February 2024
Dear Friends
And just like that....... as the saying goes, we are already one twelfth of the year into
2024! | don’t really make New Year’s resolutions but one of the things | have tried to
encourage myself to do in the long days of January (which let’s face it can be a bit
bleak!) is to look out for and note the moments of joy in the everyday.
There was so much joy at Christmas as we filled churches, pubs and village halls
throughout our Benefice with carols, mince pies and people all in honour of the birth
of the one who came to lift us out of darkness and to show us the light and my aim in
January has been to find ways to keep this going as long as possible with an inten-
tional noting of joyful moments each day.
| wonder if you joined us at all over Christmas whether in church or somewhere out in
the community, and | wonder if, when you did, you felt some joy, perhaps in the sing-
ing, in the seasonal refreshments or just in being together with others? In church we
seek, through our worship together, prayer, listening to scripture, singing hymns and
sharing coffee and chat, to continue to renew each week the joy that comes from en-
gaging in these simple things. Things which keep us connected to the God who out
of love for us sent his Son to gather us into relationship with him.
This year Lent comes upon us quickly and Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day.
The time of Lent has a reputation for being sombre and self-denying but at its root is
the aim of drawing closer to the God who loves us. The 40-day period modelled on
Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness which is Jesus’ immediate response to the
moment of his baptism when he hears the voice of God which calls him ‘beloved’.
And so | wonder if you know what it means to feel truly beloved...... Because in our
world today, to love or to feel love is so often seen as transactional — we go about
right from when we are very young seeking the approval of parents, care givers,
friends, teachers, co-workers etc. In a world that seems to say, you are only lovable
if...... you achieve this, behave like that, look like this or look like that.....in a world
that is quick to ‘cancel’ us when we go astray or make mistakes, as we are bound to
do since none of us is perfect.
And so much of our hurt, our trauma and our pain comes through those relationships
where we don’t feel the love....or where it seems the love has run out. Or where per-
haps we are simply looking in the wrong places for healing or validation. Chrisian
spirituality tells us that from the moment we were merely a thought in the mind of
God, each of us were marked “beloved” as the very core of our identity. It’s not simp-
ly something about us, it’s our identity. There’s nothing we’ve done to earn it. There’s
nothing we've done or that’s been done to us that can take it away. Beloved is who
we are.....and we don’t need cards and flowers to know this.
Beloved is where we begin. It is who we are, it is who we are called to be in the
world. So this Lent, may we slow down to hear the voices of God swirling around
us whispering, you dear one, you are my beloved and may you find the strength
and courage to bring the truth of your belovedness fully to the world.
Yours in Christ

“The Powers Behind the Thrones — Women of the First Millennium.”
Imogen Corrigan’s talk will show that though we may think women only came into
their own in the 20" Century, our Anglo — Saxon sisters had a surprising freedom in
the law. They could own land, make wills, sue and be sued. In this talk we discover
the influential women of the first thousand years AD.

Looking back, our Christmas Party was a very enjoyable event, even
though it now seems a long way off!
Unfortunately, our January speaker cancelled at the last minute. How-
ever, as there were a number of matters on the agenda to be dis-
cussed, it was decided not to try and find a replacement speaker. Also,
Philip Wicker was already scheduled to come and explain the im-
portance of the Parish Plan.
In February, a member from KCC Safer Road Users Team, will give a
‘Mature Drivers Presentation’. This should prove beneficial to all road
users, and we hope will attract a full audience. The meeting will take
place, as usual, in the Village Hall at 2pm.
WI welcomes anyone interested in becoming a member, or coming
along firstly as a guest for
a ‘taster’. For more details, please contact the Secretary on 01227-

The service this year will be at Canterbury Baptist Church,
St George’s Place (by the bus stop for Waitrose) on Friday
1°! March 2024 at 11am.
The Christian women of Palestine prepared this service before the
war in Gaza started last October and it highlights the challenges faced
by Palestinian women and how they are working and praying for a
deeper understanding between all who share the Holy Land.
This could not be a more important time for all of us to share in their
hopes and prayers.
This annual event was once known as the Women’s World Day of
Prayer, but it is now a day for everyone and all are warmly invited to
the service, followed by lunch kindly provided by the members of the
Baptist church.

