Or, as we say in the Church, “Alleluia! Christ is Risen!” I hope by the time you read this that we have really begun to see some proper signs of spring in our villages — the premature daffodils that were clobbered by the recent snowfall have just begun to raise their heads again as I write. Springtime brings with it the hope of warmer days, greener fields and the beauty of the world we inhabit literally springing forth. Hope too of renewal in our church life - we have enjoyed some wonderful worship in our churches just recently with more than 150 people (adults and children) worshipping together around the benefice on Mothering Sunday! How good it was to see so many of you in your ‘Mother’ church, celebrating God’s gifts of love and care and giving thanks. I am hoping too that we will have had a full church on Palm Sunday for our Benefice Service in Bridge (and that the donkey behaved himseIf!). Do join us for our Benefice Service at Patrixbourne on 29”‘ April — the more the merrier! The celebration of Easter is also all about hope, the hope that we have in the Risen Christ showing us that our human life with its trials and tribulations isn’t all there is and that we have something more to look fon/vard to. Our hope as Christians though isn’t purely based on what might be to come in ‘the glorious hereafter’ but is also firmly rooted in the promise that we are loved by a God who will never abandon us, will always forgive us when we go wrong and longs to walk alongside us as we journey through life. Our beautiful churches bear witness to His enduring presence in the life of our communities for generations past and hopefully generations to come. I am beginning to get to know you all a bit now but if I haven’t been to visit your interest group or activity in any ofthe villages do give me a bell and invite me along. If we haven’t already met I look forward to meeting you. There will be further opportunities to join me for coffee at the Vicarage — look out for the lists or give me a ring to book yourself in. Otherwise I look forward to hearing from you if there is anything else that we in the church can help you with. Yours in Christ [613]] Hev. Bekesbourne is holding its APCM at the Recreation Ground Pavilion on Thursday 12th April at 7.30pm (for details see page 17 of the March edition of ‘On the Nail’). Patrixbourne with Bridge is holding its APCM in St Peters Church, Bridge on Wednesday 18th April at 7.30pm (see details below) The acronym APCM is cleverly described by one of the parishes in our diocese as — Appointing Churchwardens; ECC members needed; Come onto the Electoral Roll; Managing our church. Adopting that model: — A the Churchwardens are elected at the Annual Meeting of Parishioners (aka Vestry Meeting); all from the civic parish are welcome to attend and may vote at this meeting; it precedes the APCM. E the Annual Report & Financial Statements of the PCC for 2017 is available in both churches or from the Churchwardens. It notes we were in interregnum for the whole year (from Sept 2016); it gives thanks to all who helped us through the vacancy and rejoices at the news that the Reverend Estella Last will be our next Priest in Charge. Estella was licensed 8. installed on 30th January and will chair this APCM. Its Agenda will include brief (1 minute) reports from various church groups. C the Church Electoral Roll entitles you to vote at the APCM — please speak to a Churchwarden if you wish to be added to the roll. M the Priest, Churchwardens & PCC are key figures in managing both our churches. Do please support them by attending the APCM, volunteering to serve on the PCC and/or as Sidespersons and voting in their elections; also offering to help in many other ways. Alan Barber — Patrixbourne with Bridge PCC Secretary Mothering Sunday at St Peter’s Bekesbourne The start of the service had to be delayed as more and more poured through the door on Mothering Sunday at St Peter’s Bekesbourne. A staggering 49 adults and 20 children packed into the church for their Songs of Praise. Ably led by Pat Kusel the congregation sang their hearts out with familiar hymns and the very popular "My Mum’s one in a million” being sung with particular gusto with both organ (Andrew Cooper) and CD accompaniment. Pat gave a particularly poignant explanation of the difference between the biblical ‘Mothering Sunday’ and the secular "Mother’s Day”, and why the day comes in the middle of Lent, in a manner understood by all. These services continue to be very popular attracting many who would not normally attend a more conventional church service. The items placed in a yellow bin, whether in a supermarket or in the Church, are regularly collected and taken to the Chestfield Collection Centre by volunteers. There they are separated into individual bags: Adult 1, Adult 2 and children. These bags represent sustenance for 3 days emergency supplies — the contents have been put together by a nutritionist taking into account the limitations (no fresh foods/homemade items). They are issued on a voucher system by various agencies (Church, Schools, CAB to name but 3) and these vouchers are given to people in need of emergency help, but only up to 5 vouchers per year. The CAB and the Canterbury Debt Advice Centre are present to give further assistance. I will attempt to list the contents of the individual bags on a future occasion, but they all contain UHT milk and juice, tinned vegetables and meat, both as a meal or for slicing, plus other items including pasta and jam. If known in advance, bags are made up to suit individual needs, eg vegetarian. This is a Christian Agency backed by many local businesses and the Rotary Club and is very well organised. If you only donate one item a month, it will be very well received and it will help someone in our District area to get through a very difficult patch in their life. ‘Food For Thought’ Nailbourne Horticultural Society Saturday 7 April Bridge Village Hall Show open