i...ani Notes on the History of Bekesbourne part II — The Manor of Bekesbourne /Cont'd. There was also half a fishery, which was valuable- in the days when fas s were strictly kept. Outside the arable land were pastures where cattle and sheep would be turned out onto common land. And in the woods there was pasture for six and a half hogs} we read. I There we have a sketch of the parish in the year 1080. The people clustered together round the manor house, round the houses the arable land, beyond that pastures and wood, while the little river provided its mill and saltpan and carried small ships to the sea. The community would be practically self—contained. All food came from within its borders, it ground its own corn, it made clothing from its own wool, and found its firing in the woods. Four years later, in 108%, Odo being disgraced, this manor became confiscated to the Crown. Six years later again, in 1090, we find a new name in the village which has been connected with it ever since, "Hugh Beke (a) of Livingsbourne" appears on the scene. s Three others of the same name followed him. The fourth was the celebrated William de Beke, who, in fine relgn of Henry III, held-this p1a5E‘Eh grand I Sergeanty for the service of finding one ship for the King when he passed the seas, and a present to him of three mares. In time the Manor passed out of the hands of the 3eK€ family and after various changes was purchased DY John Brown eaPlY in the fifteenth century. John Brown was plumber to Canterbury Cathedral, and seems tf have mad: money in that position. He paid 200 §?rCf for tne estates which he held for some years. flggiciy g:n%a:: theiManor to the Monks of Christ E , e ury n order to secure their prayers or the souls of his wife and himself - giving at th3 — Part II gCont'd. same time to the Shrine of St. Thomas a pax of the purest gold (b). ‘ So the Manor came into the hands of the Church. There was never a Monastery here, but a Manor House with 8 bailiff in charge. And the Prior would no doubt come over from time to time for audits and other bus- iness. He had his private rooms in the house and a little Chapel. Hasted tells us that Prior Goldston (K. Henry VII) rebuilt the Prior's apartment here, and the Chapel adjoining, dedicating it to the Annun- ciation and the Patron of the Church. He likewise built the hall adjoining the Prior's dormitory and all the buildings there except the lodge and the two barns. /To be continued.. From a pedigree supplied by Mrs. F. A. Sawyer. It is easy to have a religious commemoration of Calvary which makes little diff- erence to us in person or to the life of our Churcho But it is the loving will of our Lord that our self-denial in Lent and our Commemoration of His Suffering shall make all the difference to us and shall affect the life of our Church deeply. The times of the services in our churches during Lent, Holy week and Easter may be found elsewhere in the magazine. Mothering Sunday is kept on the Fourth Sunday in Lent, March 12th° This day is an excellent opportunity for family thanksgiving and renewal. It has been an age- long custom on this day for children to make gifts expressing gratitude to their parents and especi- ally to their mothers for the care and devotion that has been given to them. Families join to- gether in the Church for worship and to pray for God's blessing on their homes. The services to which I especially invite you to come are the 9 a.m. Holy Communion at Bridge Church and the 11 o'clock Mattins at our very beautiful Patrix- bourne Church. what a very lovely thing to do if it is a fine morning, to walk along from your house to worship there together. Then on Wednesday, March 22nd we have our rmation which this year will be held as a Deanery Confirmation at 7.30 p.m. at Littlebourne Churc . I ask your loving prayer for those young People who are to be confirmed. I would draw your attention to the two al Parochial Church Meeting and meeting for 8 election of churchwardens", which under Synodical Goverrment are the titles for your old Vestry and Annual General Meeting. These Will be Confi nAnnu ’) ‘L- , i 2* 1 ‘II-=—— I held at 7,30 p,mo on March 73th for Bekesbourne Church at Mulberry Cottage, Bekesbourne (by the kind ness of Mr, W, Mowll) and on March isth for Patrix- bourne and Bridge churches at Bridge Village Hall“ It is important that those who worship in our church should express their care and concern for all that goes on, by being present. These meetings provide opportunities for parishioners to get a clear pictun cf how their church stands financially and to look at the year's work. Holy Meek begins on Palm Sunday the 26th March. Blessed palms will be distributed at services throu, cut the day. Good Friday the Holiest Day of the ye when we commemorate the Crucifixion of Our Lord is a March 31st, Let not this