JANUARY 2004 7.30PM Canterbury Choral Society have already received many accolades for their performances this year with The Canterbury Festival. Mahler’s Symphony No 3 and Britten’s War Requiem were outstanding and deiighted audiences. Richard Cooke, Conducto-r of The Choral Society has chosen a very varied programme for 2004 and the first concert will feature Fauré and Haydn-. Faure’s Requiem is on one level touchingly simple, but at the same time a work of great stature and depth, full of beautiful. melodies and richly. but subtly harmonised for choir and orchestra. Fauré died. in- 1924 and recoginlition came to him slowly as his music was felt to be too contemporary. At the age of 47 he became a national inspector of principal conservatories and went on to become chief organist at th.e Madeieine in Paris and composition professor with pupils who included Ravel. Haydn’s Nelson Mass i_s a formidable work, often suggesting what was emerging in Vienna at the time with the music of Beethoven. There are climaxes of tell-ing splendour, the whole being taut and dramatically powerful. Haydn was the son of a wheelwright. and was trained as a choirboy from the age of 8. He worked as a freelance musician, playing violin and keyboard instruments. As with many famous composers, he was employed by a member of the arristocracy, Prince N-ikolaus Esterhaza. Haydn ioved. England and English audiences. His concerts here were a critical and popular success and to his great pleasure Oxford University awarded him a Doctorate of Music. Tickets can be booked by telephone from the Canterbury information Centre on 01227 378188 or by e«-mail on boxoffice@canterbury.gov.uk. We had fun with, among others, some first footing in Scotland, grglpe eating in Spain, party peppers (Firecrackers) in China and a goo dose of laughter in Japan. All of these traditions mark the beginning of a new year in the same way, by getting rid of all that was bad or unhappy about the past year and invoking a good or happy year ahead. We do much the same thing in England with our tradition of making new year resolutions. As the new year starts We turn over a new leaf, or make a fresh start, or promise to do things differently, in order to make the new year better than the last. But I wonder, when you think of your resolutions this year, just who will benefit from you making or breaking them? I suspect that most of us make promises to change things for our own good, and if others benefit as well, that's a useful side effect, but not of much importance. This focus on ourselves can be positive if we are honest and pritical and seriously want to change, but most resolutions don't last very ong. Perhaps we should not be so ambitious. Bad habits or attitudes take a long time to form and can take an even longer time to change. The Christian journey of being more ‘godly’ is one that takes a lifetime (and even then we are still far from perfect). If we set our sights at a more realistic level, we may have more chance of success. Instead of expecting things to change overnight because of a new year, we could take a leaf from the book of someone not always noted for his wisdom. Frank Spencer (husband of the long suffering Betty) was always trying to improve - one day at a time. My new year’s resolution this year is ”every day, in every Way, I'm getting better and better”. May God's blessing upon you and those you love, one day at a time. £r”czu[ Your Tarish ‘Matters ' s 11/01 Bridge Sam Edward Greenstreet Fungal 22/ 12 Barham (Bekesbourne) Edward C. Tenryu was the location of the Prisoner of War camp where Bill (as he is known locally) kept notes documenting his period of captivity constructing the Hiraoka Dam. Now, in happier times, a junior high school occupies the former labour camp site, and the region of Nagano hosted the 1998 winter Olympics. Bill's diary has been incorporated into The Imperial War Museum collection, London, and in August 2002 his book ' You Shook My Hand ‘was launched at Bridge Village School. Bill's journey of reconciliation has been an inspiration to many. The elders of Tenryu have built a memorial celebrating Bill's book and his visit, and they wish to promote goodwill and lay the foundations for future exchanges between our two villages. As part of this initiative, 16 students from Tenryu school will visit Bridge from 20-28 March 2004. The students are studying Bill's book, ‘You 5/wok My Hand ‘as part of their social studies curriculum, and wish to extend their understanding of the English language and our way of life. The itinerary currently being planned for the Japanese visitors includes a demonstration of origami (the Japanese traditional art of folding paper into intricate designs) at Bridge Village School, a meeting with the Mayor of Canterbury, and a visit to the