Life has a habit of rushing us by before we get a chance to stop and think. Lent is the time in the Christian calendar when we remember Jesus spending forty days in solitude before undertaking his public ministry. It is a time to allow us time to stop and think about ourselves our lives and our relationship with God. To be a Christian is to be in relationship with God through the link created to him through Jesus Christ. In any relationship there come times when we realise we do not fully appreciate or understand the other person in it. We may have taken that person for granted or simply assumed we knew what they liked or disliked and then to our surprise found we were totally wrong. It's the same with being a Christian, we assume what being a Christian is all about, and then we read an extract from the bible or spend time in prayer and reflection and find we have misunderstood God. This year's Lent Course will be on “Jesus Rediscovered". In an informal atmosphere I hope we can re-discover something new about the person of Jesus. This is a great opportunity for those who want to re-look at their faith, or maybe you arethinking about confirmation, or simply want to take a little time out and stop and think about themselves and God. Whatever the reason I can assure you this will be an evening (Tue's at Bridge School at 7.30pm starting on the 12”‘ Feb) to safely explore questions of faith and the identity of Jesus. If you are interested in coming along or want more information please e—mail me (vicar@bridgechurch.co.uk) or telephone 01227 830250. As this is the first post Christmas magazine, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the cards, gifts and invitations for gatherings that arrived at the Vicarage over the Christmas period. B.W. 15 Memories of Margaret Jones by Beth Richards Monday nights have been very strange for me since August. since she had become housebound Margaret and I had taken turns to phone each other between 7.00 and 7.30 m catching up on all the news until her favourite programmes Mastermin and University Challenge began. I had been very sad to see the rapid deterioration in her health and was so hopeful that hospital would bring a miraculous recovery or release from the suffering she really didn't deserve. Like all of you I am glad that she is now at peace. When I think of all she did for Bridge, all those daffodils she planted for Bridge in Bloom (what a legacy each Springtime), her years on the Parish Council and her involvement as President of the W.I. there, the thousands of pounds she raised with her coffee mornings, jams and cakes for Breast Cancer, the Samaritans, the League of Friends and other charities, I am so proud of her. No wonder she was runner up in the Lord Mayor's awards some years ago. Going to the village shops with her a year or so ago was like going on a Royal progress — everyone was so pleased to see her actually out and about — it might take ages but it did her so much ood. Home deliveries would never have the some magic. She always made gi ts of cakes for the staff at the butchers and other village shops for their kindness to her. Fiercely independ- ent there was always a "thank you" card for any good turn you did her and always in that immaculate hand—writing. Did you ever taste her Welshcakes? Everyone loved those Welshcakes of hers. She was for many years a valued committee member of the Canterbury and District Welsh Society. She never forgot her Welsh roots and the Welsh flag was always put out in the front garden on March 1st and when Wales were playing rugby. Never mind if they lost as long as they played well - especially against England! She loved her home, her garden, those pheasants who visited daily and her wonderful Geraniums. Maintaining her high standards to the end she knew she couldn't have found more helpful and understanding neighbours than Barry and Hilary, Brenda and Bert. Colin and I will never forgot how she and Marsden befriended us in 1964, all those years ago, in what was then Mrs Turner's greengrocer, when we had just arrived in Bridge with two young children and the rest, as they say, is history. Like you all, we are going to miss her very much. ‘IA FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 25 February — 9 March Pineapples, rice, honey, bananas — jusT a few of The iTems bearing The FairTrade mark To be seen regularly on our supermarkeT shelves. In a recent television documentary on methods of execution hosted by Michael Portillo, he interviewed a pro death penalty campaigner who advocated that execution free from pain was not a deterrent, this was a view shared by 15* century Roman authorities. Crucifixion was designed to be both painful and humiliating, reserved for hated criminals and for those who dared to challenge Rome's authority. In the execution of Jesus we have the most improbable happening. God in human form reaches out to the world and is rejected in the most appalling way. Vet from this appalling darkness, God's love shines through. For the disciples and the others who followed Jesus the road leading to Jerusalem and eventual death must have been a roller coaster of emotion. J esus' entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday must have been a high point with the crowds proclairnin him king. Yet these same crowds were to call for his crucifixion only days llater, the fickleness of the