to public 1 lam to 1.00pm Presentation of Prizes 12.45 pm Includes 3 Open Classes (for all to enter): 0 5 sticks of rhubarb (pulled & leaves trimmed) 0 6 chitted seed potatoes in an egg box 0 a photo, unframed, not to exceed 8” X 6” entitled “New Life” Refreshments Raffle Plant/Bring and Buy Stall For Show Schedule and more details, telephone Brenda on 831704 St Peter's Church, Bekesbourne SONGS OF PRAISE 10am Sunday 6th May Rogation Service Godparents Day SUITABLE FOR ALL AGES EVERYONE WELCOME COME AND JOIN IN YOUR FAVOURITE HYMNS ._ _ _ '_I'ha_mk You For Being Our E Godparents 9 '7 - 7' - ___(';"¢/;,é11:)aaVre!1t$.a.re en-ctra. Bridge Childcare Centre Bridge Childcare Centre Committee is a charitable body that was created to raise funds to purchase and maintain Bridge Childcare Centre. The Centre is home to Bridge After School Club and Woodpeckers Nursery, both charities in their own right, and is situated on the grounds of Bridge and Patrixbourne C.E.P school. After a recent condition survey it has been discovered that £30,000 is needed to carry out the essential repairs to ensure the future of the current building. The committee plan to raise the funds necessary to carryout these repairs over the next 12-18 months to secure the future of two well used local charities. The committee, made entirely of parent volunteers from Bridge After School Club and Woodpeckers Nursery, are appealing to anyone locally that may be able to help with donating materials, time or money to help to raise the sum needed. For more information or to offer any support please contact the committee in one of the following ways. UK is Ixodes Ricinus or the sheep tick which is found lurking in shady, grassy areas. They are most active in the warm, wet weather of Spring and Autumn when they seek out mammals to attach to and we are seeing quite a few at the moment now that the weather is warmer and wetter! The sheep tick is generally oval, flat and small, the size of a sesame seed when unfed, but when completely engorged with blood, they can grow to the size of a coffee bean. They look for hosts to feed on by climbing to the top of long blades of grass and waiting (a behaviour known as ‘questing’) for passing traffic such as your pet. Long- haired dogs and inquisitive dogs are most frequently infected and the ticks most commonly attach to the head and chest area. If you find a tick on your pet, its important to remove it carefully with a special tick remover otherwise embedded mouth parts can be left behind and can cause local reaction and infection. Ticks can also spread nasty diseases such as Lyme Disease which can cause fever, lethargy and arthritis and this has been reported in both dogs and humans in the UK. Ticks can be prevented from attaching to your pet by using a low dose release collar such as Seresto, spot-on liquids ortablets all of which are prescription medicines available from your vets. CllrAAtkinson reported on a meeting ofthe River Group held on 10 February. An official from Kent County Council outlined the scale of recent budget cuts, though she conceded that further work is needed on the soakaway at the end of Conyngham Lane and that drainage in the High St needs further review. Villagers and councillors should continue to log drainage problems on the KCC highways website. The local region is in a state of water stress at the moment-with water levels very low in both reservoirs and aquifers. Further national funding to pay for flood protection in the Nail Bourne valley should be released by the end of 2018. Council agreed to the fireworks and bonfire event being held on 3 November 2018. Cllr Fawke stated that Green Court developments had been hampered by the recent severe weather but that they would be renewed as soon as possible (to include further groundworks, replanting oftrees and planting of new shrubs and flowers). Council voted unanimously in favour of two motions: That BPC does not support the latest revised proposals for development of Highland Court Farm as presented on 15 February 2018 That BPC explores the costs and options for a new website V\fith regard to motion (b) Council was keen to ensure that the current volunteers who provide an excellent service to the village website are informed of the reasons forthis motion and are encouraged to take part in the proposed review. Sweet cherries and home grown raspberries make the most delicious pudding imaginable. It made up beautifully using gluten free digestive biscuits. If you do use them, use a little less butter. Cherry and Raspberry Fudge Crumble 1 % lb/900g frozen cherries and raspberries (approx.) 2oz/50g sugar, white or brown (to taste — I usually use less) Slug of cassis/framboise for the crumble: 4oz/110g butter (3.502/90g if using gluten free biscuits) 4oz/110g Demerara sugar 6oz/170g digestive biscuits, crushed to crumbs 1 rounded teaspoon ground cinnamon Defrost the fruit in an ovenproofdish. Add the liqueur and sugarto taste. Set the oven to 200 deg C. Melt the butter in a saucepan, stir in the Demerara sugar, digestive crumbs and cinnamon. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring from time to time. Then coverthe fruit with the crumble and bake in a hot oven 200 deg C for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve either warm with vanilla ice cream (home made, naturally!) or cold with whipped cream/Greek yoghurt. Pentecost the Birth of the Church FOOD BANK Why is there a need for a Food Bank in the area? It could arise from a sudden change in circumstances, such as family break-up, illness, unexpected bill, redundancy or even reduced working hours which can result in people unable to feed themselves and their families, even in our apparently affluent corner of Kent. A huge thank you to everyone in our local villages for supporting this cause by donating directly to the yellow bin in St Peters Church, Bridge, and especially to those who heeded my earlier request for much needed UHT milk and juice and canned vegetables. This was gratefully received at the Collection Centre. The items are sorted into three main bags: Adult 1,Adult 2 and children. The children’s bags contain: UHT fruit juice and UHT full fat milk, cereal, biscuits, baked beans x2, tinned pasta, soup, pasta sauce, canned vegetables x2, dried pastal potatoes, tinned meat x2, tinned tuna, jam, tinned fruit and a dessert (tinned or UHT). In the week leading up to Easter, 140 bags were filled to order following requests from several of the local schools in the Canterbury/Herne BayNVhitstable area for handing out to children deemed to be in need. These all contained the above, together with an Easter Egg. Next time: the Bonus Table at the Distribution Cafe and what is a Morsbag? Making one of these could help to cut out the use of plastic bags at the Distribution centres in our area. I will find out more about them and pass this on. At Bekesbourne we are lucky to be the only Church with bells for open bell ringing in the Bridge Benefice. Due to some of our ringers moving out of the area we find our numbers have diminished. We need new bell ringers to ensure bell ringing continuity in the Benefice for the future. We practice most Monday evenings from 7.30-9pm and our aim is to ring the bells for the Sunday 9.30am and 10am services. The Bekesbourne bell ringers are a friendly group of people from all walks of life. The bells have recently been restored and are not heavy to ring, it is a sociable pastime enjoyed by all aged 9-90 years of age. This year we were thinking particularly ofthose suffering from the effects of the earthquake and hurricane in Haiti — people like Marcellin, struggling to survive with his family in an abandoned shower block. I’m delighted to report that in this Benefice we have had another record-breaking year and it’s heartening to know that people really do still care and want to give. A massive thank you to all those who collected and donated to help raise the magnificent sum of £2671.37 (with Gift Aid of over £300 to be added). In Bridge & Patrixbourne School the children learnt how Christian Aid is helping partner organisations to provide water pumps, so that people can have access to clean water and improve their health. Each class filled plastic water bottles with silver coins, raising a marvellous £508.36. Well done children, parents and teachers! In Haitian Creole there is a saying: ‘Mwen santi mwen an vi. Mwen santi mwen egziste‘ which means ‘I feel like I am alive. I feel like I am part of existence’. Thank you for helping to keep that hope alive. Jean Barber For more information go to www.christianaid.ord.uk Patrixbourne with Bridge Midsummer Fete. On Behalf of Rev. Estella, the Churchwardens and PCC we would like to thank everyone who made the day a success, whether by helping, donating items or by attending. The weather was kind to us and the garden of the Red Lion is a wonderful setting for the event. Thanks Rene & Harry for letting us use the garden. Thanks to Peggy Pryer for “masterminding. We raised a total of £1215 for church funds. Thanks to all who helped raise this amount. Special thanks to Rene and one “regular” of the Red Lion who both made generous donations. Evelyn Andrews & Laurence Dunderdale, Churchwardens Fish news July 2018 First I must apologise for raising hopes. The Bring and Buy made £318 and not £3018. So the bar will not be too high for next year. The July Coffee Pop-In will be on Wednesday 11th in Bridge Village Hall. We wish him a speedy recovery. The poppy knitters are working hard making the poppies for Littlebourne Church display in November. Any extra knitters or donations of wool would be appreciated. Contact the secretary on 01227 472023. Our next two monthly meetings will be on Tuesdays 10 July and 14 August, both at the Recreation Club, Littlebourne starting at 8pm. All members and friends are welcome. Anyone interested in more information about joining the branch please contact the telephone number above. Professor Joe Connor 1938-2018 It was with great sadness that the Village of Bridge learned of the death of Professor Joe Connor following an accident in April 2018. Joe and his family had lived in Bridge since 2002, for fourteen years in Bourne Lodge until they moved to 1, The High Street. Following a distinguished career at the University of Kent at Canterbury, where Joe was both Professor of Chemistry, Dean of Faculty, and for six years pro-vice chancellor. Joe worked tirelessly for the Village. He served on the Parish Council for 4 years and more recently took on the somewhat challenging task of heading up the Committee forthe Neighbourhood Plan for6 years. Joe was always concerned with those less fortunate than himself and devoted his time to the welfare of others, spending many years as a Prison visitor, where his gift for languages came in very useful. He also acted as a volunteer at the Pilgrims Hospice, and a visitor for Macmillan Cancer support. In fact, he was happy to do whatever task needed to be done. His untimely death has robbed the Village of Bridge of one of its most caring and concerned citizens. Joe Connor leaves a wife, 2 daughters and 6 grandchildren. Jennifer and Martin Vye Arthur Hulyer Arthur Frederick Hulyer born May 4 1923 died January 19 2018 Arthur lived in Bridge for over 54 years and was well known to many people. He and his wife Patricia moved to one of the new houses in Bridge Down when Arthur took up a new post at South Kent College in Folkestone. He lectured there in motor engineering until his retirement some 30 years ago. Cars were the love of his life and he worked for Ford in Dagenham before taking up teaching. During WW2 Arthur enlisted with the RAF and was selected for pilot training in Canada and the States. He flew several missions with Bomber Command over Germany in Stirlings and had many tales to tell of his time with them. At the end of the war he flew out to India to repatriate Japanese