They also thought he would fight for them as their King. This was true, he was their King, but he was the King of Kings of the World, and his Kingdom was one of love, mercy and truth. As he said at his trial, “My Kingdom is not of this World”. Jesus Christ, Son of God came for the whole world, but so many did not recognise him. He was, and is the True Light which enlightens everyone. The darkness in the world did not overcome it, and never will. As Isaiah said, “Arise, shine, for your Light has come, and the Glory ofthe Lord is risen upon you”. As Christmas, there were so many lights in homes, in the gardens and in the streets, with candles in the churches. It was very beautiful. I loved the glow, but many are now extinguished. Has routine and normality returned? No! Far from it. I think this poem helps us to realise and understand why. When the song ofthe angels is stilled, When the star in the sky has gone, When the Kings and Princes have returned, When the Shepherds are back home with their flocks, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, The heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild nations, To bring peace among people, To make music in the heart. Howard Thurman All too often, we say things will come right and work out, but as Christs lights, we must do our part, however small. Soon we will be celebrating Candlemas, on February 2nd, when we remember the Presentation of Christ in the temple. Then, the season of Lent begins, which starts on Ash Wednesday, March 2nd, when there will be a service at St Peters, Bridge at 7pm, with the imposition of Ashes. Lent is a solemn season, when we try to give up something, or do more to help others. You alone can decide — discipline is involved, and that’s not easy!! Nether the less, have a Lent of Light, ending on Easter Day, with Light and Life, because Christ is Risen! He is risen indeed, Alleluia! Margaret. St Peter's Church. Bridde Firstly we wish to thank the team of Flower Arrangers, under the guidance of Viv Brazier, on the wonderful flower arrangements and decorations in St Peter’s Church over Christmas. A lot of people came into Church overthe Christmas period and commented on the lovely tree in the entrance and the floral displays. This is not only a thank you for making the Church look welcoming over Christmas, all through the yearthis silent band of women come in and arrange their floral displays, St Peter’s would look very bare and unloved without their efforts. Thank you all. Christmas was a busy time for us, with 330 attending the two Christingle services, we know these services are popular and thank all who support them each year. We collected £410.00 for the Children’s Society, an amazing amount. Midnight Mass is always a lovely service and 45 came this year. Our Carol Service, organised by one of our organists Martin Miles, was a combination of readings and both new and traditional carols, afterthe service refreshments of wine and mince pies were enjoyed by all. Fundraising — To date we have raised £60,000 towards the urgent work needed at St Peter's (in total we need £90,000). We have received some generous donations from parishioners and we have been fortunate to secure £32,000 in our grant applications, these do take time and effort to do and we are still pursuing other Trusts. In tandem with this we now have a very active Friends Group (FOSP) who raised £4,000 with various events including concerts, talks and plays over the past 18 months. The next event is on Saturday 19th February when local girl Bettina Walker will be singing with her group ‘Prophecy’ in Bridge Church at 3pm, more details elsewhere in this magazine. Please keep an eye out for our fundraising events, they are quite diverse and bring in a lot of parishioners who do not attend Church but love the music/atmosphere of events in the lovely building we have. We are conscious that not everyone reads On the Nail, we are therefore advertising our events on Face Book, in the village news column in the Kentish Gazette and of course with Posters around the village. Ourthanks go to Margaret and Reg Humphriss who are both working closely with us during our lnterregnum, along with a number of retired Clergy. As yet we have no news on the likelihood of a new Vicar in the foreseeable future but we will keep you posted. Thanks to everyone fortheir support during the lnterregnum, we really do appreciate it. There is still quite a way to go,(we need to raise £90,000 to carry out all the works needed), which leads me to our programme of events. COFFEE, CAKE AND CONCERT was launched at St Peters Bridge with a Carol Concert presented by the Friends group for the church and attracted an audience of 45 people. Feedback about this venture included — “it was a nice social occasion, we enjoyed singing and the idea is worth repeating”. So a second helping was served on Saturday 21 January when our own Bettina Walker sang a selection of her favourite songs (some with audience participation) and raised £193.00. Her mini concert is a taster for the concert being given by “Prophecy” (in which she's a lead singer) on Sunday 19 February at 3pm. Definitely a date for your diary! Georgie Bainbridge Chair, Friends of St Peter's Church St Peter’s Bridde Services Survev We recently distributed a questionnaire to our Parishioners and the general feedback was pleasing. We have taken on board a number of ideas, one of which was the timings of services. We have, therefore, decided to do a 6 month trial of changing the 11am Eucharist on the second Sunday of each month to a 9.30am start, this will start in February and the content ofthe service will remain the same. Our fourth Sunday is the time we get together for Community Worship, this is led by Bev Latham (Authorised Lay Minister) helped by Margaret and Reg when needed. It would be lovely to see some children come along and if willing help in the service, do you have a group of