crowd would no doubt be recognised by many a modern day politician. What anguish must his friends have felt physically watching him being executed? The person who had been the centre of their lives and existence had died in such an excruciating way. Yet from that humiliation we have the glory of Easter Day and J esus' resurrection; light comes out of darkness. What was a hopeless situation is filled with the joy. This jo is given a real human face in the encounter on the Ernmaus Road. Two trove lers walking find themselves joined by an unknown person. His identity is only shown when he breaks bread with them. They have journeyed unwittingly with Christ. Jesus is the one who has gone beyond death to re—connect us with God. Not simply a good man or a holy man but as Christians we proclaim him Saviour, Son of God because of that first Easter Day. Wherever you are upon your journey of life this Easter, I pray that Christ will walk with you and allow is light to illuminate the path ahead. 11 I cannot close this letter without making comment on the political and tabloid hubris that came about after the Archbishop of Canterbury's recent lecture. The archbisho clearly does not need me to defend his comments but what both saddene and surprised me was the level of hostility on display to another faith community. Throu hout history people who have a different cultural or religious outlook to t at of the majority have been viewed with suspicion; This is clearly shown, even in J esus' time, in the parable of the Good Samaritan. People of Samaria were viewed with suspicion and hostility by those in the region local to Jesus. Jesus reminded those who cared to listen that the greatest commandment was to love God and love your neighbour as yourse 1‘. Christine Jenkins Club Fundraising and Marketing Officer J\l\ CANTERBURY CHORAL SOCIETY DVORAK Stabat Mater CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL SATURDAY 8th March 2008 7.30 Canterbury Choral‘ Society second concert in 2008 will be Dvorak Stabat Mater conducted by Richard Cooke. Dvorak was born in 1841 in Prague (then part of the Austrian Empire) His musical talent was reco nised at an early age and he became an accomplished player of the violin an viola. He played the viola in the Provisional Theatre Orchestra which at that time was conducted by Smetana. Possibly his most popular work is his Symphony No 9 "From the New World". Stabat Mater was inspired as a result of personal tragedy. Dvorak lost 3 of his living children and as such the piece is one of mourning and also of healing. Stabat Mater is based on a Roman Catholic poem which tells of the Virgin Mary's grief over the crucifixion of Jesus as she is standing under his cross. After the piece's December 1880 premiere, the response in England was so great that Dvorak was invited to conduct it here and thus started his rise to fame in the English speaking world. The Stabat Mater has been ut to music by many com osers over the years, but this particular one is fille with Dvorak's religious aith and some of it cannot help but rub off on the listener. A truly unique Stabat Mater, with its original musical phrases and filled with the romantic settings of its time, still comes across as one of the most personal settings ever and provides an inspiring, though at times, a painful personal statement of faith and hope. soloists for the evening will be Sophie Bevan, Wendy Dawn Thompson, Justin Lavender and Michael Pearce. Tickets for Dvorak Stabat Mater can be purchased from the Canterbury Bookings on 01227 378188 or by email on boxoffice@canterbury.gov.uk. Full information about the Society including ways to join can be found on their website wwwcanterburychoral.co.uk. 21 Patrixbourne with Bridge PCC Invite you to a Concert by the Kent Police Band 7.00pm Saturday 26th April 2008 Bridge & Patrixbourne C.E.P. As this area was wit in t e parish of Bekesbourne WI'l'l'l Patrixbourne it was agreed to approach that ‘parish to ask them to support Br-idge‘s request to the cit council for anti- ly tipping measures and for the installation of a lidde bin at the recycling point. Village hall - Cllr Gulvin briefed the parish council on the plans for renovatin the ground floor of the village hall. Additional storage space would be create , the itchen would be improved and disabled toilets that met the disabled status re uirements installed. Plannin permission had been ap lied for and it was hoped that work would begin in t e summer. Funding had een requested and the cost was estimated to e about £31,000. Youth Shelter — A grant of £5,000 had been awarded by KCC towards the cost of the Youth Shelter. The council agreed to make up the additional £1,745 to pay for the shelter and solar lighting. ‘"5"! i ea evelo e Co sultation -— It was decided to write to Canterbury City Council pointing out that the present proposals were unlikely to relieve con estion in the area. There was concern a out the plan to surround the new roa with 1,300 houses. This would create further congestion as well as being an unsuitable environment for new housing. There was also concern about the height of the buildings being prorposed, which were significantly taller than the rest of Canterbury's buildings. raffic management plans were vague. Cycle Roifie to Dover - It was a reed to write to Kent Highways Authority suggesting that the cycle route to over should