Simon Langton School for Boys. If you would like to host a Japanese student (£110 per week) please contact: Valerie de Furrentes M.A. Cert. Ed. MY TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS On the first day of Christmas my true love said to me. “I’n1 glad we bought fresh turkey and a proper Christmas Tree". On the second day of Christmas, much laughter could be heard as we tucked into our turkey, a most delicious bird. On the third day we entertained the people from next door. The turkey tasted just as good as it had the day before. Day four. relations came to stay; poor Gran is looking bld. We finished up the Christmas pud and ate the turkey cold. On the fifth day of Christmas, outside the snow flakes flurried. But we were nice and warm inside, for we had our turkey curried. On the sixth day, I must admit, the Christmas spirit died. The children fought and bickered, we ate turkey rissoles, fried. On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love he did wince, when he sat down at the table and was offered turkey mince. Day eight, and nerves were getting frayed. the dog had run for shelter. I served up turkey pancakes, with a glass of Alice Seltzer. On the ninth day our cat left home, by lunchtime Dad was blotto. He said he had to have a drink to face turkey risotto. By the tenth day the booze had gone (except our home made brew)- And if that wasn’t bad enough we suffered turkey stew. On the eleventh day of Christmas, the Christmas tree was moulting- The mince pies were as hard as rock and the turkey was revolting. On the twelfth day, my true love had a smile upon his lips — The guests had gone, the turkey too - and we dined on fish and chips. The office is staffed, the drivers are hired and the cars are serviced and taxed. But there is one problem — they have no money to buy petrol!’ What's the point of maintaining roadworthy cars, complete with drivers, if the taxis can't do their job of carrying passengers? Well, that's the problem our local churches (and most other churches as well) are up against. We cannot make ends meet from month to month. Voluntary giving allows us to maintain our church buildings, unless the roof falls in and we have to fund raise. Most of our income is paid directly to the Diocese who use it to provide a full time vicar, complete with vicarage, and a whole raft of support services that would cost. a lot more if each church tried to go it alone. Our trouble is that we don't have any income left to do anything after paying all the bills. In fact, each of our parishes is as much as £500 a month short of what is needed for us to provide the level of pastoral care that we think you deserve. 55000000. The only thing we can do is ask our parishioners and friends to dig a bit deeper to help us out. The good news is that the tax man will help us, giving back 28p for every £1 you give, as long as you pay tax. The problem is not impossible to solve. For example, we would balance the books if every magazine subscriber simply gave an extra £1 each month. Or perhaps you could give the equivalent price of a pint of best a week, or 20 cigarettes, or a gallon of unleaded, or the Sunday papers, or even a lottery ticket. If you value the active presence of a church in your community, maybe through your experience of a wedding, baptism or funeral, at hospital, or home visit, or by our work in Bridge Primary School, please give this appeal some thought. Anything extra you can give will help us to help you. May God’s blessing be upon you and those you love. flizzuf Your Warish. Then in the week before Christmas at the ever-popular carol sin ing at the Unicorn, it was standing room only and a contribution of 1313 was made to church funds. A large congre ation came to the Midnight Communion led by John orrock and the c urch was full to capacity at the Carol Service on Christmas Day. J onathan Cowans ably led this service and we were pleased to welcome Paul back with us to give the blessing. Many thanks to Rosalie Stacey for the part she played on the organ at all the services. The hall will be open from 6 pm for members to stage their exhibits prior to judging, with the presentation of prizes at 7.30 pm. Refreshments will be available during the course of the evening and there will also be a raffle. It is hoped to run a plant bring and buy stall for which contributions will be very welcome. We shall be taking names at the Show of those who want to take part in the "Chairman's Challenge" at the Summer Show. For this, Roger Austin, our Chairman, has kindly agreed to produce and distribute small seedlings, possibly Ger-aniums, at an appropriate stage for members to grow on themselves and subsequently enter at the Summer Show. If you are interested and will not be at the Spring Show, then please give your name to one of