friends who would like to sing or act, let us know on 01227 830668 or 830960. I’m writing this while it nd warm baking bread — you can do it Innamon oils 1/3 pint/just over 6 fl oz/180ml milk 2oz/55g butter 14oz/400g strong plain flour (bread flour) 1 sachet dried quick yeast (7g/1tsp) 2oz/55g caster sugar % tsp salt 4 tbsps/60ml water at room temperature/slightly warmed 1 egg, beaten 7 % oz/220g muscovado sugar 1 tablespoon cinnamon 4oz/110g softened butter to glaze: 2tbsp milk and water, 3 tbsp caster sugar In a small saucepan, warm the milk until it isjust bubbling slightly, then add the butter. Stir and allow it to cool to lukewarm (if necessary, put it outside). Now take a large mixing bowl, put 8 % oz (250g) ofthe flour, adding the yeast, sugar and salt. Mix this together, then add the water, egg and milk mixture. Beat this well, then add the last ofthe flour, stirring it all together until you have a dough. Finally, turn it out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5 minutes to make the dough elastic. Put your dough back into the bowl, cover with a cloth and leave it to rest for 10 minutes. In a small bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon and butter so you have a gritty paste. Turn the dough out again, and alternately roll and pull it into a rectangle at least 12" x 9" (30 x 23cm). Cover it with the sugar/butter mixture, using a round bladed knife to get the paste evenly all over the surface (this is surprisingly time-consumingl). From the long side, roll the dough away from you, tucking the first curl in very tightly. Pinch the edge to seal it (or use a bit of water to moisten the dough) and sit the roll on the edge. Now cut into a minimum of 12 pieces — I went for more so I had flatter rolls, approx. 16 or so. Turn the oven on to 190 deg C To save on the washing up, I put the rolls on baking parchment, not so far apart that they were isolated, nor so close together they fused (about 6 to a baking tray, depending on your trays). Cover with greased cling film and leave to rise in a warm place (overthe cooker) until they have doubled in size. In a small pan, mix the milk/water and sugar. Heat gently together and leave this to cool. Bake for about 15-20 minutes until light golden brown and firm to the touch. When you take them out, glaze the buns with the milk and water mix. For best results, do this twice, then leave them to cool.... if you can resist them for that long! Best eaten warm. # Patchwork 15th March Make a Mug Rug, learn the basic patchwork quilt techniques. As time went on ,early Christians found this a useful discipline, a time for spiritual spring cleaning of lives and deepening of faith. Your local churches are here to welcome you and for you to use. Thank you to all who work hard to keep them open and so attractive. Among our special activities this Lent look out for the Christian Aid lunches and maybe you would like to read a Christian book. In the last two or three years the outstanding series of Holy Week Cathedral Lectures by Rowan Williams have been published and are on sale in the Cathedral shop. Look out for the most recent one, an absolute gem,( a small book of a hundred pages ,£8.99) GOD WITH US-The message ofthe cross and resurrection .Then and now. SPCK. Look fon/vard to the Bishop of Dover leading worship during Holy Week and Easter in our different churches. Retiring again. Since 2001 when my wife and I retired to Lower Hardres, I have enjoyed a continuing ministry and been pleased to help out in our local churches, the Cathedral and other churches including assisting with the Anglican Chaplaincy in the Pas de Calais where we had a holiday home until last October. This is in addition to being involved with an active spiritual accompaniment programme and other works. Now that I am just over eighty my children have been prompting me to take life steadier and I have known the time was coming ,so with regret ,I informed the Churchwardens that I was again ‘retiring ' at the end of February. I had been hoping to see in a lively and loving new Vicar settle in and then gracefully retire but that seems to be taking time. Thank you for letting me help over the years .I have become very fond of you and admired the way you support the five churches in our Benefice and get the local community involved in that work. I also appreciate that it is not always easy to keep the day to day running expenses going. I believe that as many people as possible need to support our local churches, even if you go elsewhere or maybe at the moment nowhere. Do look after Margaret ,our Reader, share out jobs and continue to welcome the retired clergy who come in and are pleased to help. It is good that we have such a full rota. May God bless you all. Many of us living in Bekesbourne, Bridge, Patrixbourne, Lower Hardres and Nackington or nearby, and connected with their churches will recall that in 2012 we had both a vicar and a curate. As a reminder to us, and to inform those living elsewhere, our vicar was Rev Simon Rowlands and our curate was Rev Julia Baldwin. 