We haven't even been away for our Summer holiday yet but because of the way print deadlines fall I am writing my September magazine letter to you. So far on our ‘Summer Sundays’ in the Parish we have enjoyed an informal Communion Service each week, singing the Gloria to the tune ‘Ode to Joy’ and the Sanctus to the ‘The Skye Boat Song’. We have enjoyed interactive and creative ap- proaches to the sermon slot, with visual aids and congregational participation and time for coffee and conversation after the service, all of which, have led to many of us coming away from church on a Sunday thinking ‘yes this is what church should be about!'. But it's not just about Sundays is it? If you read the newspaper, the C of E is getting a bashing from most quarters for be- ing variously outdated, ‘woke’, sex obsessed, discriminatory, e|itest....., the list goes on. Well, what is it that they say? Don't believe everything you read in newspapers. Yes it's true that the C of E is wrangling with some of the issues that are pressing in our time, and tackling the problems of the past as well as looking to the future, just as it always has done. But in the Parishes we are also simply doing what we have al- ways done and trying to do it in the most effective way we can. Being the church in the heart of the local community, means; conducting weddings, baptisms and funerals, providing final resting places and lasting memorials for loved ones, joining in with local community events, supporting the school, visiting the sick and those in our care homes, for no purpose other than that this is what we are called to do. And when we gather together on a Sunday to celebrate the Eucharist, its not to give ourselves a pat on the back and congratulate ourselves on how well we're doing, it's to refresh ourselves in mind, body and spirit, it's to lay on God the burdens and the struggles of life that we all experience and those we carry on behalf of others, to repent of those times we have failed, to bring the prayers notjust of our- selves but of all those we encounter during the week, to hear again the word of scrip- ture which helps us to learn to be the people of God and to sing our praises. That ‘whoosh!' one gets from singing Hark the Herald, or the deep heart filled sense of love one gets from singing Silent Night, is notjust for Christmas it's an all year round thing — every Sunday in fact but funnily enough they never write that in the newspa- pers. In ‘The Message’, a modern Bible translation, Paul's words to the Philippians are translated as “Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God. Carry the light-giving Message [of God] into the night” .... ..as best as we can, with the help of God. Oscar Wilde The bulb catalogues will soon be arriving through my post box. I have told myself I will not buy any more bulbs as I have plenty saved from last year, but we will see... With a view to planting your bulbs the following timings are useful: September and October: Iris reticulata, Daffodils, Narcissus, Crocus, Grape Hyacinth, Narcissi, outdoor Hya- cinths, Crown Imperial, Snakeshead Fritillary, Alliums, Camassia and Nectaroscor- dum. November: Most of the above, plus snowdrops. Late November into December: The very best time for planting tulips to avoid Tulip Fire. Just writing this out makes me want to browse a bulb catalogue right now! I am now taking cuttings from salvias, fuchsias, pelargoniums, and favourite gerani- ums and aiming to order some seeds for next year. Chiltern Seeds is my favourite seed merchant for all things floral. They have few pictures and make no apologies for giving the Latin names, but the descriptions of the plants make for good reading. My big problem is in ordering more than I actually need... Meanwhile, enjoy the many butterflies and bees in your gardens before the majority start to disappear. A small shallow dish with a few pebbles and a piece of slate as a getaway, will ensure bees and indeed wasps, do not drown. The birds will appre- ciate a bath too and my old stone bird bath has been well used in the summer with the shortage of puddles in hot dry spells. The Autumnal Garden is just beginning to get going and I hope the weather is kind to us throughout the month to ensure it continues. This my favourite season, if for no other reasons than for the colours, the fullness of the flowers and the fruits that are ripening. :3 September bees love Buddleia, Verbena Bonariensis, Single flowered Dahlias, Salvia, Fuchsia, Ivy flowers, Single Cosmos, Japanese Anemones, Golden Rod, Sedum, Asters ‘I5 Friends of St Peter’s Church, Bridge lI0l‘l‘l3l3 & CAKE & CONCERT Saturday 16"‘ September 10:15 to 11 :30 Musical Morning with Canterbury Saxophony Image by brgfx on Freepik Come and hear the music of this unique local Saxo- phone Quartet, ranging from Gershwin to Reynolds and Goodwin to Hirsch with Matt Miles (who teaches music at Bridge and Patrixbourne School) on Tenor Sax, Ken peers on Soprano Sax, Eduard Heyning on Alto Sax, and Peter Cook on Baritone Sax. It de- scribes how major events from the dissolution of the monasteries to the Second World War, its aftermath and beyond, changed the lives of its citizens. The later expansion of higher education and tourism was about to bring further change, giving the city we know today. No membership fee, £4.00 at the door to include refreshments. All welcome. The talk by Anne Churchill is ‘The Science of Fragrance and our Sense of Smell — why fragrances are so important in everyday life’. On Tuesday 5th September, Anna Ev- ans, of ‘Anna's Country Flowers‘, will be giving a talk with a demon- stration of two or three floral arrangements using sustainably grown flowers from her flower farm, near Chilham. Many of you will remember we had a very enjoyable Summer evening's visit to the farm a few years ago. It should be an evening to look fon/vard to and we hope members and non members will come and support the event. The arrangements made by Anna will be raffled at the end of the meeting. The entry fee of £2 for members and £4 for non mem- bers, will include refreshments. All are most Welcome! 23 Nailbourne Scout Group news We hope everyone has had a lovely summer. Nailbourne Scouts have had a well- earned break, ready to start fresh in September. We have three main pieces of news to report. The first rather exciting news is that our Explorers group will be starting in the sec- ond week of September on Wednesday evenings in Barham Village Hall, led by Phil Last with able support from some of our other Nailbourne volunteers. We have an exciting programme ahead and can’t wait to get started! For more information or if you would like to join (or volunteer), please email us on the address below. The second piece of news is our now-yearly Barham Garage Safari, happening on Saturday 23 September from 10am to 2pm. As well as some bargains to be had, we will also have car-washing, a raffle and refreshments at the village hall, and a ‘treasure trail’ for children around the village. Please keep an eye out on our Face- book page for more information. Barham residents who would like their garage to be included will be able to pick up a form from the village shop from 21 August. The final and very sad news is that we have been unable to find a replacement Bea- ver leader, and unless anything changes, we will be unable to offer a Beavers group in September. This is a huge loss for the unit and for local children. We are entirely reliant on volunteers and we are hugely grateful for the excellent Beaver leadership from Nick (Baloo) and Martyne May over the last few years. If you or anyone you know might be able to offer your time to lead or help with Beavers, please let us know as soon as possible. Full training will be given — we are a friendly, supportive group! - and no experience is necessary. It would also be possible to share the lead- ership position. Please help us to save our Beavers! Nailbourne Scout Group welcomes both boys AND girls and meets during term time as follows: (Beavers (6-8 years) — Wednesdays, 5.30-6.30pm, Barham Village Hall) Cubs (8-10 years) - Wednesdays, 6.45-8.00pm, Barham Village Hall Scouts (10-14 years) - Fridays, 6.30—8.00pm, Denton Village Hall Explorers (14-18 years) - Wednesdays, 7.30—9.00pm, Barham Village Hall Please note that the venue is subject to frequent change, particularly in the summer, when we meet outside as often as possible!