the Committee members. A reminder that you need to be a member to exhibit at the shows, but you can actually join on the day. Membership remains for this year at £2.50 for a single person and £4 for a family. Finally, show schedules for both shows are available now from Committee members. BridggHistory Society Our Members Evening, held at the Red Lion, was a great success. Alan Walton told us about the chequered history of the Elham Valley Railway, built at a staggering cost of £27,000 a mile, and beset with problems from the start. Roger Mardon gave us the story of the local fire service - the funding, the fire fighting, the engines and the volunteers. Both talks were full of interest, with tales of the personalities involved and the challenges they experienced. Both were well illustrated with fascinating slides. For our next meeting we will meet once again the School Hall, Bridge at 7.30 on Tuesday 9 March. The speaker will be Professor Ted Parker who will be talking about developments in clocks and timepieces, items which have influenced the way people live. This talk will be followed, on 17 April, by a visit to Belmont House with its wonderful collection of clocks, watches and paintings. Canterbury Choral Society Canterbury Choral Society will perform Handel's Israel in Egypt at Canterbury Cathedral on Saturday 27th March 2004 at 7.30pm. Tickets for this concert can be purchased from the Canterbury Information Centre on 01227 378188 — or by e—mail on boxoffice@canterbury.gov.uk ~. EAST MEETS WEST B +~ East meets West extends warmest thanks to the residents of Bridge offering to share their homes with the Japanese school children arriving in the village on 2_0 March. Those taking part now form a host family network, with many members personally known to each other, and in contact by telephone and e-mail. Several of Bill Rose's friends have generously contributed to the programme of events and activities, providing additional interest and entertainment for the guests. The visitors are from the village of Tenryu, similar in size to Bridge, a few hours by train north west of Tokyo. The village straddles the banks of the Tenryu river in the central mountain range of Honshu Island. Despite their relative proximity to Tokyo, the Japanese teenagers have little exposure to the sophisticated urban life of the capital, and almost no personal experience of western culture. Compared to some of their western contemporaries, the Japanese are considered hard working, highly disciplined and extremely courteous. The Tenryu school children are currently engaged in a pro ject to make 1000 origami cranes, symbol of peace and goodwill, to lay at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in August this year. Some of the cranes will be brought to the special Evensong on Sunday 21 March at Canterbury Cathedral, and placed at the High Altar during the service. During their stay our guests will be demonstrating and teaching the art of origami to children at Bridge School and Kent College. Pupils at both schools will be encouraged to make and sign origami cranes for inclusion in the collection destined for Hiroshima. The pilgrimage to Bridge provides an opportunity for the visitors to meet Mr William Rose, author of You Shook My Hand. Bill forged profound friendship and made many acquaintances during his visit to Tenryu in 1999. His journey, described in the final chapter of the book, provides a moving account of reconciliation. Following on from the success of his first publication, based on extracts from his diaries written as a POW in Mitsushima, (now renamed Tenryu) Bill is awaiting a publisher for the second edition. The later version, titled From Bluebell Hill to Kanose and Return, gives a fuller account of his experience. Bill and I invite you to join us, together with the Japanese visitors, in a special Evensong at Canterbury Cathedral, Sunday 21 March, 15.15hrs. Thank you again for your kindness and messages of goodwill. Valerie de Furrentes East meets West 01227 832851 vdf@supanet.com PROPOSED PARISH OUTING. Book now to avoid disapointment The Organ at Bekesbourne We thought you would be interested to know that the organ in Bekesbourne Church has recently been inspected by the British Insti- tute of Organ Studies, who list interesting organs throughout the British Isles. The inspector was most impressed by what he found and at a recent meeting, the Institute decided to award the organ a certifi- cate Grade II* in recognition of it being a fine instrument. The grading is similar to building listing, so is very close to being of the highest quality. The certificate, which will be hung near the organ, states that the organ ‘is therefore listed in the Institute's Register of Historic Pipe Organs as being an instrument of importance to the national heritage and one deserving careful preservation for the benefit of future generations.