2013 was a year of change. In January Simon moved to Faversham and in November Julia became Chaplain to the Bishop of Dover. Then, as now, we were in Interregnum. This January it was announced that Julia has been appointed Chaplain to Brasenose College, Oxford, starting in September. Alan Barber, one of our PCC secretaries, sent our congratulations and asked whether she might come and talk about her experiences in Canterbury and hopes for the future. Julia replied ‘‘I would be delighted to come to the Benefice and give a talk — it would be a lovely opportunity to see you all again.” So Julia’s free talk will take place in Bridge Church on Sunday 19 March at 3pm followed by tea and cakes. There will be a retiring collection for the Mission Aviation Fellowship. Bridge with Patrixbourne Women's Institute On Tuesday 21 March at 7.30 pm in Bridge Village Hall, Mike Bundock makes a return to Bridge (he previously gave an interesting talk to the Horticultural Society on Floral Clocks) but this time his subject will be "The Rise of Kent Seaside Resorts". A visit to the vets can be a difficult and challenging experience for cats and their owners.Cats are strongly territorial animals and this means that while they are generally happy and confident in their own territory (ie. at home), as soon as they are taken outside of this familiar environment they can become highly stressed and find the experience very frightening. The whole process of taking a cat to the vets can be very stressful, from simply catching a cat to put it in a basket, through transporting the cat in the car, Waiting in the waiting room alongside dogs, being examined and sometimes having to be hospitalised. Our new Cat-Only Clinic has been designed with only cats in mind as cats should be approached in a very different way to dogs. We aim to minimise their stress during handling, examinations and procedures and ensure cats are handled with appropriate gentleness and respect at all times. Times when they feel low or when their troubles seem overwhelming, times of despair. Talking helps. Samaritans are here around the clock, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You don't have to be suicidal to call us. Of course, we aim for everyone to get through to someone straight away, but we can't always guarantee that as it depends on the number of volunteers we have on the phones at that time. But most calls are answered first time. Phone us on 116 123 (this number is free to call), email at io@samaritans.oro If you would like to talk face to face with a volunteer, visit us at 32 Northgate, Canterbury CT1 1BL. WORKAID "HELPING PEOPLE TO FIND THEIR DIGNITY" WORKAID is a charity, headquartered in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, which collects unwanted tools and equipment from across the country, refurbishes them and distributes them to people in need to help them to earn a living. WORKAID is committed to tackling poverty in a practical way by helping disadvantaged people in East Africa, and in the UK, to help themselves through practical skills training. Unwanted tools and equipment are collected from all over the UK and refurbished by a team of dedicated volunteers at the WORKAID workshop. The refurbished tools are then sent to vocational training projects where they help vulnerable and disadvantaged people to learn trade skills and start their own businesses. Each year, WORKAID helps over 8,000 people to break the cycle of poverty and rebuild their lives. They assist projects working with orphans, street children, unemployed teenagers, disabled people, people living with HIV/AIDS, widows and refugees. By working with carefully monitored projects they are able to make a difference to individuals and families and help communities to build a brighter future together. In 2015 WORKAID was proud to be the recipient ofthe Queen's Award for Voluntary Service and last year celebrated its 30th Anniversary. It was Easter Day, and there was Jesus laughing. His head was thrown back, and you could almost hear His hearty laugh. It was full ofjoy and hope. Death was vanquished and victory was his, because God had raised him to New Life. Resurrection means that it is the beginning of a New Creation. A Kingdom of love where sins are forgiven and we are reunited with God Our Father. Christ’s kingdom is full of love, hope and joy, and there is Jesus laughing with sheerjoy, vitality and life. ‘Life in all its fullness‘, which can be ours Now - in ourjoys, and in our sorrows, every step of the way of our earthly journey, and beyond, on to eternity. It is true Good Friday had to happen. There can be no Easter Day without it, no Good Friday without Christmas, and no life without Jesus. By raising Jesus to life, God confirmed Good Friday. Good Friday was right. Jesus was right. The way of Love is right. The way of the Cross is vindicated. By the Resurrection, God says ‘Yes’ to Jesus to all he said and did, and to the promises he made. Reverend Ken Taylor said this; ‘Easter means He offers you a new beginning, a new world for you, and a new you forthe world, new peace, new light and new perspectives. A new lease of life TODAY! The last word is not with death but with Jesus‘. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia! A Happy, Joyous and Blessed Easter. Margaret. Thank you Viv B Christian Aid Week: 14-20 May Standing with refugees like Nejebar Nejebar and her family have fled horrors in Afghanistan, where her husband was threatened with torture and death for being a government worker. But now they’ve arrived in Greece, all they have is a tent. They have no other protection against wind and rain. There’s no school for their five children. And they have no clear idea of what will happen to them now. They thought they would stay here for 10 days, but it’s already been six months and there’s no end in sight. Nejebar’s husband Noor describes their initial reaction to arriving in the camp in Greece: ‘It was like suicide for us. But we took the decision that it is betterto die here than to die there from war.’ Thanks to generous collectors and donors, Christian Aid has been there for refugees like Nejebar since 1945, providing essential food, shelter and legal assistance for people far from home. From Christian Aid Week’s very beginnings people have been collecting house-to- house to support people like Nejebar. All the money collected goes to Christian Aid partner organisations working directly with the people in need - where they are. No money ever goes directly to foreign governments. It's hard to take in that in 2017, 65 million people are fleeing their homes due to conflicts, persecution and disasters. Christian Aid will never turn its back on them. If you can help this Christian Aid Week, by delivering and collecting envelopes or in any other way — please get in touch. It will make a difference. It is mainly dogs that are affected as they are less fussy in what they scavenge and eat but we do see cases of cats that are poisoned too. The most common poisons that affect pets are: 1) Rodent Poisons (‘Rodenticides'), these contain anticoagulants, such as warfarln, which prevent blood clotting. Not all rodenticides are anticoagulants so it is really important to try and find out which one has been ingested. Ingesting these poisons can cause life-threatening bleeding. This bleeding may not appear for several days and may be internal and not visible so it is vital that you seek veterinary attention as soon as possible if you think that your pet may have eaten rat poison. 