POWs this time flying Dakotas. Arthur was a very open, friendly guy and very skilled at making things. He will be much missed. A supermarket day for the Food Bank It was the first BH Saturday in May and a bright sunny day, although there was a strong breeze at Sainsbury’s, Chestfield where we had been invited to distribute leaflets and collect forthe Canterbury Food Bank. There were 3 sets of volunteers all doing 2 hours and I was with the final slot between 2-4 in the afternoon. The whole 6 hours had an excellent response raising £396.33 in cash and 494 food items. In answer to the query as to why cash is also important, the warehouse storing all the dried foods, cans and UHT products works to a prescriptive list forthe Adults and Children's bags. Sometimes there is an excess of items (usually baked beans and soup) and then there can be a shortage (currently UHT milk and juice and tinned meat products for children) and so ifthis occurs then the cash is used to purchase them. I was on the exit door which had more sunshine than the entrance with another volunteer and we were kept busy forthe entire 2-hour slot. One person challenged us as to why a Food Bank is necessary in this area, which was easy to answer, otherwise approximately 10% ofthe busy shoppers stopped to talk and donate, which was very pleasing. Thank you to everyone who supports the Food Bank by donating in the yellow bin in St Peter’s Church in Bridge. It is delivered to the All Saints Centre on a Tuesday when I volunteer, and where the CFB van has already unloaded for distribution in the Café and so has room to take the donations. They go straight to the Collection Centre in Chestfield where each item is logged in, checked for damage or out ofsell by date and then sorted into the bags or if in excess forthe Bonus Table, which I wrote about last month. There are CFB volunteers who give talks to Societies in the Food Bank area and so any Club/organisation in the Bridge and villages who is interested, is invited to either visit the website or email info@canterbu[yfoodbank.org Food For Thought Did you know that slugs and snails can be a real threat to your dog as they can carry potentially life threatening Iungworm larvae. Lungworm has spread considerably in recent years and is now endemic in much ofthe UK. There have been 20 reported cases in Kent and we have seen 2 cases of Lungworm this spring at Bourne Veterinary Practice. Lungworm also know as Angiostrongylus vasorum are slender worms about 2.5 cm long which live in the heart and lungs of dogs and can cause a lot ofdamage. Symptoms of Iungworm infection are varied but often include coughing, lethargy, weight loss, poor appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea. Dogs can become infected with this life-threatening parasite by swallowing infected slugs and snails. Slugs and snails can be very small and even ifdogs dont eat slugs and snails on purpose they may do so accidentally when eating grass, drinking from puddles, rummaging in undergrowth or playing with toys outdoors. If spotted and treated early enough most dogs will make a full recovery, but as this parasite can be fatal, the best way to ensure your pet is protected is by regularly using a product that acts as a preventative. However, not all wormers are effective against Iungworm so be sure to ask your vet for advice. Remember, for Iungworm prevention, treatment must be monthly; using a product every 3 months will not prevent this potentially fatal parasite, as this leaves your dog unprotected for too long between doses. The average UK garden is thought to contain more than 20,000 snails and slugs, any one of which could be carrying Iungworm larvae. As Iungworm cases are on the increase in our area please ask your vet about a Iungworm prevention plan. You can call us at Bourne Veterinary Practice on 01227 832322 for more information. I am sure like me, you are grateful in equal measure for the glorious sunshine we have enjoyed and the welcome rain that has brought everything back to green again. By the time you read this we will be in the full swing of celebrating Harvest in our parishes, giving thanks for all that God has provided for us and reflecting his generosity by giving gifts ourselves in support of worthwhile causes. This week I have been thinking about courage especially in the context of having the courage to stand up for whatwe believe in as Jesus asks his disciples to do. Churches often find themselves ovennrhelmed by large numbers of people seeking an appropriate place to respond with their grief when tragedy strikes a community or nation and rightly so. It is the privilege of every church to be able to support and serve its community in this way. But what about the rest ofthe time? When life is good and we don’t ‘need’ the support of the church? It costs an estimated average of £8,000 per month to keep our 5 churches open, insured, maintained, lit, and ministered to. Every penny ofwhich comes from donations and fundraising. The supposed ‘wealth’ of ‘The Church’ is I'm afraid rarely something from which the local church can benefit. So here I am banging on about money again! Yes sorry but this is about more than money — this is about courage. If we do believe that the church is the place to go to when someone is ill, dying or has died; if we do believe the church is still the place we want to mark our life events at (weddings, baptisms etc); if we do want to celebrate Christmas with a traditional carol service; if we do think that we are ‘Christian’ as 65% of people admitted to hospital said they were in a recent survey, then we need to stop hedging our bets, pluck up our courage, stick up for what we believe in (even if it is flawed and we don’t have all the answers) — and yes, we need to put our money where our mouth is. Otherwise the church won’t be here for future generations (well the buildings might remain as ancient monuments to a bygone era) but the heart of the