‘ Built by Bevington of Soho in about 1877, the organ is in its original position in the church and is in virtually its original condition, apart from the installation of a balanced swell pedal in the 19603. Many organs made been modified because they have been moved to new positions. There were plans to move our organ to the back of the church in the 1950s but, fortunately it now seems, the scheme was never followed up. Charities are now being approached to fund a full restoration and cleaning of the instrument and it will form part of a local appeal to restore both the bells and organ to be launched shortly. Jane Millyard Friends of Bekesbourne Church Wine and Wisdom 11 teams battled it out in a keenly contested event at Bekesbourne Village Hall, Friday 5th March. Interesting and varied questions were asked by Dorothy King and her son Roger, who as last years winners researched for the quiz. Scoring was done by Rev Paul Filmer who displayed the totals via a lap top computer to a large screen. He was assisted by Jill Gillander-s, Margaret Clarke and Eileen Piggott also from last years winning team. Congratulations to this years ‘Brains of Bekesbourne‘, Pat Kusels team who won by a nose. £400 was raised for the Friends of Bekesbourne Church. Well done and thank you to every one. BEKESBOURNE CHURCH SPRING CLEANING is definitely in the air and so it is proposed to have 2 WORKING PARTIES on Saturday 3rd April starting at 10 am! We hope for a good turn—up of people and their strimmers to tidy the Churchyard — all who like working outside will be very welcome. We also think it might be a good opportunity for those who enjoy cleaning and polishing to come along to spring clean the Church! We now have quite a few new and recently recruited Church Cleaners (as distinct from Flower Arrangers) and if we can clean and prepare the Church for Easter it will give everyone the opportunity to be involved. we are planning to do this twice a year, so that the Church always looks well cared for, and so that those on the regular cleaning rota do not feel it is too major‘ a task Do please think about joining us to do a worthwhile job — and bring your dusters and polish as well. Those red envelopes will be dropping onto the doormat once again as the time for our house to house collection comes round. Last year the Tremendous total of over £1350 was raised and over half of that sum was "gift aided", so the total sum raised was nudging £1600! Remember, if you are a tax payer and indicate this fact on the envelope, then an extra sum equal to almost 30% can be claimed from the tax man with no further effort on your part! £5 buys rice for a family in Sierra Leone to plant, providing food, income and seeds for next season. £10 pays for taps and troughs to provide two villages in Bolivia with a safe and reliable water supply. Certainly, when I hear of another couple reaching 50 or 60 years of marriage I think of everything we have done in 25 years, and wonder what we will do with the next 25. In our pick and mix culture, where lifetime guarantees last a year or two, words like always and never are used carelessly, and permanent means until you change your mind, is it any surprise that numbers getting married are down, and divorce rates are higher than ever? Marriage vows are meant to be a life long contract between husband and wife, whatever the world throws at them, and, within reason, whatever they throw at each other! So why do we give up so easily when things go wrong? Not just in the big things like marriage but in anything that takes conunitment, effort, time or concentration. Perhaps its just easier for us to walk away, or something more interesting comes along, or we get bored and fancy a change. We are encouraged to buy now - pay later, and TV remote controls combine-d with 50 satellite channels turn us into chanilel hoppers. Compare this with the example that God gives for our reassurance and encouragement, Issue Christ is the some yesterday and today and forever. In other words, he has never changed, and he will never change. Donald Lugg Tribute to Ethel Cartwright Ethel Cartwright was involved with many village events. She was a committee member for the Horticultural Society, Treasurer of the After School Club and helped at the annual fete and other events, She taught Yoga in Bridge and Lower Hardres for many years. She will be remembered for the years she worked at the Post office. After that she began to arrange day outings by coach to gardens and theatres which everyone appreciated. Ethel was pleased to know that her trips are going ahead thanks to Mr <5: Mrs Barling from Barham. Ethel's great love was music and for many years she sang soprano in St. Edmund's Choral