2) Chocolate, contains the stimulant theobromine which is toxic to dogs. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, dehydration, hyperactivity, high temperature and blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm and tremors. 3) Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants, are very toxic for our pets and cooking or baking doesn't reduce the risks. Poisoning causes vomiting and diarrhoea but can lead to kidney failure a few days after the initial effects. 4) Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID's), eg. Ibuprofen. It is not uncommon for us to see dogs that have eaten their owners medication. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding internally, stomach ulceration and kidney failure. 5) Slug Pellets, these contain metaldehyde which is extremely poisonous and is usually fatal without urgent treatment. Dogs that have eaten slug pellets may initially appear unsteady on their feet and twitchy but may rapidly deteriorate and suffer convulsions and possibly respiratory failure. 6) Antifreeze, this contains ethylene glycol which has a sweet taste that is particularly appealing to cats. Ingesting even the smallest amount can cause kidney failure and death. If you suspect that you pet may have been poisoned it is essential to seek urgent veterinary advice as the sooner these cases are treated the better chances they have of making a full recovery. If you are at all concerned please call Bourne Veterinary Practice on 01227 832322 for further information. After the short dark days of winter the warmth of the sunshine has been most welcome. Spring flowers, lambs in the fields and bright green new growth on the trees all speak of new life and the promise of better days to come. The donkey ride into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, followed by the last supper and the darkness of Good Friday, were followed by the glory of Easter morning. We were honoured to have the Bishop of Dover take many of our Easter services. Large congregations at these services led Bishop Trevor to proclaim that “there is life in this BeneficeV. Other new shoots are appearing in our churches. The Songs of Praise services at Bekesbourne on the first Sunday of a month, led by members of the church community, are popular. The Good Friday workshop at Lower Hardres had over 50 children and adults participating in the activities, and the Coffee Cake and Concert mornings at Bridge Church are enjoyed by many from both the church and the community. As you know we are at present without a Parish Priest, but as well as being well supported by many retired priests, and Margaret, we are starting to learn to do more ourselves as lay members of the church. This is something we will need to continue to do to support any future Priest in their work amongst us. The Churchwardens and members of the PCCs have met with the new Archdeacon the Venerable Jo Kelly—Moore, and she is reassuringly confident that we will soon be able to appoint a new Priest. So, for our churches the darkness of the last few months is really starting to brighten this spring! Twelve years later Christian Aid Week was launched to help fund this ongoing work. Christians refused to stand by while people suffered in refugee camps or endured poverty and injustice, and for the last 60 years volunteers have delivered more than 7 million envelopes house-to-house, collecting money to support Christian Aid’s partner organisations all over the world. Christian Aid supporter Theodor is 91 and lives in Scotland. After the 2nd World War he was a refugee in camps in Europe. He says he owes his life to the work of Christian Aid supporters. ‘It was Christian Aid who sent us care packages; it was Christian Aid who fed us. I feel I owe my life to the cause.’ Theodor volunteers every Christian Aid Week because of the vital support he received when he was a refugee. Please give generously this Christian Aid Week. Seventy three people (including 20 children) packed St Peters Bekesbourne on Sunday 2nd April for the latest ‘Songs of Praise Celebration’. The theme for this service was ‘Bell Ringing’ and was ably lead by Captain of the Bells Gill Moon. During the service we learnt about the history of bell ringing in churches, from the tolling of a single bell to summon worshipers to pray, to the introduction of multiple bells and the art of change ringing. We also heard about the magnificent efforts of individuals, national charities and the Friends of Bekesbourne Church who by 2005 had raised over £35,000 to have the bells restored. These bells are rung by a willing band of ringers before every major service in the church, most of whom also contributed in some way during the service. Not only did we hear change ringing prior to our service but afterwards children and adults enjoyed tolling the bells themselves and while the children also indulged in Easter Eggs the adults enjoyed tea, coffee and biscuits. The Songs of Praise services were the brain child of the Bekesbourne Parochial Church Council and the format, devised by the Standing Committee, is aimed at both adults and children. An important part of the service is the informal gathering