go through Bridge rather than along the A2. This would be a much safer alternative to the present route 16. Welcome Packs for New Residents - Havin considered the examples of Welcome Packs from other parishes supplied y Action for Communities in Rural Kent, it was agreed that the current packs being distributed by the parish council were satisfactory. It was therefore agreed the parish council could not justify funding from ACRK to improve them. Life has a habit of not always going to plan. We often have mapped out before us hopes, aspirations and dreams for the future. Then almost overnight a situation can occur which forces us to dramatically reconsider our 0 tions. The -Disciples on~6ood Friday must have been extremely despondent. W ilst Jesus waswith them all seemed to be going to plan and if they were unsure he was on hand to give them direction. But in a very short period of time he had been arrested and executed. All the plans had to be re—considered. Yet in the darkness of Good Friday hope emerges on Easter Day, the unthinkable has happened Jesus has overcome death and has returned. He appears to the disciples and others and at Pentecost the disciples or in another sense the church is commissioned to go out and spread the good news of Jesus, plans are remade hope is restored and a new day beckons. That may all seem well and good but I am sometimes asked why God has let something not go according to plan. I have often asked the some of myself in my prayers. Often the answer is that our plans are based upon human desire and human values rather than on the way God would want us to live our lives. Such a way is not to be seen as a straight jacket or a life devoid of enjoyment. But it is a way of living life that not only takes account of ourselves but of the world around us. The good news of Pentecost is the disciples are commissioned to bring hope to the world. Their life plans are based upon the hope of the resurrected Christ. If we look at our own plans for the future are they only about what we want, or are they about bringing hope for the future and take into account other people, community and bringing a sense of race into our lives. As we make our plans for the future reflect upon the worgs of the Lord's Prayer, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven". Look forward with hofpe and have Christ's love in your hearts and may you find peace and joy in the uture. Yours in Christ Simon 11 ‘/our Parish Matters Bapjji [[1 17/02 Bekesbourne Grace Florence Robinson The Vicar will be having his ‘Day Off‘ on a Friday each week. The birds are singing and the hopes of Spring and Summer give us a new lease of life, especially at this Easter-tide, which never actually stops because we are Easter people. y Very soon on May 15‘, Ascension Day, it will be the end of the Great 40 days, when the Risen Christ appeared to his disciples, and He will return to heaven, in Glory. But it doesn’t end there because ten days later it will be Pentecost, Whitsunday, when Jesus sent his Holy Spirit to the disciples. From that moment the frightened men became strong and feared nothing, standing up for Our Lord, whatever the outcome, and it meant death to many of them. After Pentecost it is Trinity when the church teaches us that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I end with a story, I think it is from a play by Dorothy Sayers. It tells of Pilate’s wife talking to the Roman Centurion. He approaches her and she asks if Jesus is dead. He hesitates and mumbles that he does not know. She repeats herself, “Speak up man is Jesus of Nazareth dead?” “I'm not sure, Ma'am." “What on earth do you mean?” ‘‘I don't think He’s dead, Ma’am; I think He is let loose in the world.” Our Lord Jesus Christ is let loose in the world. He is strong 11 and powerful and its up to us to stand up for Him and to worship Him, our GOD and we know He will strengthen us with HIS HOLY SPIRIT. Have a hopeful and happy May! God Bless Margaret Simon, Gail and Josh would like to thank everyone for the prayers, cards and care shown to us all following the sudden death of Simon’s father. This was from 32 boxes, which are emptied once a year, or if full, it can be sooner. In addition, £53.26 was given in donations. Thank you to all who made this possible, and it is surprising how much the small coins mount up to become £’s. More boxes have been requested, if interested please contact- Kathy Eynon, 19 Bridge Down, Bridge Tel. (01227) 830466 16 , CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 0 11 -17 MAY 2003 A glass of fresh water in Kayabunia, Bangladesh, is precious, where climate change means rising sea water levels are making fresh water salty and dangerous to drink. But with the support of Christian Aid’s partner, BCAS, water councils have been set up and villagers are being trained to harvest rainwater, providing their community with a fresh water supply. Simple maybe, but a matter of life or death for the people of Kayabunia. Support like this is funded by the money collected each year during Christian Aid Week and thousands of people across the world are helped out of poverty by the efforts of collectors and the generosity of those who give. In our area we are a small but vital part of that effort and last year we raised nearly £1600 by the hard work and generosity of local people. Will you help us to do even better in 2008? More