Society. Personally she was very kind to me through my husband's last illness and after his death. A strong and determined lady she fought her illness with typical courage. She will be sadly missed. Mavis Par-sons EAST MEETS WEST The visitors from Tenryu left Bridge after a week which exceeded all expectations. thanks to the residents of Bridge, and supporters of East Meets West, our guests had an exciting and interesting trip. Inevitably, there were the unforeseen problems encountered in every new undertaking, all of which were quickly resolved. However, next year I will ensure that the Japanese come equipped with a basic phrase book or dictionary. The Japanese Ambassador has contacted me recently to ask for photographs to illustrate a feature on the Tenryu visit for the next edition of the Japanese Embassy magazine. We have permission to use the press pictures, but would welcome further contributions by anyone else involved in the project. The Daiwa Ang|o—Japanese Foundation, North London, has made a similar request. Please send any photographs, with supporting text, to me, and I will forward them. The submitted material may also be included in the East Meets West website, due to be launched at the end of April. Ann Edmonds St. Peter‘ 3 Church Bekesbourne Bell and Organ Restoration Pro iect It was at the end of last year that a committee was formed to organise and oversee this exciting project for the restoration of the Organ and Bells at St. Peter's Church Bekesbourne. To celebrate the official launch of this project there is to be an OPEN DAY at Bekesbourne Church on Saturday 12*“ June between 10.00 am and 6 pm. You are all invited to come and see exactly what is involved in the restoration, what it will mean for our historic church and how fund raising is progressing. The target is £45,000 and over the past six months the committee has been busy applying for grants from various organisations to help raise funds. We are pleased to report that over 30% of the total amount required has already been pledged with further applications still to be considered. We also hope that you will want to help as well! Information on how you can make a difference will be available at the church on the OPEN DAV when you will have the opportunity to see and hear the bells being rung between 11 a.m. and 12 noon and again from 2p.rn. to 3p.m. Should anyone be interested in playing the organ you are invited to bring some music with you and ‘have a go'. The Parish Council thanked Simon for his hard work for the Parish. Speed Camera Training: Volunteers are still needed to undertake training to use speed cameras. Anyone with time to spare and an interest in road safety should contact the parish clerk. Street lighting: The Parish Council agreed to pass control of the village street lighting back to the City Council. This has been necessary due to the shortfall in the concurrent function funding from the City Council for 2004/ 2005. Strategic Rail Authority Concern was raised about the Strategic Rail Authority's plans to cut the services to Bekesbourne Station. It seems that the plans are based on inaccurate passenger data and with very little consultation of rural Parishes. This is our nearest station and the proposed reduction in services will mean more car journeys, more parking problems and more environmental damage. Refuse Collection The Parish Council was divided over the issue of the new refuse collections proposed by the City Council. By the Chairman's casting vote, the Council agreed to oppose the plans. Although it was felt that bi- weekly collections might encourage some to increase recycling there was concern that the kind of rubbish that cannot be recycled (nappies, meat products, cooked food etc) could cause smells, attract rats and lead to health risks, especially in hot weather. It was noted that other councils that had tried the scheme had reverted to weekly collections and that some people put their ordinary waste into recycling bins, thus ruining the recycling effort. The Parish Council noted the poor communication from the City council about the proposals. These days however, pressing the shutter release is only the beginning. instead of being the final irnage the photo now moves to the computer where it can be rnan.ipu.lated in all sorts of ways. We can no longer say the camera never lies. But even traciitioinal photos can give a false picture if the subject has been artificially posed. This has most recently been proved with the photos of Iraqi prisoners being mistreated by British troops, When challenged, the publ.ishing newspaper changed its cla.i.:m that the photos were authentic to a true representation. of the sort of thing that happened! Iinmediateily the photos lost all credibility, as would an eye witness in court who wasn't actually