church, it’s role in our communities won’t. I'm afraid I am going to keep saying it until everyone gets the message — the church can't subsist on thin air any more than the rest of us can and whilst it might be an imperfect institution, run by imperfect individuals in an imperfect world it's what we've got and in some of our villages it is the last remaining community space since the pubs, shops and post offices succumbed to financial unviability. The Church is here for you whether you are a person of strong faith or none, and even if you just don't know. The Church represents something far bigger than our cultural and interfaithl interdenominational squabbles over doctrine or inclusivity, butthe church is in financial deficit in spite ofthe hard work of all our faithful volunteers — something has got to give — maybe you could? As well as giving money — there are so many ways you could help your local church. Volunteers do many things to help the life of the church and to keep costs down — everything from strimming the churchyards to arranging the flowers, singing in the choirto cleaning the pews - there are endless opportunities. Our services are open to everyone (even if you’re not sure what you really believe) and are advertised on our web and Facebook pages as well as in this magazine. You are assured of a warm welcome and who knows you might meet some nice people and make some new friends. Yours in Christ .33, Tiev. LO\/\/ER HARDRES NEV\lS Reminder On Sunday October 7th at 11.00am, there will be a Harvest Thanksgiving Service at St Mary's Lower Hardres. We will be collecting food e.g. tins and packets for Age Concern. There will be a competition for children, young people and adults - paintings, photography, drawings and vegetable animals, all connected to Harvest please. They can be brought to Church on the Saturday morning to be judged. Classes - age 8 years and under, age 9 - 18, and 18 onwards. Children can help to decorate the Church if they wish. We would like to thank everyone who helped and contributed to the Harvest Lunch. Fish news. 40 years ago three remarkable women set up the Fish Scheme in Bridge, Patrixbourne, Bekesbourne and Bishopsbourne . They were Ann Young, Muriel Packer and Joan Warren. Joan, the last ofthem, died during the summer. Based on the idea of a GP and a vicar in Headington, Oxford, the Scheme set out to provide help to fellow villagers. Friends provided transportto the surgery and hospital, a weekly lunch club at the old Close, a housebound library service and a chiropodist clinic. Overthe years it changed to provide increasingly for lifts to Ashford and Margate hospitals, the weekly Coffee Pop-ins and an annual outing. Until recently Ann Medhurst manned the Fish phone alone to liaise hundreds of lifts each year. Now about 25 drivers are asked to give lifts when they can. But the needs are as great as ever. If you could - or know someone who might - please consider becoming a driver. In her last years Joan and her husband used the Scheme themselves. She left us a truly wonderful legacy. The next Coffee Pop-In will be on Wednesday October 10th from 10 to 11.15. And thanks to all who helped Rosy’s Macmillan Coffee Morning to raise £188 for a great cause. Bridge and District History Society The next meeting will be on Thursday October 18th at 7.30pm in Bridge Village Hall. Geoff Downer's talk is entitled "Something Different", giving various links to Kent including three 16th century Arctic expeditions, probably the biggest financial scandal of Elizabeth l's reign and pirates! Members: £4.00, non-members £5.00 to include refreshments. Recreation Ground Working Party Saturdav 17m November 2018 There will be a working party on the recreation ground on the above date from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon. School Conyngham Lane Tel: 01227 830276 Bridge, Canterbury Email: office@bridge.kent.sch.uk Kent Web: www.bridge.kent.sch.uk CT4 SJX Monday 10”‘ September It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as the new Headteacher of Bridge & Patrixbourne School. At the time of writing this, I have only been at the school for a week, but already I am struck by the sense of community that exists and feel very privileged that I have the opportunity to be a part of this. You would all be familiar with the phrase that ’it takes a village to raise a child’ and I certainly hold true to this. As members of the community we all have a responsibility to ensure that the next generation coming through our schools are prepared for the challenges that they will face as they grow up. We achieve this by focusing not solely on their academic achievement but also by developing their values and their talents (whatever they may be). I am very keen to develop the school's links with the wider community and, in particular, the benefice and look forward to the opportunities for the children that these links will bring. It is a fact that the vast majority of our pupils are not regular church—attendees,' herein lies an opportunity to reach the children through different means and Rev. Estella and I have already discussed plans which we hope to detail further in the near future. In the meantime I would like to express my gratitude for the warm welcome I have received from those members of the community with whom I have already met and thank you in anticipation for your support for the children of Bridge & Patrixbourne CEP School. Please do feel free to get in touch via the school office if you feel that you could support the school or even have an opportunity for the school to engage in the local community. The Remembrance Day Service will be held at St Peter’s Bridge this year, but at 4pm there will be a more informal event to remember the six lost soldiers named on the War Memorial at St Mary’s Patrixbourne. The soldiers named are Capt. J. McB. Ronald, The Buffs; Lieut. 