collectors would help us to get round to more houses, or maybe you could shake a collecting tin in Canterbury for an hour on Saturday 17 May? If you can help by in any way, please contact Jean Barber on 831956. Please give generously when that red envelope comes through your letter box. You will be changing lives in countries like Bangladesh for ever. Thank you. Nailbourne Horticultural Society -Spring Show. Bravely the Horticultural Society held their Annual Spring Show on Tuesday 1 April. It was however no "April Fool". The verdict of the judges, Mr and Mrs Sudell, on the show as a whole was "very enjoyable" and they remarked especially on the large number and high standard of the entries in the class for miniatures. For those who like a bit of detail, there were more than 120 exhibits. Two cups are presented at the Spring Show; the one for the "Best Bloom in Show" was won this year by Una Smith and the cup for "Best Flowering Pot Plant" went to Audrey Kolhoff. The hall looked very spring-like and cheerful with the long tables filled with exhibits and it was encouraging and pleasing to see a large number of exhibitors as well as villagers who had popped in to view the show. The committee would like to thank everyone who exhibited or came along to enjoy this long established village event. The next event on this year's programme is an illustrated talk, with practical advice, on "Ponds and Water Gardens" by Janet Bryant. This has been rescheduled from last year because the speaker was ill and will be held on Thursday 1 May at 7.30pm in Bridge Village Hall. As always, members and non»- members are most welcome. At the end of March a Coffee Morning was held in the church to ‘showcase’ the new additions and it was good that so many people came along to see the finished work. The sum of £200 was raised, which will enable us to purchase some of the items required to add the finishing touches to the project. We are very grateful for all the financial support received; without it our dreams would not have been realised. It is now time to turn our attention to our other Parish Church, St Mary’s Patrixbourne. The church suffered the theft of some copper window grills in early summer last year, including from a window that contains one of the treasures of the church, the Swiss enamelled glass. The grills have been replaced on two windows, but a temporary repair of polycarbonate sheeting has been used to protect the Swiss glass panels. Shortly after the theft, a small hole appeared in a panel of Swiss glass in another window, and inspection of the windows by the Cathedral Stained Glass Studios, found this was due to the glue of a previous repair falling from old age. Other signs of further damage and deterioration were also present. The windows therefore need urgent work to restore them, and to give them additional protection from weather and possible vandalism. The estimated cost of the work is £27000, and we need grants and financial support to carry this out. Last autumn, the Architect’s Quinquennial Inspection at St Mary’s revealed that we have an estimated £30,000 of work to do the fabric of the church. We will be applying for grants and asking for donations to cover this necessary work. This needs to be carried out before we can contemplate redecoration and new furnishings throughout the interior of the church. Major fundraising for both projects at St. Mary’s will be announced in due course, but to date, grants of £6,500 have been promised towards the work on the windows. For the most part science and technology has tamed the natural world whether in terms of medicine fighting disease or technology allowing us to travel, communicate and work. Yet in the midst of ordered and controlled lives the force of nature can remind us of how little real control we have. All of us I am sure have been deeply moved by the plight of those affected in Burma and China as they struggle to rebuild broken lives and communities. in today's modern world of communication, a month on when this magazine goes to print I wonder how much coverage these two stories will be receiving. As our world grows ever smaller due to technological advances we know more now about our neighbour in need around the world than ever before. Such knowledge is to be welcomed but some say this leads us to grow weary over giving to those in need. I would want to respond by saying it rather highlights just how much we have and how grateful we shouid be. Yes I recognise that our economy is suffering but we are all well fed, have good health care, education and in comparison to the rest of the world a good standard of living. Into this discussion Christians are reminded that Jesus told his disciples that the greatest commandment was to love God and your neighbour as yourself. As Christians we are witnesses to God’s love not simply by what we say but how we act. To love God is to love your neighbour; Jesus was explaining that one could not be separated from the other. Early Christian communities were noted for their hospitality and care. As a church community let us thank God for all the good that we have and respond in kind. Let us as members of a wider secular society all work together for the common good. FORTHCOMING EVENTS Saturday 19th July - Boot Fare Sunday 10th August - Boulles Tournament Friday 19th September - Autumn Auction and Harvest Supper 14 