there. Testimony whether spoken or pphotographie needs to be authentic to be of any value. For 2000 years the Bible has been held. up as a primary sou.rc:e of evidence for the existence and works of God. its power to change lives does not rely on hearsay or fairy stories but on the testimony of eye witnesses with first hand experience. Canterbury has been awash with St George flags and England team shirts were worn as a sign of support for the nadonal team. But one man in articular was held up as the saviour of English pride, who would lea us to victory and bring home the Euro ean trophy. David Beckham (or should we say Saint David) entered e first game against France with the hope of the nation on his shoulders —- and all went well until he stepped up to take our first penalty. And he missed!!! Of course, he may ave redeemed himself between me this letter and you reading it. England may well have picked themse ves up and gone onto greater things, but he still missed that penalty. We face a problem every time we elevate someone to super hero, in whatever specialism, because nobody is perfect. Eve one makes mistakes, sometimes at the worst time imaginable, wi the worst possible consequences. Holding someone at as a perfect role model can only lead to di.ssa'pointment. We might reac. perfection on occasion, but to remain perfect all the time is ‘beyond any of us. -Medieval archers were said to have ‘synned’ whenever they missed the bull's e e of their tar et because they had failed to take a perfect shot. And we all sin (or miss i e mark) when we miss the bull's eye of living a perfect life. Only one man has ever lived a perfect life, without sin, meetin God's standards for a godly existence, and that is Jesus Clhrist. Wit ‘ the Christian faith we look to him as our role model and inspiration. We may not wear special shirts or fly flags on our cars, but we follow our team captain with total trust and commitment, confident that he has won. for us a trophy much more precious than any man made award - the keys to heaven itself. Lawrence Dunderdale Editor 830668 Christian Aid Week 2004 Very many thanks for the support given to our house to house collection for Bridge, Patrixbourne and Bekesbourne when £1,416.36 was banked as a result of your generosity and the efforts of the collectors. Almost half of the total sum was gift-aided and therefore the true total, after the tax allowances are applied, is over £1,650. It was encouraging to see the gift-aid element grow from last year's total because it's money available to the charity at no further cost to the giver! Very many thanks to you all for your part in achieving this marvellous result to enable Christian Aid to continue and develop its programmes for fair trade and the relief of poverty. I am happy to report that neither did it discourage visitors and we enjoyed a steady flow of people throughout the day. Display boards were erected in the church with information on both the bells and organ together with details of restoration work. There was a working model of a bell to see, plus a static display of organ pipes. We were most fortunate to have two very capable and experienced church organists who had been invited to join us on Saturday to play the organ which everyone enjoyed and appreciated. Several of our visitors were abo talented players md they had the opportunity to play the organ as well. Bridge Methodist Church Aug 1st Mr Reg Ward Aug 8th Mr Peter Burt Aug 15th Rev. David Marshall Aug 22nd Mr John Ellis Aug 29th Miss Jean Hall Children's Activities at Church In May we launched 2 new children's groups in Bridge. ‘The Works’ now happens at the Village Hall from 9.45 to 11.15 every 4th Sunday in the month (except August.) We were delighted to see so many children for our first session. We built towers out of huge cardboard boxes, made clay statues and decorated gingerbread men. In June we made stone animals and lion masks. We have the puppets Peter and Mary, performing thanks to our brilliant young puppeteers. We have heard exciting stories, played games and learned some great action songs. There's room for a few more children, please come along if you'd like to give it a try. The next session will be 26th September. Sessions have been free so far, but from September we'll ask for a contribution (50p per child/£1 per family) to cover the cost of art materials. ‘The Upper Room‘ has also been a success. We love our venue upstairs at the Plough and Harrow (Thanks Chris and Melanie!) but here there's not room for many more! We meet at 9.15 on the 1st Sunday in the month (next session 5th September). We try to fit in a craft activity, story, memory verse, song and games before joining the adults in church for Communion. We've been made really welcome in church - it's lovely to be together as God's