afterwards. Firstly a reminder of our fund—raising Afternoon Tea in the Pavilion on the Recreation Ground from 2.30 until 4.00 pm on Friday 5th May. We will be serving teas and cake during the afternoon (£3 charge) and there will be a craft/bring and buy stall as well as a raffle to tempt you while you enjoy a chat with friends in the pleasant surroundings of the pavilion or perhaps outside in the May sunshine. Everyone is welcome so do join us on the 5th. Our regular monthly evening meeting is on Tuesday 16th at the usual time of 7.30 pm in Bridge Village Hall. The May meeting is the Resolutions meeting when we will be discussing the resolution to be put to the National WI Council Meeting in June. As May is also our birthday meeting there will be a celebratory light buffet supper to enjoy. The competition will be an interesting blue coloured item. Nailbourne Horticultural Society The Society has organised an interesting evening outing to Samphire Hoe on Tuesday 9 May. Samphire Hoe is owned by Eurotunnel and managed together with the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership (WCCP), as a place for people and a place for wildlife. It covers a 30—hectare site at the foot of Shakespeare Cliff, between Dover and Folkestone. Chief Ranger, Paul Holt, will meet us there at 6.30 pm and will give us a talk and guided walk which should last about 90 minutes. There will be a small charge of £4 per person. It could be breezy and cool when the sun goes behind the cliffs so it is advisable to wear warm clothing. After our visit refreshments will be available to purchase in the cafe there. Please meet at Green Court/Western Avenue at 5.45 pm to arrange transport sharing. And let's hope that the weather is kind to us for this outing. See you then! National Vegetable Society - Kent Association The guest speaker at the meeting on Wednesday 10 May (7.30 for 8.00 pm start) in Bridge Village Hall, is John Trim, a successful exhibitor, highly respected speaker and judge of the NVS, who will be giving a talk entitled "A||iums are enough to make you cry". The garage was founded by ‘old Mr Rogers’ in 1924. He is still remembered by older members of the village. On 1st January 1935, a young ‘Sonny’ Milne—Spaull joined him, only to join the army in October 1939, returning in 1946. The next milestone in the life of the garage was when Clive, his son joined the firm on leaving school in July 1967. In those days petrol and paraffin (oil heaters and lamps being very much part of village life) were sold from pumps on the forecourt. The old A2 London to Dover of course ran through the village, so it was a very busy place. Mr Rogers died in 1973 but by then had handed over to Sonny. He then ran the business until his death in 1993 when Clive took over. Which village car owner has not been helped out by Clive at some time or another, flat battery or poor starting or the odd bit of welding? Now Clive has decided it his time for him to go and spend more time with his wife. We will miss his garage, miss his chat with the latest village news, and above all, miss Clive. So Goodbye Clive and have a long and happy retirement. The most common tick in the UK is Ixodes Ricinus or the sheep tick which is found lurking in shady, grassy areas. They are most active in the warm, wet weather of Spring and Autumn, when they seek out mammals to attach to, and we are seeing quite a few at the moment! The sheep tick is generally oval, flat and small, the size of a sesame seed when unfed, but when completely engorged with blood, they can grow to the size of a coffee bean. They look for hosts to feed on by climbing to the top of long blades of grass and waiting ( a behaviour known as ‘questing’) for passing traffic such as your pet. Long—haired dogs and inquisitive dogs are most frequently infected and the ticks most commonly attach to the head and chest area. If you find a tick on your pet, it’s important to remove it carefully with a special tick remover otherwise embedded mouth parts can be left behind and can cause local reaction and infection. Ticks can also spread nasty diseases such as Lyme Disease which can cause fever, lethargy and arthritis and has been reported in both dogs and humans in the UK. Ticks can be prevented from attaching to your pet by using a low dose release collar such as Seresto, spot—on liquids or tablets, all of which are prescription medicines available from your vets. Please call us at Bourne Vets on 01227 832322 for further information. We are holding our Annual Open Day on Bank Holiday Monday 29th May from 12pm—4pm and hope lots of you can make it. Please come and have a look behind the scenes, learn more about what we can do to help you look after your pets and meet lots of interesting and unusual animals. You’ll also be able to look around our new Cat—Only Clinic which opened in February. This is a great day out for all the family, that’s completely free and we hope we’ll see lots of you there. Whip the cream and milk until it is nearly stiff, but not quite. Arrange in large spoonfuls on top of the fruit, adding the toasted almonds. Boil the sugar and water together until it forms a caramel, watching it until you just catch a whiff of that lovely caramel smell before it burns. Pour over the top of the cream and nuts, and make sure it goes down into the fruit as well. It will bubble and form a solid layer. Leave until the caramel has cooled. It is now ready to eat, and is best not put into a fridge. This is not a pudding that can be made long in advance as the caramel will melt again. It serves 6 or so. In October we /\ A $3 -rated the lives of two friends who both died on 15 September, “L\\ Q r and Judy Woodley. Our pastoral letter this month features 9 age ites paid by Bishop Richard Llewelin and Dean Emeritus Dr e""‘9°°""‘ at their respective memorial services in St Pauls Church, Canterbury and Canterbury Cathedral. Both services included the hymn ‘Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, Endless is the victory Thou o'er death has won’. Canon Gordon Manlev (1933-2017) Bishop Richard started by quoting a letter received from a former parishioner which summed up Gordon perfectly: a complete professional as a priest, someone with pastoral sensitivity, knowing what to do and when to do it, and also a stickler that everything should be done properly. But also, a man of humour with a sense of fun who, while he took his priesthood absolutely seriously, had the ability not to take himself too seriously. Another wrote of him, ‘Gordon was, of course, a proper clergyman, and a distinctive leader who had the qualities to make a difference. He always spoke with authority and conviction’. Gordon was ordained in 1959 as curate to the Parish of St Alban’s, Westbury on Tryrn in the Bristol Diocese and from there went to be Chaplain at Christ’s College, Cambridge, during which time he and Susan were married. He was then appointed Vicar of Radlett, where his curate was a young Richard Llewelin. The two families have been close friends ever since. In 1975 Gordon became Vicar of St Mary of Charity, Faversham, where he and Susan brought up their three children. He and the family were much loved and respected in Faversham, both by church folk and the wider community. During that time he helped to raise over £300,000 for the church’s restoration. On his retirement in 1998 he was made an honorary Canon of Canterbury Cathedral and continued an active priestly ministry, not only in the cathedral but in a number of surrounding villages (including our Benefice). As he remarked to Bishop Richard, ‘I dont feel Sunday is a Sunday ifl haven’t been leading worship in some church’. Gordon and Susan have been devoted parents and grandparents and Bishop Richard spoke of family members, events and observances, including the traditional Sunday lunch with the family gathered, which has been an almost invariable part of their Sunday liturgy. Gordon had chosen to have his funeral at St Paul’s and had chosen the two readings, though no—one knew how soon that funeral would be. Bishop Richard concluded by saying, ‘We have gathered, not only to remember a devoted husband, father and grandfather, a good friend and an assiduous priest, and to give thanks for his life and pray for his family, but first and foremost to commit Gordon into the hands of Almighty God’. May he rest in peace, and rise in glory. 5-3 ‘ Judy Woodley (1940-2017) Q E 3 rice on 9th October, Dr John Simpson recollected knowing E s a woman whose faith underpinned her life. Her qualities A A generosity, quiet strength, wisdom, knowing when to speak or \ so; in all she did, excellence was her goal; she conveyed much , ,, ,:as reflected in her exceptional ability as a player, and in 1974 she was invited to be Head of Girls’ Games when King's School opened its 6th form to girls. Judy was an instigator of a range ofsports and soon the teams began to win tennis, hockey, netball and squash trophies. As a part-time staff member, it was due to her determination that a firm foundation was established for when the School later became fully co—educational, but it was not until 1998 that she became a full—time member of staff and her additional responsibilities widened to include PE and being a Group Tutor. Dr Simpson recalled Judy’s remarkable energy, for as well as her commitments at School she brought up theirfamily of two daughters, Lucy and Miranda (Minna), and was a mainstay as a Housemaster’s wife, with all sorts of domestic and pastoral issues to deal with, including being a confidante and mother figure to the boys. She responded to requests to organise keep-fit classes, ballroom dancing lessons, teaching tennis, and supported Stephen in his work ungrudgingly. It was notjust to the School that Judy gave her time — she was active in the life of the Cathedral — Friday night dance lessons at the Deanery and Keep-fit classes on Monday mornings. For many years Judy was a Cathedral Welcomer; her daughters became regular servers and later were both married there. Stephen was to become a Steward and Judy, with her lovely voice, was a Lesson Reader and after her retirement also a Steward. Dr Simpson had two abiding memories of Judy: at one Cathedral Carol Service in the 1990s her moving reading of the Annunciation story, ‘as though we were hearing for the first time the mystery of the incarnation being disclosed’. Secondly, of being guests of the Woodley's at Vlfimbledon for many years. Yet this year there had been a difference — he believed Judy knew she had not long to live and was saying ‘goodbye’ to friends she had loved, in a setting which was — Judy. ‘Our God is the God of the living, in whom both living and departed live. Amen’. Harvest Lunch Sincere thanks to all who came and who helped in any way. Bekesbourne Songs of Praise Did you know that although celebrations and thanks forthe harvest have been celebrated since pagan times, it was not until 1843 that a service ofthanksgiving for the safe gathering in of our crops was held in a British church? A congregation of all ages came to Bekesbourne Church in Octoberto hear Stuart Field tell us how the Old English word meaning ‘Autumn’ came to have its meaning today. We sang familiar harvest hymns (and a Harvest Samba!) and the children identified Jonathan Cowan’s bunches ofdifferent grains which grow in the district -- as well as finding out how they reappear in our kitchens. Gifts were offered and blessed forthe Canterbury Women’s Refuge and after the service we all enjoyed coffee and lots of chat. Do come and join us at 10.00 am on Sunday 1 November, when the theme will be Remembrance. Jane Millyard You are warmly invited to Come and Sing Carols at St Peters, Bridge — 6pm on Sunday, December 17th and, more particularly, tojoin us in the Bridge Choir, which will be specially augmented as usual forthe occasion of the Carol Service. As