Thanksgiving Service for Elizabeth Giles, I want to thank all those from the Bridge district who attended the service for Elizabeth on Saturday 26th April at SS Peter 61 Paul Parish Church, Charlton-in-Dover. For those who -were not there, here is a short account of the event. A large congregation was gathered from all over the country. It was certainly just as well that Bridge Church had been ruled out from the start as bein too small. If the service had been held here. half the congregation would ave been left standing outside in the churchyard. Some of them might well have been those who had travelled from Yorkshire or Cheshire to be present. The service was conducted by Fr Colin Johnson. Parish Priest of Charlton, with just the right degree of flowing formality, yet with an underlying ease. I was particularly grateful that our own vicar, the Reverend Simon Rowlands, felt able to attend and take an active part at a time of personal bereavement. It was gratifying, too. that Canon Fr Bruce Sharpe, a family friend of ours from Ely days, was able to attend and contribute valuably. It was a wonderful occasion. The music and those who offered it—the chamber choir (Lees Court Music, plus visitors, directed by Chris Price: the or anist (Robert Green, former assistant organist at Lichfield and Herefor cathedrals): and my quintet Quodlibet--were top—rate, as were me carefully chosen readings and readers. Thea Carr's contribution, a spoken extract from The Dream of Geromtius was outstanding. I had designed a comprehensive A4—sized booklet that contained the whole service, in detail, texts and all; so everyone had everything they needed under one cover. Our son Simon's sculptural work in memory of his mother was placed on a plinth at the front to the left of the nave altar: and a collage From Jess, our stricken (but sli htly improved) granddaughter, lay at 45 degrees on the altar steps. A particu arly inspiring light came in from the lofty windows high in the vault and illuminated sculpture, collage — and indeed radiated the whole church interior beautifully. The day was sunny and warm, which was just right for the dedication of a small, already flowering tree in Elizabeth's memory. It is planted in the garden near the porch. After the service, many of us came back to the White Horse. Brid e, for joyful jazz (always one of Elizabeth's wishes for an occasion we both t ought could only be many years ahead), and a large group stayed for supper later. Countless superlatives from those present on the occasion have f lowed in since the 26th. Thank you to those who wrote expressing disappointment that they could not be there, and thank you again to those who helped make it such a marvellous day. Elizabeth would have enjoyed it-—-and I am sure she did! Peter Giles ‘IE FRIENDS OF B_EKESBOURNE CHURCH ROGATIOILJ l_f1AL|§, SUNDAY 27 April 2008 There was a good turn out for this annual event with 24 walkers and 5 Dogs taking part in the walk around the boundaries of the Village on a fine Sunday Morning. But it would not have come about were it not for Bridge Parish Council agreeing to the club using the Recreation Ground and Pavilion for." many of their matches, not least the First team who have led the wayin the revival. The club's Chairman, Phil Knight, said‘. “When we came to an arrangement with the Parish.-Council, we undertook to renovate the Pavilion and maintain the pitch, which we have done. We also made a commitment to do everything possible to; cause little disturbance to nearby residents. We are glad to say that for almost the entire season there have been very few complaints. We had thought that car parking might be a problem. I trust that nobody has been inconvenienced. "Only on one occasion have residents had serious cause to complain, and that was largely because of the behaviour of visiting su porters to a match involving young players. We regret the incident but are elighted that so many village residents have come along to matches and told us how pleased they are to see the "recreation ground being used for its proper purpose - rather than for golf practice"! When the club began the season officials were hopeful of success for the First team, but it was by no means a foregone conclusion. In the event, the side has excelled, comfortably winning the British Energy Kent County League (Division II East) with only one defeat, which was not at Brid e! More than 100 goals were scored. The First team also won their section 0 the Kent Junior Cup. Surprisingly, home attendances have reached 160, which may not sound a lot but compare favourably with much more senior clubs in the county. The club's Ladies team began the season with several members who had never played organised football before yet they remained unbeaten in lea ue ames to win promotion. All eight teams (men, ladies, youths and chil ren that represented the City did so with spirit and a sense of sportsmanship that has been instilled from the start. There will always be the occasional lapse. After all....it's football l With the permission of Brid e Parish Council and continuing support of the residents, the club earnestly opes to remain playing at Bridge for many years to come. Next season the First team will remain. After that it could be that the Recreation Ground will be used by the Reserves and/or the Ladies. Whatever happens, Mr Knight says: “We will never