day pass without your presence in prayer and penitence at one of the services» In case the April Magazine may not reach you by Easter Day which this year is on April 2nd may I wid you all a Holy and Joyous Easter Day. DGE CHURCH THCIR and OL CHOIR There was a very successful concert in Bridge Church on May 13th which was giver by Bridge Primary School Choir and instrumentalists and Bridge Church Choir. At this the first concert of its kind so far as we know, the church was completely full and everybody there seemed to enjoy the music greatly. The two choirs sang dell contrasted music. The school choir sang some jegro Spirituals, some Mozart, a folk song, music from films, a song by Britten and generally provided a lively and happy selection. The Bridge Church Choir sang six anthems from its growing repertoire including'Jesu Joy Man's 3esiring'by Bach and'Rejoice in the Lord Always‘ oy Purcell to name but two. Inevitably the Church Choir was smaller and utterly different in character when compared to the larger children's choir and it lacked something of the sheer exuberance and vivacity of the latter; but it did provide a sophistication which the larger choir lacked. The whole evening was most successful and many people have said they would like another one soon. 3Veryb“df sang Parry‘s “Jerusalem” to finish. The organist was Mr, Gordon Chapman, the School Cioir was conducted by Mr. Mine dindess and t;e dhurch Choir by Mr. Peter Giles. Dear Parishioners of Bridge Patrixbourne and Bekesbourne, First may I congratulate the Rev. Philip Holden on the commemoration of sixty years in Holy Orders on St. Matthews Day. He was ordained deacon in Chester Cathedral in 1912. His ministry still continues with us and it has given much happiness to many of us. May it continue for many years to come. Have you a son or daughter aged between seven and eleven. Our parish churches at Bridge and Bekesbourne needs boys and girls of this age for the Choir. what have our choir to offer? A choir gives musical training and enjoyment of music making. It also gives Christian training, character building and the development of alert- ness and self-confidence. Mill being in the Choir take up a lot of time? Bearing in mind the demands of homework, rehearsals are kept to a minimum. How does one join? Parents are invited to bring or send their son or daughter to Church at one of the following times: 6.h5 p.m. on Wednesday at Bekesbourne Church or 5.30 p.m. on Sunday at Bridge Church. Bekesbourne has been connected with the Cinque Port Confederacy from time immemorial. we may call it a seafaring place on its own river, with its passage to the sea, and with its own ship for many generations. It will be well, however, to say first a little about the Cinque Ports themselves. The Confederacy takes its name from the five ports, Hastings, Sandwich, Dover, Romney and Hythe. To which were added later the "Two Ancient Towns" of winchelsea and Rye. a|:*=k**=0-II: L...._* BARHAM CREMATORIUM The Beautiful Garden of Remembrance (overlooking Btoolne Perk) is open to visitors daily. I would especi- ally commend to.your respect the Commonwealth war Graves Commission whose representative visits and inspects every.year the three war Graves of Gnro Leadbetter, AoCoIo Vidler and Gnr. Smith in Bridge Churchyard and the 1914=18 war Grave of Gnr. Goldup in Bekesbourne Churchyard. May their souls be remembered on Remembrance Sunday which this year is On November 12th. A short service of Remembrance at the War Memorials will be held beginning five minutes before the usual morning services at the three churcheso The month of November beginning with All Souls Day ends with the Feast of St. Andrew on Thursday the 30th November. It is a month which sets us thinking about Saintly lives as the supreme evi- dence of the truth of Christianity and about the Calling to be saints which is the meaning and Purpose of being Christian at all“ There is in the Saints an inner joy which reflects Christ in the Christian and makes him like Sta Andrew one who draws others to the secret which he has found. St» Andrew's Day may I remind you is a day when the emphasis of our prayers will be on the mission- ary task of the Church at home and overseas, and I '3 L trust that at the 9.30 a.m. Holy Communion at Bridge Church on this day many more than the usual small number will come tc the Church to keep this day with zeal and hope. I propose to bring Confirmation Classes early in the New Year. Confirmation is the ministry by which tprough prayer with the laying on hands by the Bishop the Holy Spirit is received to complete what he began in Baptism and to give strength for a Christian life. I would be most happy to know the names of any adult or young person who wishes to be confirmed and is desirous of receiving instruction. Please think seriously about this