in previous years, the choir will be supporting the congregational singing, and also adding another dimension to the familiar Christmas Readings with a varied, but not unfamiliar selection ofshort carols of their own. The present intention is to perform A Shoot, a Shoot on Jesse’s Tree (English trad., arr. Hitchcock), There is no Rose of Such Vertu (Miles), Rocking (Czech trad., arr. Willcocks), Glory to God in the Highest (Si|cher/J S Bach), This Endris Night (English trad., arr. Vaughan V\filliams/Shaw) and New Prince, New Pomp (Fletcher). We are looking for all voices (SATB) from all age groups, and hope to welcome back many old friends as well as gain a few new enthusiasts. Some experience and/or ability to read music is necessary for the harmony parts, but not vital forthe top line. We will again keep rehearsals to a minimum, but forthat reason it is crucial that most people can make both the main rehearsals as well as the Sunday! The rehearsals will almost certainly be held in Bridge Church as follows: Thursday, December 14th 7—8.30 p.m. Friday, December 15th 6—7.30 p.m. Sunday, December 17th 3.45-5.30 p.m. Music will be available in advance and for private study! If you are able to join us, please let me know as soon as possible on Canterbury 787994 or mim@.kinQs-schoo|.co.uk. I can then assess vocal balance and the viability of the programme! Art in Bridge Report 17th Annual Open Exhibition October 2017 This was another successful exhibition with over 150 exhibits. Exhibits covering paintings, photographs, sculptures and craftwork from people of all ages living or working in a rural parish within a five mile radius of Bridge were shown. Bridge and Patrixbourne Church of England Primary School contributed two hanging banners. The exhibition favourite was Owl and Pussycat by Elizabeth Stewart. The results can be seen on the web site (www.artinbridge.org.uk). Refreshments were available and visitors were encouraged to sit and talk. There was a presentation by Sue Pratt, the Young Arts representative of The Arts Society Canterbury Evening, one of this years sponsors, of gift tokens, generously donated by Cowling and Vlfilcox, Canterbury awarded in a non-competitive draw to two artists, one junior under eleven years of age and one senior up to the age of eighteen years. The junior prize was awarded to Phoebe Hodges who submitted three pieces of art work. The senior prize was awarded to Amelia Johnson who submitted two pieces of art work. Grateful thanks are also due to our other exhibition sponsors The Bourne Gallery, Picture Framing Service at Chalkpit Farm and Colebrook Sturrock & Co. As always the successful weekend was due to the many talented exhibitors and loyal helpers. Sue Hodges Not everyone enjoys Christmas Samaritans are here for our callers every day of the year but we do know that there are some times more difficult than others. Christmas can be a particularly hard and stressful period for many people. On their own, having lost contact with their family or perhaps missing close friends or relations who have passed away. While most families are getting togetherto enjoy this time of year they can feel very isolated and depressed. Whatever the reason, Samaritans offer a safe place to talk; at any time you like, in your own way, about whatever’s getting to you. You needn’t feel alone, we are here to talk through whatever is troubling you, 24/7. Condensed Minutes: Bridge Parish Council Thursday 12 October 2017 Comments on the village strategic plan (now on the website) will be sought from villagers on 7 November and by invitation on the website and in social media. Cllr Cook pointed out that RISE grants are now available from not-for-profit and voluntary organisations with details on the Canterbury City Council website. The same website has been revised to enable villagers to log complaints with SERCO about waste bin emptying. The website has also been made more user-friendly for the reporting of fly-tipping. Highland Court proposals Council voted on the current Highland Court proposal. 6 voted against the proposals with one abstention. The Clerk was asked to set up a meeting with relevant local parishes to see ifthere is to be common ground in dealing with this proposal. Cllr Simon Cook, when asked as the local councillor for North Nailbourne (including Bridge village) rather than as leader of the City Council, to reveal his own thoughts about the proposals said he does not feel convinced that the reasons given for such extensive developments in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are of ‘‘national significance” as they would need to be. Kent News Villagers are encouraged to respond to the Kent County Council budget settlement themselves by accessing the kent.gov.uk website. It is clearthat there need to be multiple reports for Kent Highways to intervene in road improvements/drainage issues. Villagers will henceforth be encouraged to report problems “en masse”. Parish news Management of the sports pavilion has been taken in-house by the parish council. Contact the Clerk to know more about hiring opportunities. Christmas trees will go up on December 2 and come down on January 6. Work is likely to start in Green Court on 1 November 2017. Residents will be informed by letter when the exact start date is known. There have been 3 recent Speedwatch sessions. 6 speeding vehicles were reported to police on 29 September and another 11 on 12 October. (2 cars had been travelling over 60 mph near Higham Lane of that occasion). Sessions will be conducted weekly and volunteers are sought from the village. It was agreed to advertise the new defibrillator on social media and to encourage training for interested Villagers. Next meeting on Thursday. 