5"‘ Marquis Conyngham, South Irish Horse; C.S.M., D. Alexander, The Buffs; Sapper F.S. Brickenden R.E; Pte. C.H. Stevens K.R.R.C.; Pte. The six figures have been awarded to us by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust and are part of the ‘There but not there’ project, and their presence in the church will demonstrate what a gap the loss of six young lives left in the church, and the community, ofthe small village of Patrixbourne, at the time. The event will be an opportunity to hear the stories of the soldiers, and to remember all those lost, in words and music. There will be hymns and songs such as ‘Keep the home fires burning’. Everyone is invited to attend and if you know any descendants of the men named they will be particularly welcome. (It would be good to hear from them in advance- please contact me at dr.andreanicholson@omail.com) Any former soldiers are particularly welcome as it is hoped that the event will help fulfil the project’s aim of bringing community and veterans together. Tea and cake will be served afterwards. The silhouettes themselves will be on display in the church on Saturday 10"" ,10am- 4pm., and on the Sunday too. Please come and see the silhouettes, as the display is part of a nationwide display ofsilhouettes. ‘There but not there’ is a 2018 Armistice project hoping to raise funds for the charity ‘Remembered’, which supports six charities (The Royal Foundation; Walking with the Wounded; Combat Stress; Help for Heroes; Project Equinox— Housing Veterans and Medical Students; Commonwealth War Graves Commission). A collection for ‘Remembered’ will be made overthe weekend. For more information contact este||a|ast@gmai|.com You are warmly invited to Come and Sing Carols at St Peters, Bridge on Sunday, December 16”’ and, more particularly, to join us in the Bridge Choir, which will be specially augmented as usual for the occasion of the Carol Service. As in previous years, the choir will be supporting the congregational singing, and also adding another dimension to the familiar Christmas Readings with a varied, but not unfamiliar selection ofshort carols oftheir own. Having performed over 100 different choir carols since 2001, I have decided that it is time to repeat the set from that first year, most of which are definitely ‘old favourites’ but I hope not now hackneyed: The Truth from Above (English trad., arr. Vaughan Vlfilliams), The Holly and the Ivy (English trad., arr. Walford Davies), In the Bleak Mid-I/lflnter (Darke), Break Forth (J S Bach), The Infant King (Basque trad., arr. Vlfillcocks), In Dulci Jubilo (Pearsall). We are looking for all voices (SATB) from all age groups, and hope to welcome back many old friends as well as gain a few new enthusiasts. Some experience andlor ability to read music is necessary for the harmony parts, but not vital forthe top line. We will again keep rehearsals to a minimum, but forthat reason it is crucial that most people can make both the main rehearsals as well as the Sunday! The rehearsals will almost certainly be held in Bridge Church as follows: Thursday, December 13”‘ 7—8.30 p.m. Friday, December 14"‘ 6—7.30 p.m. Sunday, December 16”‘ 3.45-5.30 p.m. Music will be available in advance and for private study! If you are able to join us, please let me know as soon as possible on Canterbury 787994 or mim@kinos-schoo|.co.uk. I can then assess vocal balance and the viability of the programme! Vlfith thanks & best wishes Martin Miles Canterburv Food Bank A huge thank you to everyone forthe bags and bags of food and non—food that was given in at Harvest Festival for the Canterbury Food Bank. It was very much appreciated, particularly the most needed items of that moment in time which were cleaning materials, pet food, potatoes either dried or in cans and pasta sauces, plus all the other items all gratefully received. As I have written before there are 3 main bags that are put together from donations received and collated at the Collection Centre in Chestfield. These contain enough food (all UHT, tins and packet items) to sustain an adult, a 2nd adult or a child over 2, for 3 days. With care these can last longer and indeed have to as only 5 vouchers are given out in a 12 month period. Anyone needing further assistance, which helps with their own problem, is then referred on to one of many agencies in the area. What is not included in these bags are: Cleaning materials, toilet rolls, sanitary wear, pet food, confectionery, baby milks and foods, baby hygiene materials, toiletries for both male and female, toothbrushes/paste, and items from exotic larder clear outs! These are displayed on the Bonus Table which extends over 3 very long tables. Having seen the representative from the Citizens Advice Bureau (unless a voucher has already been given by another agency) and signed in to receive the necessary number of food bags, the recipients are then invited to help themselves to whatever they require from the Bonus Table providing they can carry it home or have someone on hand to help them. Being on the Bonus Table is my favourite of all roles I undertake at the Canterbury Food Bank. I get to hold the babies whilst their mothers look through and select what they need, to talk to the young and the old, the disabled and the homeless, and help them to select suitable things to take away. If you are camping out in a shop doorway or living in a car some items in the food bag are not ofany use and these are sifted through and returned for more essential and suitable items. Cleaning materials, sanitary wear and toiletries are vital to people without any money. It gives them self esteem on the outside whilst the food gives then nourishment on the in. A lot of homeless people and some families who come to us have pets — it is a major part of their lives and without money the pets go without too, adding to their owners stress. Strange but true, we do need both types of items on a regular basis. If you are having a larder clearout please check the Sell by Dates on all food items. This is first done