family of all ages. We hope you like our songs even if they're a bit noisy and not quite what you're used to! None of this would have happened without the brilliant family services that are already established and Paul's great work in our school - Thank you! Also a big Thank you to the team of leaders who have been helping. Your prayers and support are both equally appreciated. Ruth Washington 831156 Health and Healing There will be no meeting in August but the cycle of prayer continues until we meet again on Thursday 2nd September, 7pm, at 7 Windmill Close. Please let me have your requests for sickness, bereavement, anxiety, loneli- ness or any other situation you are concerned over, so that prayers can be added to the prayer list for the month of August and until we meet again in September. The group as individuals will continue to pray for those on the prayer list so that the cycle of intercessions is not broken. Kath Pierce 830844 E_i_$_!'_i News The next two Coffee Pop-ins at Bridge Village Hall will be on Wednesday August 11th and Wednesday September 8th from 10 to 11.15am. We are always hoping for more volunteer drivers. Please telephone Ann Medhu.rst on 830762 if you think you might be able to help, however occasionally. It's a great way to make friends. Church ‘lard Working Party A very big thank you to every one that turned up for the church yard working party at St Peters chuch Bekesbourne, on the morning of Saturday 18th September. We are very grateful! to have so many willing volunteers give up their time to help keep our church yard looking so neat and tidy. You are all very much appreciated. Gill Moon Lost Boules Having recently taken up residence in Bekesbourne, one of the, if not t_h_e_ friendliest and prettiest hamlets in Kent, I am disappointed at having to have the following published in ‘On The Nail‘. Following the annual Boules Competition held at The Unicorn and enjoyed by the attending families as a night of fun, I am very disappointed to learn that someone has forgotten to return two sets of boules from the competition. Since these boules belong to the Pfizer Company the lady who borrowed them is now faced with the cost of a replacement of two sets of boules. I now ask most sincerely that whoever forgot to leave them, they return them to Clive and Cheryl at The Unicorn and nothing more will be said. When this happens we can all look forward to a good night next year. ' Yours in gratitude - L Kingston FRIENDS OF BEKESBOURNE CHURCH CONKERS AT THE UNICORN The Unicorn pub Bekesbourne will be hosting it's annual canker tournament Sunday 7th October to help raise funds for The Friends Of Bekesbourne Church. I was reminded. the other day of a prank I once. played on our children. I told them that if they behaved 'I:hernsel;ves over a few days I would ‘show them our water otter. Excited, they were the very models of good behaviour At the allotted time I agreed to show them the water ‘otter. ‘I showed them the central heating boiler. They were not amused. And we've all heard the old chestnut "Send reinforcements, we're going to advance” was received as "Send three and fourpence, were going‘ to a dance”. Sometimes what we say, how we say it and how it is understood are very different. Worlcing in a pub; double entendres are a daily occurrence. y ; There are three. separate components of any message; the sender, the medium and the receiver. I knowwhat I want to say to you but if I send it by e—mai1 and you haven't a computer the message fails. Or I tell" it you in Japanese. Or if you simply do not Want to hear. As I continue my training" I am often confronted with difficult passages of scripture. A piece I know to contain "truth? but which will not reveal itself to Info. You know" "there is something in there but you cannot reach it. But with patience, with prayer" and with humility, sometime _the "truth" is revealed. And: to me that is sometimes one of the most Wonderful experiences I know. The joy of revealing God's holy‘ word. It will not be the same message for every one of 113. Each of it will interpret it slightly different. Some will have already seen it. My children refer to it as the "Der” .moment. "Der, Dad, of course it is” implying a level of supreme stupidity when I am bewildered by something. I guess they are still getting revenge for the water otter incident. With a cast of around fifty local children -and adults and a back stage team that was almost as large, it was a fantastic team event for the parishioners of St Peter's and their friends in neighbouring villages. The production was assisted financially by Canterbury City Council which contributed £500 from its Can Do Fund and the Millennium Awards for A11 scheme which provided £2000. The show gave a captivating insight into the history of the village of