NAILBOURNE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
Our next meeting, will be on Tuesday 13th February, 7.30 pm
at Bridge Village Hall. William and Louise Friend will be pre-
senting an illustrated talk, "Mediterranean Plants for the East
Kent Coast".
Considering many of us have a problem dry border or a patch in
our gardens during the summer months at least, this talk should
be of interest and provide useful advice on suitable plants
and planting.
We hope that you will be able to join us. There will be a small en-
try fee to include light refreshments.
Bridge Art Group
New members are invited to join this small (maximum 10)
‘self help’ Art group. We meet 10am -12noon on Mondays at
the Bridge village recreation ground pavilion. Current mem-
bers are ‘hobby artists’ of varying ability undertaking their
own work and offering each other support, advice and
occasionally expertise. We have no teacher though members
are encouraged to introduce ideas, themes or items of inter-
est that may stimulate others in their work. We only charge
enough to cover the hire of the venue, currently £3 each per
week (or £2 if paying in advance). Our regular members
find that the two hours a week helps to maintain their
‘creative momentum’ and several of us enter work in the an-
nual ‘Art in Bridge’ Exhibition.

benefit from the group please contact:

Nailbourne Scout Group news
We hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. Our sections have recently
started back after Christmas, having had a busy month in the lead-up! We had a
Christmas service at the church in Bridge for all sections, including our affiliated Ex-
plorers section, and we also delivered the annual Scout Christmas Post to houses in
Bridge — many thanks to all the villagers who supported us with this fundraising activ-
ity.
Our new Beaver team is now in full swing and arranging some fantastic sessions; a
highlight was celebrating St Andrew’s Day by making tartan and having a go at some
traditional dancing! Cubs started working on their Personal Safety Badge, learning
how to be safe at a railways station and why railway lines are dangerous. They also
looked at the Fireworks Safety Code and role-played how to behave around bonfires
and fireworks. Scouts are gearing up for the new term, having selected patrol lead-
ers; they are boosting their “Youth Shaped’ Scouting activities to ensure that Scouts
help in deciding what they do in sessions, developing great teamwork and leadership
skills along the way. Explorers are particularly focused on being youth-led. After lots
of navigation work and geocaching last term, plus a Christmas hike, they’ve started
planning this term and are hoping to include lots of adventurous activities. First off
will be climbing at F51 in Folkestone!
Our next major event will be our AGM on Wednesday 28 February from 6pm at Bar-
ham Village Hall. This will be an open meeting, where children will also be showcas-
ing what the different sections get up to. Everyone is welcome (not just parents and
committee members), especially if you’d like to find out more about Nailbourne Scout
Group.
As always, we welcome new people to our groups and we are always looking for vol-
unteers, both behind the scenes and helping in sessions. Please contact us for more
details.
Nailbourne Scout Group welcomes both boys AND girls and meets during term
time as follows:
Beavers (6-8 years) — Wednesdays, 5.30-6.30pm, Barham Village Hall
Cubs (8-10 years) — Wednesdays, 6.45-8.00pm, Barham Village Hall
Scouts (10-14 years) — Fridays, 6.30-8.00pm, Barham Village Hall
Explorers (14-18 years) - Wednesdays, 7.30—9.00pm, Bridge Village Hall
Please note that the venue is subject to frequent change, particularly in the
summer, when we meet outside as often as possible!
For more information on joining Beavers, Cubs or Scouts or volunteering,
please email Nick Gore at skipnailbourne@gmail.com or visit our Facebook
page (www.facebook.com/Nailbourne-Scout-Group-public-108853207216429).

Happy ‘Ewe Year at Chalkpit Farm
It’s been a busy start to the new year down at Chalkpit Farm, with
lots going on to prepare for the spring. We've also been preparing at
the farm shop too with new wedding flower collections, January

planting before the spring.
We also have some stunning flower arrangements and bouquets in
store and online, including some new collections designed specifical-
ly for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day which arrives early this year
on Sunday 10" March. With that in mind, feel free to pop down to the
farm to see what we have in store or pop online to order your hops
or something special for the one you love!

= In your garden with Marie Gold s We
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee
Muhammad Ali, 1964
Head Gardener and Author, Ben Dark, has modified this to ‘Walk like a
Butterfly, Smell like a Bee’. And moreover he has used it to good effect in
his book on front gardens in one particular South London street. His hy-
pothesis is to flit around as a pollinator might, and allthough we will never
be able to read the signals, as the insects can, we may find on a sunny day
that familiar roads take on a new dimension.
We can get inspiration from other people’s front gardens and the basis of
my own front garden was set in place in the ‘90s with the TV programme,
‘Front Gardens’. Gay Search was the presenter and she was at the time
well known for her work with the late, great Geoff Hamilton, a pioneer of
organic gardening.
Her mantra was that a front garden should give you joy when you return to
it, no matter what month of the year, and as a bonus to give pleasure to
passers by. Easy access for the postman (and the delivery people in our
current times) is a must, yet it should be a haven for insects and butterflies
and be of interest for as much of the year as possible.
In these long dark evenings, that only this time of the year can provide, |
suggest you look at your own front patch, or if without one, then consider
the window boxes and hanging baskets that could be utilised. Read
books, especially Ben Dark’s, who invites you to have a careful look at the
unfurling of a snowdrop - along with other well known delights in the 19%
front gardens he passes in “The Grove”.
None of my own ideas are unique, but garnered from what | have seen and
often copied. Gay Search was in Elham a few years back and | met and
thanked her for the inspiration she had given me all those years ago.