forget how much we owe to the people of Bridge for accepting us when we were a club without a home. In future years we hope to have a stadium of our own in the city but we would be delightedif Bridge could host other sides from within the club for the long term". Johannes Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany in 1685 and died in Leipzig in 1750. Bach was the youngest son of Johann Bach, a town musician, from whom he learnt the violin and rudiments of musical theory. When he was ten he was orphaned and went to live with his elder brother who gave him lessons in keyboard playing. In his mid thirties, his wife and mother of seven children died (three of their children had already died). Only six of the thirteen progeny of his second marriage would live to adulthood This man of few words said practically nothing about himself or his feelings. Yet his music says it all, for w ile we sometimes hear in it sadness, we hear more often great joy. humour, and zest for life We also hear the heartbeat of one possessed of profound reverence and devotion-nowhere is this reverence more evident than in his M_ass in B minor. The Mass in B Minor consists of 'parodies' or arrangements of ear:-lier’music. This does not suggest that the value is diminished but rather to underline an aspect of Bach's genius, his ability to transform music written for one purpose into something so perfect in its new setting that the listener findsit difficult to believe that it could have been written for anything else. ' Soloists for the concert will be Julia Doyle, soprano, David Allsopp, counter- tenor, Benjamin Hulett, tenor and Benjamin Bevan, bass. 8 Tickets for Bach Mass in B Minor can be purchased from the Canterbury Bookings on 01227 378188 or by email on boxoffice@canterbury.gov.uk. Full information about the Society including ways to join can be found on their website wwwcanterburychoral.co.uk. 25 . _Bridge Parish Council www.bridgevi||age.org.uk Notes from Bridgg Parish Council meetigjfl May 200; Before thegmeeting Kent County Councillor Michael Northey formally declared The new youth shelter on the recreation ground open. Youth Group -— Cllr Esdale reported that the Youth Group Committee had reluctantly-;decided To close the group with immediate effect as it was no longer sustainable given the low numbers attending, neither was it fulfilling a social service to the village any longer. The city council youth worker had been informed and the city council had been given a month's notice of termination of the coiijtract to provide youth services to Bridge. The parish council recorded its thanks to the committee and volunteers who had-helped to keep The youth group going over the years. Bridge in Bloom - It was agreed that the Bridge in Bloom competition would take place in June. Cllr Esdale would publicise it on the website and Cllr Edmonds would organise the competition. Judging will take place in late J uly/early August. Bridge Place Country Club Licence Application A number of local residents spoke against this application. Concern was expressed about the noise and disruption that would be experienced late into the night by the whole village if a licence to sell alcohol and for music and dancing was allowed until 2.00am on Fridaysand Saturdays and until midnight on weekdays. Residents recalled the previous disturbances and damage caused in the village when the country club was operating and commented on the attractive appearance of the High Street now that planters and flower boxes were no longer in danger of vandalism from patrons of the club leaving the village in the early hours. It was pointed out that the club's proprietor had himself objected last May to the proposed extended opening hours of the Red Lion, claiming they were inappropriate for a rural village. Residents were warned that, once granted, the licence‘ would apply permanently regardless of the nature of the club. It was suggested that the Country Club should have the same licencing hours as other public houses in Bridge and that there was no local demand for the extended -hours. The parish council agreed to write to the City Council Licencing Authorities opposing the application and urged residents to write to the authority before the deadline of 28*“ May, copying their letters to the parish council. Allotments - Cllr Gulvin explained that there was now a fairly static number of allotment holders but a waiting list of 5 local residents and 3 others from outside the village. It was therefore agreed to ask Cantley Estates to consider extending the allotment area on the south side to provide 4 further full sized plots. ' Audited Accounts for 2007-8 The audited accounts for 2007-8 were agreed and signed by the Chairman and the Clerk as Responsible Financial Officer. It was agreed to reappoint Kevin Funnell as internal auditor and to ‘ask him to carry out the half yearly audit in October. Reserves for 2008-9 Cllr Esdale gave details of the proposed reserves for 2008-9 and they were agreed by the parish council. The Annual Parish Meeting will be held in the village hall on Thursday 15"‘. May at 7.30pm. All Bridge residents are welcome to attend. The next meeting of Bridge Parish Council will be on Thursday 12”‘. June 2008 at 7.30pm in Bridge Village Hall. Office: 01227 830250 07730672 274 Vicar@BridgeChurch.co.uk www. bridgechurch.co.uk Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan as a reminder of what it is to live in community, in response to the question who is my neighbour? ln today’s modern world many people have little or no contact with their neighbours. Yet to live in a community is to share in each others joy and sadness. The village church was once the main focus of community, where people gathered to celebrate marriage, the thanksgiving of new life at baptism and a place to come together to say goodbye to loved ones for funeral services. Community is important for it is a place where people can come together and support and care for each other. The village fete this year was an excellent example of a shared celebration. Yet on a smaller level such communities meet on a regular basis, at the allotments, art club, yoga, playgroup and the Fish scheme to name but a small number of the many groups who meet in the village. All contribute to supporting individual members but also fit into the bigger picture in the life of the village. St Peter’s Church at Bridge is no different being made up of many parts, our traditional 8am service at one end of the spectrum and the youth group Moby at the other. Each congregation or group is of equal importance to the daily life of the church and wider community. The diversity of any such community is part of its strength. Returning to the parable of the Good Samaritan, the injured person was helped by someone from a completely different religious and ethnic group than himself. Jesus taught his followers to love their neighbour as themselves no matter how different that person is to you. it was as difficult a commandment then as now but if we are to live in community it is something we must all attempt to achieve. Jesus it seems understood the need to have time for prayer to care for body and soul. The importance of this in today’s busy world should not be underestimated. We are in constant contact with the world around us with TV, mobile phones and the internet_ Do we ever simply stop and seek time with God to allow ourselves space to reflect on who we are and where we are going? Jesus following the death of John the Baptist takes himself to a mountainside to pray. He finds solitude and following this time of prayer crosses over to the other side of the lake away from the crowds. Are you taking time to cross to a place of quiet to be with friends and stop? It doesn’t need to be a faraway shore, my two spiritual directors Tizzy the Lurcher and a rather noisy but loving Border Terrier ldris would happily tell you if they could that Bridge is surrounded by the most beautiful countryside, a place to be still in a busy world (with the mobile switched off). The Psalmist reminds us to “be still and know that I am God”. How often looking at a beautiful landscape are we moved to stop and wonder at Gods creation? l hope all of you where ever this summer may take you have the opportunity to stop and be still. May you find in that stillness and silence the refreshing and enriching presence of God. Every blessing Simon 1? I am currently helping a friend who is developing a therapeutic garden particularly for those with any visual impairment at the Kent Association for the Blind in London Road. Although she has managed to secure some grants to help this work, we are very keen to recycle as much as possible. We are hoping to be able to make Teaching beds to enable those with difficulties to experiment with growing and harvestin produce. Also in development are borders which require some sensory panting (not necessarily scented as apparently this confuses the guide dogs!!!) and a water feature. If you have any unwanted tools or you have plants which you can spare when you are dividing this autumn I can make use of these in the garden. Any tools or plants can be dropped off at The Vicarage. Thank you. LighT iT seems is in shorT supply. YeT as you walk along your village sTreeT or lane in The evening, lighT shines ouT from individual homes defying The ToTa| cloak of nighT. ChrisTians idenTify wiTh The figure of Jesus as The lighT of The world. In John's Gospel we hear Jesus proclaimed as The way The TruTh and The lighT. In These dark financial Times when The cerTainTy of The economic world has Taken a severe knock and people feel less aT ease wifh Their own personal siTuaTion; fai'Th in God can seem aTTracTive. CerTain|y Chrisfians would wanT To affirm Their faiTh buT also acknowledge Their own human vulnerabiliTy, being The same as Those of our neighbours who share oTher faiTh TradiTions or have no religious affiliaTion. Times or seasons can bring a sense of being ill aT ease wiTh The world around abouT us. BUT as a Chrisfian I find ThaT aT such difficulT Times prayer, experiencing Time wiTh God can be of real benefiT. IT is an acknowledgemerrr ThaT we are noT on our own. The presence of God's love is There wiTh us in The presenT moment Some people aT Troubled Times in Their lives find siTTing in church is helpful buT find iT difficulT To find a way inTo prayer. AT Bridge Church we have recenTly inTroduced a place where a candle can be liT, iT acTs as a focus for our ThoughTs as we offer Them To God. Maybe as we remember The memory of a person we miss, or Think abouT an issue ThaT unseTT|es us, whaTever we have To offer To God, idenTifying H and leTTing iT go can be of a real help. The flickering lighT of The candle dispelling The