at the Collection Centre at Chestfield but ourjob is so much easier if it is received within a 3 month date. Ifthe item is donated at a yellow bin at a supermarket then its SBD is guaranteed, but if it is donated elsewhere then it is checked carefully. I always find it quite touching that people who come to the Distribution Cafe need to be persuaded to take anything in addition to the bags of food. They tend to say it should be left for someone else to take... ‘Food For Thought’ Bridge with Patrixbourne Women's Institute The WI are holding a couple of events in Bridge Village Hall this month. On Tuesday 16 October at 7.30 pm our speaker is D Godden, an ex—cruise manager, who has promised us a humorous talk on Travel. Then, on Thursday 25 October at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, we will be hosting the Nailbourne Group Meeting. The theme we have chosen is Hallowe'en, with the competition being the best decorated pumpkin and there will also be a chance to try out armchair yoga. Nailbourne Horticultural Societv Please note that there is a change of date forthe Octobertalk. Roland Stevens will now be giving his illustrated talk entitled "The Greenhouse Story" on Tuesday 23 October (not 9 October as published in the programme). National Vedetable Societv - Kent Association For the final evening talk of this year's programme, Philip Johnson, a professional gardener, will be giving a talk on "Sweet Peas" (7.30 for 8.00 pm start) in Bridge Village Hall on Wednesday 10 October. There is a sales table and raffle and non- members are always welcome to come along to enjoy the talk. Thank vou / Goodbve After such an emotional few days Mrs Pritchard and I are finally leaving Woodpeckers Nursery. Thank you to everyone for your kind wishes, cards, flowers and presents, we were overwhelmed. You can imagine Woodpeckers has been an enormous part of my life forthe past 21 years (28 years in all at Bridge /School), I would like to say thank you to my family for all their support. It has been a team effort overthe years and I couIdn’t have done it without all those lovely ladies who have worked so hard with me. Especially my right hand Mrs Pritchard, who has been with me from the beginning. We would both like to say thank you to all the parents, families and friends who have given time, help and support overthe years as Committee Members, at Fayres, painting faces, manning stalls and baking the yummiest cakes, especially Ninon Clark, Carla Long, The Dunderdales, Margaret Clarke, Margaret Hennessy, the staff at the school and so many more. Most of all though I’II miss the main reason we are all here and that is the children, hundreds of whom have gone through Woodpeckers. I know I also speak for Mrs Pritchard when I say it’s been a privilege to watch them all grow and blossom having so much fun and laughter on the way. Thank you. Itjust leaves Teresa and l to wish Michelle and the team good luck forthe very exciting times ahead of you. If you go to \l\lhitstabIe and see an old girl striding along or sketching on the slopes take a second look, it might be me so do come over and say hello. Angie Sheppard and Teresa Pritchard [0:33] FAIRTRADE Among the many pictures and plaques on the walls of Bridge Church is a small framed certificate overthe kitchen worktop. It says ‘We are a Fairtrade Church’. 2018 marks 10 years since we achieved that status. People started thinking about fair trade as a way of reducing poverty in the developing world back in the 1970s and the Fairtrade Foundation was set up in the UK in 1992. The principle is that trading companies pay fair prices forthe goods they buy and sell, enabling the producers to earn a living wage. This includes a premium which is invested in the local community to improve living and working conditions, health, education etc. It also gives an opportunity to small producers in the developing world to engage in international trade. In orderto be able to put the Fairtrade mark on their products, companies have to provide evidence that they are fulfilling these commitments. Faith groups are key supporters of Fairtrade and more than 7,500 churches from a range of denominations are now making the connection between trade and poverty by committing to using Fairtrade products when they gathertogether. On our certificate at Bridge it says - We have committed to: use Fairtrade tea and coffee for all meetings for which we have responsibility, move forward on using other Fairtrade products, such as sugar, chocolate and biscuits, promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and through other activities where possible. We all have the power to change the world every day. Vlfith simple shopping choices we can get farmers a better deal, so they can make their own decisions, control their future and lead the dignified life everyone deserves. The annual Canterbury Fairtrade Fair is on Saturday 20th October between 10am and 3pm in St. Peter's Methodist Church Hall. There will be all kinds of Fairtrade foods and gifts to buy, as well as home-made soup and cheese lunches. Everyone welcome — do go along. For me, the whole month of November epitomises remembrance. As October ends we remember All Hallows Eve, more commonly known as Halloween, a time when traditionally bonfires were lit, and lanterns processed into Church to dispel the darkness in readiness to celebrate, as November begins, one of the most special of the Christian festivals, All Saints. This is a day when we remember all the famous Saints that have gone before us and celebrate the light they shone in the world. This is swiftly followed by the commemoration of All Souls when we remember specifically those people who have been ‘saints’ in our lives and who we want to remember before God and give thanks for. We will fittingly be celebrating All Saints and All Souls on the same day (Sunday 4 November) with a joy filled Songs of Praise for All Saints at 10am in Bekesbourne and an