9 November 2017 at 7.30 pm. in Bridcle Villaae Hall # Condensed Minutes: Bridge Parish Council Thursday 14 September 2017 It was agreed to publish all BPC policies on the website. Neighbourhood Plan: The latest version of the plan (v.6 dated August 2017) is to be uploaded to the village website. Cllr Atkinson reported that at the NP meeting held on 17 August (minutes to be uploaded to the village website) members had been informed that Cantley Ltd were no longer interested in developing the site to the north of Conyngham Lane and that a meeting has been set for 5 October with Canterbury City Council. Bridge Parish Counci|’s draft strategic plan will be published on the website and comments invited from villagers. The Chair emphasised that the document must not be seen as being an exclusive or definitive list of activities forthe Parish Council, and that it cannot be considered as binding on future councils. It was decided to put forward pavilion related projects (heating and insulation) to access Parish Capital Grant funds by the deadline of 2 October. Councillors agreed to formally request of the relevant authorities dropped kerbs on Riverside Close and the retention of a passing space by Roger’s Garage on the High St. Bridge and Patrixhourne Church of England Prilnary School Bonfire G: Firework Display Saturday 4"‘ November 2017 0n Bridge Becreation Ground Look at the School wehsite & posters for more details WRITE FOR RIGHTS Amnesty |nternationa|’s annual sending of seasonal greetings and messages of hope to prisoners—of—conscience and their families Come and sign a card at Friends Meeting House The Friars, Canterbury on Saturday 25"‘ November between 10am and 2pm Meet Rosie Duffield, Canterbury's new MP Refreshments — Films - Music BRIDGE PAVILION Recently refurbished and refitted Available for hire every day of the week all vear round Very well equipped for classes/parties/meetings. Our children exhibited at Art in Bridge and have opened up the school to parents and the community to view their learning. Our Year 6 children have performed both Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a part of the Royal Shakespeare Schools’ Festival, at the Gulbenkian Theatre, and as part of the Canterbury Festival, our orchestra performed in the Spiegel Tent. It was fantastic to see so many people in the village community and beyond, attending our fireworks display and this helped us to raise much needed funds forthe school, so that we can continue with the development of art and music, especially in this time of significant budget cuts. We have also contributed some of these funds to the Royal British Legion and to the Oncology Department at Kent & Canterbury Hospital. In terms of our achievement, we have recently received a letter from Patrick Leeson, Corporate Director of Children, Young People and Education, at KCC, recognising the achievements in our school of the children. To view the letter, please visit our school website at www.bridge.kent.sch.uk. Our great learning and ethos was also recognised in October, where we underwent a Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) inspection, in which we were graded Outstanding across all aspects. As I mentioned in the summer term, I will be leaving Bridge & Patrixbourne Church of England Primary School on 20”‘ December 2017, having been at the school for over 12 years. The school and the village community will always hold a dear place in my head. In this time of change for our school, we have also appointed a new Chair of Governors, Matthew Jones, who will continue to help guide the Governing Body, along with the Senior Leadership Team, to strategically lead our school. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Dr Jeremy Hayter, our previous Chair of Governors, for all his help, devotion and hard work, during his term as Chair. Once again, I would like to say that it has been an absolute pleasure to have worked in our school and serve the local community and I would like to thank you for all your support and kindness; I will miss you all. Renuka Chinnadurai Headteacher As Ren mentioned in the summer, I will be taking over as Acting Headteacherthrough until September 2018, and during this time our school will be looking for someone to take on the permanent position of Headteacher. I look forward to working closely with the village community, continuing to build strong links with you and the church and to meeting you around the village. Matt Harper Deputy Headteacher Christmas Workshop On Saturday, December 2nd, there will be a Christmas Workshop at John Baker White Hall, at 9.30am to noon. Hunger is not a simple problem; it’s driven by issues such as climate change and conflict. Aluel is the sole provider for her family. She runs a small business selling tea and bread at a market in South Sudan. But life has been a struggle. On a bad day her family would havejust one meal consisting of wild leaves. Christian Aid has helped by providing food vouchers, enabling herto buy ingredients to cook nutritious meals for her children. In Burkino Faso, Collette was forced to walk miles in 45°C heat, carrying her baby on her back, to search for gold in the country’s gruelling mines. Christian Aid’s market garden project gave her a plot of land and trained her to grow vegetables, providing the seeds and tools she needed. She said, “I no longer have to go to the mines and my children are not malnourished. The garden has changed my Iife”. Christian Aid wants everyone to have a story like Aluel and Collette. In a world of plenty, when we in this country can stock our Iarders and freezers to bursting point with luxury Christmas food, hunger like this should not exist. If you would like to make a gift to Christian Aid this Christmas, the UK government’s UKaid scheme will match every pound you give to the Appeal up to the 5 February 2018, meaning that even more people living in poverty can have their lives transformed. You can donate direct to www.christianaid.org.uk or if you prefer, place your gift in an envelope and pass it to me and I will make sure it goes to the Christmas Appeal.