Bekesbourne and through photographs and recorded voices brought to life the trials and triumphs of the people who have lived in the village over hundreds of years. Bekesbourne has long been a hop growing village and among the highlights of the show were the reminiscences about hop picking told first from a Londoner's point of view and then from a local viewpoint. Afterwards many in the audience had their own stories to tell about hop picking locally. The church was both an evocative setting for the story and a player in its own right, having been at the heart of the village since Saxon times. The Son et Lumiere was timed to celebrate the ten year anniversary of the Friends of Bekesbourne Church and the show closed -with a review of the work of the ‘Friends’ since it was formed in 1994 as a group intent upon saving St Peter's from the threat of closure. The Friends‘ fundraising events have been the catalyst for a renewed community spirit in Bekesbourne which, as the script reminded us, continues to thrive as a vibrant award —winning village despite having lost its post office, shop and school in the last decades of the 20th century. a Congratulations to all concerned and we look forward to the opportunity to purchase a CD of the show so that we can watch and listen again at our leisure. It’ s the story of the village of Fairacre and what goes on! A newcomer, Vanessa, with her cigarettes, her fluffy scarlet petticoat, her annoying habit of borrowing money and her generous ways, comes to live there with her husband and children. She is not welcomed! She is pregnant and when her husband is away the baby boy decides to enter this World. The two neighbours, Margaret and Mary, are forced to help even though it might spoil their own Christmas Day! Nevertheless they clean the cottage, care for the children and share their own Christmas dinner with them. They have a great time and it suddenly dawns on the two women that there is so much love in that young Mum and that Inessy cottage with new-“born baby sleeping happily in the drawer! The final words of the story are from Margaret, ‘There's room for all sorts in Fairacre, Mary, but it took a new—born babe to show us.’ You know this reminded me of another baby boy, born in a manger. He entered a grubby old stable and yet He was God’s Son, God incarnate, who came to bring Good News of salvation to everyone. As ]ohn’s Gospel says, "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in may not perish, but may have eternal life.” This surely means that we can have a Wonderful, forgiving relationship with God through Christ now because He took our sins on Him and was crucified. Yes, I can hear you say, "’What about the commercial side of Christmas? That is over the top - September Chrismias cards!! I agree, but perhaps we need to dig deeper into the Christmas message and all it means. Jesus didrft stay in the stable. He strode out into our selfish world, where religion had become rules with little love. He befriended the outcasts, the ‘sinners’ and shocked the religious people of that day. He preached, he healed and he loved and cared for everyone. He was the human face of God; God in action, showing us how to live. The result? He was executed, but God raised Him from the dead and He is alive for ever. You see there can be no Christmas without Good Friday and there can be no Good Fridaywithout Easter. We might go ‘over the top’ at Christmas, but perhaps the commercialism forces people to think about Our Lord, our family, our friends, our world and its problems and ourselves. I end by saying ‘Dig Deep’ into the Christmas message, my friends because it took a new-born baby in Bethlehem to turn the world upside down. May you have a joyful, fun-filled, love-— filled and blessed Christmas. God Bless. HELP NEEDED The Area Dean has received a letter from Mr Geoff Smithard in Dover regarding a charity based in Stodmarsh Lane, Canterbury helping to look after disabled children. They have recently been donated an adapted Minibus, but only have one staff member to drive it, and often have to hire drivers. They are hoping to set up a scheme of volunteer drivers to assist for 3 hours on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to enable the children to go on local trips. If you feel you can help, please Contact Mr Geoff‘ Smithard on 01304 242538 or 07968 162938 or geoff@happy2bhome.freeserve.co.uk. Thanks Sincere thanks to all the people who helped at The Auction (Nov 12th) - by giving, coming or buying. All the young Mum's were great helping in so many ways, but I would specially like to thank Jane (Martin) for all her hard work and dedication. lane's brother Alan was fantastic as the auctioneer, and he was ably helped by his wife. I can only say thank you for a wonderful happy evening. We made about £5,000.