Evensong commemorating all those we love but see no longer at 6pm at Bridge. Everyone is welcome to attend these services. Memories of 5th November for me always conjure up happy times spent as a child bundling up in warm clothes and heading down to the meadow in the village where we lived to see the Bonfire and watch the fireworks. The perfect exciting combination of walking out in the darkness and seeking out the light as the fire crackled into life and the fireworks whizzed above our heads. I am very much looking forward to being at the Bridge and Patrixbourne CEP School PTA’s firework event on the Rec on 3"‘ November. Then of course, we come to Remembrance Sunday, a time when we remember all those who fought for our freedom, and who continue to do so. This year the Commemoration on Remembrance Sunday is more significant as it marks 100 years since the signing of the armistice agreement at the end of the 15‘ World War. It is tempting perhaps to think that maybe after 100 years its time we stopped remembering — in a recent interview Film Director Danny Boyle said as much but having worked on a project for a National Commemoration called ‘Pages of the Sea’ he went on to say “But I have changed... ..I think we should go on [remembering]. When you make that personal connection and you see their faces and heartheir backgrounds, when you see them in colour, if feels new. It feels timeless. I felt that connection to them. It felt like it would be wrong to forget them.“ We will be joining in the national commemoration with an installation of silhouettes in Patrixbourne Church as part of the ‘There but not there’ nationwide exhibition. This is just one of many Remembrance events and activities taking place in all the villages of the Benefice over the 10”’ and 11th — details of which can be found throughout this magazine so please do take the time to join in and remember if you can. When news of the Armistice spread, church bells, which had fallen silent across the UK during the First World War, rang out in celebration. Listen out for the bells across our villages. One of our young mums, Emily, led the worship. She was very ably supported by the whole family. It was delightful. Well done to all of them! The church looked beautiful. The altar, font and window ledges were all decorated with the flowers and fruits of autumn. It was a wonderful way to thank God for the harvest. The gifts of food and bedding were donated to The Women’s Refuge. This was an example of how we can share what we have with others less fortunate, which was the message we received from the bible reading. The next Songs of Praise is on 4”‘ November when we will be celebrating All Saints. It is a benefice service, so it will include a short family communion. We hope to see you there. Nicky |Ringing For Peace at Bekesbourne Church The bells will ring out at Bekesbourne Church Sunday ’|‘lth November at 'l2.30prn in unison with churches and cathedrals in villages and towns across the country to mark the ’l-00th anniversary of the end of the First World War. when the bells rang out on the nth November ‘I918 they announced the end of the war. At that time bells were at the heart of the community, marking events and communicating to people long before modern technology connected us. Bell ringing has always had a much wider function than its role in the church, but most of us today are not aware of its broad and inclusive service. More than 1400 bell ringers lost their lives in the Great War. They came from all walks of life like bell ringers do today. The Central Council of Church Bell Ringers aims to recruit 1400 new ringers to commemorate the 1400 ringers that died. Bekesbourne church has a lovely ring of 6 bells and now we also have a trained instructor to teach the art of bell ringing. We practice on Monday evenings and our aim is to ring for Sunday church services, weddings and special events. If you want more information speak to Gill Moon 832134. As in previous years, the choir will be supporting the congregational singing, and also adding another dimension to the familiar Christmas Readings with a varied, but not unfamiliar selection of short carols of their own. Having performed over 100 different choir carols since 2001, I have decided that it is time to repeat the set from that first year, most of which are definitely ‘old favourites’ but I hope not now hackneyed: The Truth from Above (English trad., arr. Vaughan Williams), The Holly and the Ivy (English trad., arr. Walford Davies), In the Bleak Mid-Winter (Darke), Break Forth (J S Bach), The Infant King (Basque trad., arr. Willcocksl, In Dulci Jubilo (Pearsa||). We are looking for all voices (SATB) from all age groups, and hope to welcome back many old friends as well as gain a few new enthusiasts. Some experience and/or ability to read music is necessary for the harmony parts, but not vital for the top line. We will again keep rehearsals to a minimum, but for that reason it is crucial that most people can make both the main rehearsals as well as the Sunday! The rehearsals will almost certainly be held in Bridge Church as follows: Thursday, December 13th 7-8.30 p.m. Friday, December 14th 6- 7.30 p.m. Sunday, December 16th 3.45-5.30 p.m. Music will be available in advance and for private study! If you are able to join us, please let me know as soon as possible on Canterbury 787994 or mjm@kings-schoo|.co.uk. I can then assess vocal balance and the viability of the programme! With thanks & best wishes Martin Miles Nailbourne Horticultural Society There is no meeting arranged for November, but to round off this years programme and to help us prepare forthe festive season, on Tuesday 4 December at 7.30 pm in Bridge Village Hall, Leigh-Anne, our local florist at Majestic Flowers (and the very popular Tulip Tearooms), has kindly agreed to entertain and inspire us with a demonstration (accompanied by step-by-step written instructions) on how to make a Christmas wreath.