darkness, a reminder of The hope we have in ChrisT To Transform The seemingly dark world around us. Christians celebrate Christmas because of the birth of Christ over 2000 years ago. But why celebrate this fact right around the world? Well, we believe Christ is God's son, Jesus was not only a human child having come into the world through a natural human birth but being fully human was also God incarnate. Sent by God to re-connect God with his people, it is God who makes the first move at Christmas. He sends his Son, not because we ask for such an act or because we deserve such a gift but out of an act of un-conditional love. This gift of love echoes down the ages as freshly as that first Christmas. God acts out of love to all humanity, we might choose to forget or ignore God, but he will not forget or ignore us. His love for us is revealed in the birth of his Son. Each and every year at Christmas, Christians the world over celebrate this unique act of love. if this Christmas you feel inundated by the over commercialisation of the season, or down hearted because of the economic conditions, the real meaning of Christmas remains unchanged. In Jesus, God is made man for all humanity, offered to all and free. if that means anything to you, if you believe in this child called Jesus Christ, please come and join the celebration... Where we proclaim Christ is born today. Every blessing to you and your families this Christmas and a very peaceful new year. It was good to see so many of my Bridge friends when Susan and I came in October. We were especially pleased to see the transformation in St. Peter's, Bridge. Congratulations to all those who have in any way contributed to this wonderful effort. I hope many future generations of parishioners of all ages will benefit from the possibilities offered by this much—|oved ancient church. Perhaps we shall be able to have another visit in 2009. It is always a joy to welcome any of you here if you happen to be in the Blackheath area. With my continuing prayers for you all. Muriel Packer Raj and Ra jini Dasan wish their friends in Bridge and beyond a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy New Year. 18 Changes at the back of St Peter's. Bridge A number of people have asked where The money come from for the new loo and preparation area at the back of the church. Virador, the waste management company, gave us a substantial grant which comes from the Government Landfill Tax, so although we all try to avoid filling the landfill bin, some good comes of it. Kent County Councillor Michael Northey gave us a large proportion of his discretionary fund and put us in the way of a substantial KCC Local Community Grant. Very welcome ! Marshall's Charity was founded in The 17*“ century by a baker in Southork who bought land in and around London. When he died he formed a trust “to further Christian teaching". As London expanded the land was built on and the rents produce income. The trust now gives grants of EIM each year to churches in Kent Surrey and Li ncolnshire, some of it to us. We got a grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation which gets funds from Weston‘s biscuits -— so keep on eating those Ryvitasl Another source was the Beatrice Laing trust which was set up by John Laing (later Sir) a stonemason from Cumbria, who came south in the 19th century and set up one of the largest contractors in the country. Godinton Charitable Trust was set up by a post owner of‘Godinton House, Ashford, and gives discretionary grants to deserving causes, of which we were one. Bridge Parish Council, the Dean and Chapter and the All churches Fund supported us. The Flower Festival and a concert also produced much needed funds. The remainder came from very active support from churchgoers and non— churchgoers in Bridge and around. We thank all who have contributed to pay for these alterations which have opened up new opportunities for our church and the village, and would have been impossible without this support. Many thanks to everyone who supported our own Bridge Tea Party in September - all who supplied cakes and all who gave so generously. We raised an excellent total of £126. The Annual Review ‘Let it Grow’, giving details of all Christian Aid's work during 2007/8, is well worth reading and a copy is available at the back of Bridge Church. Jean Barber (01227 831956) 21 The Late Lack Hopkins A large congregation attended the memorial service for Jack Hopkins. Jack was known to so many of us, as he had lived with his family both in Bishopsbourne and Bridge all his life. For many years he was Church Verger, at St. Peter's and he would be seen in all weathers, walking Through the park to unlock in the early mornings and for services, in plenty of time to ring the hell or coming to have a tidy and a sweep up around the Churchyard. Several people had his help with their gardens and shopping. He was always cheerful and loved all things to do wish The countryside and nature, but most Ef all he loved his Church and singing the hymns of which he knew many off by eart. Over The last few years he lived in Saxon Lodge, but he could still be seen gettin about, and in Church on Sunday morning‘, where, if possible, he would take t e collection and enjoy the service which e knew so well. §alvation Army Carol Concert This will take place on Monday 1st December at 7.30pm in the School Hall.