matter if you have not yet received the sacrament of Confirmation. On Saturday December 2nd we shall be holding our Christmas market. Further details will be in the December Magazine. As I hope to have this maga—. zine printed early would you be so kind as to let me have all magazine matters for the December issue by November 17th. They controlled one of the chief food supplies, that of the Herring Fishery, and they provided practically the whole of the fighting force at sea, and so may claim to be the parents of the British Navy. _ In their day these towns were of unparalleled importance. Their people were the Cinque Port Q- Barons, and still are called by that Clplfl. Their privileges were unique, and at the coronation of our Kings the Cinque Port Barons carried the pall over the King and were placed at the Coronation feast at his right hand. we must see how they came to occupy such important positions. The Herring Fishery must be spoken of first. Every year the ships ofthe Ports went to fish off the coast of Norfolk. Off the spot where Yarmouth now stands was a sandbank on which the Portmen dried their nets, and which their Fair was held. All the control of this Yarmouth Fishing was in their hands, and they maintained great state. This naturally led to thah'other service to the State. These ships were easily transformed into fighting vessels and so were used for both purposes. In 104%, Edward the Confessor was in command of his own ships raised by contributions from the nation, but he could not bring himself to continue the oppressive taxation which was necessary to carry this on. It was a natural idea then to incorporate the Cinque Ports for the purpose of a fighting force at sea. These towns had the necessary harbours, men and ships. It was only necessary to make it worth their while to provide the necessary fleet whenever it was wanted. /To be continued . . . . Dear Parishioners of Bridge, Patrixbourne, and Bekesbourne, The Christmas market for Bridge and Patrixbourne churches will be held on Saturday December 2nd from 2.30 p.m. onwards. I«am hoping that this magazine will reach you in time to ask your loyal and enthusiastic support of this event. Elsewhere you will find a list of all the various stalls. The stallholders would be grateful for any gifts for these stalls. Please support us too by your presence. we look forward very much to this pleasant dual occasion which provides too such a good opportunity for fellowship. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Mr. Jack Hopkins amd Mr. Jack Carpenter our respected and beloved vergers on their recent bereavements. we assure them both of our loving prayers and thank God for the lives of their loved ones, lived within the fellowship of Holy Church. At Christmas we reiterate our belief in the Doctrine of the Incarnation. when the Son who abides in the Father becamalncarnate. He became for us the 'place' where the Father is to be known and believed, for He is the ‘place’ where God is to be found. But'place' is here stretched beyond its ordinary use and must be interpreted 'elastically' in accordance with the nature of God and Hisactivityin revelation and redemption through Incarnation as well as in accordance with the nature of the creaturely human being inxahich He became incarnate for our sakes. In other words Christ is 'in' us through sharing our bodily existence, but He is also 'in' the Father through His oneness with Him. In the January magazine I will be saying mmmthingabout the meaning of Confirmation. In the meanwhile I should be glad to have the names of any, both adult or young persons who is desirous of being prepared for this Sacrament. They were given lands, they were given the freedom of the seas, and they were allowed to try their own law casest All this, coupled with their loyalty, made it well worth their while to fight when required. So for #00 years they guarded the shore and kept the Sate of England. Even later than that they still held an important but humbler position, till in 1626 they made their last contribution in the reign of Charles I, consisting of two ships only. Thus closed the more active days of the Cinque Port Confederacy. but it exists still as a glorious mounument of the past, and from time to arm all the pageantry and old world glory of the nut is revived on the occasion of a Court of ifiptherhood and Guestling. It remains to point out the connection of Bekesbourne with the Confederacy. It will have been realized that the Cinque Ports had before them in old days a heavy task, and needed all the help they could obtains They therefore summoned various towns and villages to their aid, such places being spoken of as "Limbs" or "Members" of the ports. _Bekesbourne in this way became a “Limb” of Hastings which was the Head Port, and provided one ship to tne_Hast:ngs Contingent.