Nailbourne Scout Group news
As always, it’s been a busy month, before the Christmas preparations begin! Beavers
have been learning about fossils and Harvest traditions and have been undertaking
some very cool science experiments, including dissecting owl pellets (with thorough
handwashing, of course!). Cubs have turned each other into mummies (using toilet
roll and imagination!), made spooky pine cone spiders and role-played bats looking
for moths, after learning about echolocation. Scouts have been working on their skills
challenge badge and their navigation skills, as well as getting ready for a ‘round the
world’ Christmas party to explore different cultures and traditions. They also honed
their sewing skills, making poppies for our Remembrance wreaths. Explorers have
made willow wreaths, played lots of games, worked on their survival skills and helped
to plan their own sessions for this term, including an exciting new outdoor meeting
location.
Recent events include the Explorers’ first camp — this was an expedition camp in Es-
sex, where Explorers had a great time chopping wood, building fires, cooking their
dinner and night hiking, despite the weather not being as kind as it could be! On Hal-
loween, Explorers went door to door in Barham, collecting donations for the food
bank. And on Remembrance Sunday, young people from all sections took part ina
short parade through Bridge, before joining in the Remembrance service.
As we move towards Christmas, all sections will be taking part in plenty of fun Christ-
massy activities, including our annual whole-group Christmas service at Bridge
Church. We will also be delivering
Scout Post in Bridge on 17 December — look out for our post box in Bridge Stores!
As always, we welcome new people to our groups and we are always looking for vol-
unteers, both behind the scenes and helping in sessions. Please contact us for more
details. Nailbourne Scout Group welcomes both boys AND girls and meets during
term time as follows:
(Beavers (6-8 years) — Wednesdays, 5.30—6.30pm, Barham Village Hall)
Cubs (8-10 years) - Wednesdays, 6.45—8.00pm, Barham Village Hall
Scouts (10-14 years) — Fridays, 6.30—-8.00pm, Denton Village Hall
Explorers (14-18 years) — Wednesdays, 7.30—9.00pm, Bridge Village Hall
Please note that the venue is subject to frequent change, particularly in the summer,
when wemeet outside as often as possible!
For more information on joining Beavers, Cubs or Scouts or volunteering, please
email NickGore at skipnailbourne@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page

Nailbourne Horticultural Society
We warmly invite members and non-members to our Christmas Social meeting on
Tuesday 5th December at the usual time of 7.30 pm at Bridge Village Hall. There will
be a presentation entitled, ‘Kent under Attack from Asian Hornets!’ by Lisa Jenkins,
Seasonal Bee Inspector, on a subject that has been causing serious concern and
one which has been covered by the media recently. It should be of interest and im-
portance and something we all need to be made aware of. On a lighter note though,
not forgetting it is our Christmas Social, we will be serving glass of festive drink and
nibbles included in the entry fee of £5, plus a ticket to the Christmas raffle. In addition
there will be jars of honey for sale from a local beekeeper. We hope you will come
and support this last event of the year as well as help celebrate a very successful
one for our Society.
Nailbourne Horticultural Society - Annual General Meeting & Talk on Suc-
cessional Planting
We start year 2024 with our AGM in Bridge Village Hall on Tuesday 23 January at
7.30 pm. Subscriptions for the year are due then, at £8 for single and £15 for joint/
family membership. If you are interested in gardening and related matters, now is a
good time to join when you can enjoy a full and varied programme of interesting talks
as well as an afternoon outing, not forgetting our Spring and Summer shows, the
schedules for which will be available. New and old members as well as those who
wish to join our friendly committee will be warmly welcomed. So, please encourage
your friends to come along and help the oldest Society in the Village to continue to
thrive! Following the brief AGM we will welcome our guest speaker, Kevin Tooher,
aka Sir Plantalot, who will give a talk ‘Successional Planting’. Kevin has been a lec-
turer in horticulture at Hadlow College and at Brogdale. He currently runs his own
horticultural courses. We very much look forward to seeing you. Refreshments will be
available.

In the Bleak Midwinter
Christina Rossetti
Christina Georgina Rossetti was an English writer of romantic, devotional and chil-
dren's poems. She was the youngest child in an extraordinarily gifted family with 3
siblings, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as he was generally known, one of the
founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
The text of this Christmas poem, first published in 1872, has been set to music many
times. Made famous by both Gustav Holst and Harold Darke in the early 20th cen-
tury.
In the poems, her vision of an earth which stands ‘ashamed and dumb’ because it is
‘exposed and valued at man’s worth’ seems to predict human destruction of the
natural world that followed in the wake of the industrial development. Little could
she realise how this destruction was going to continue and escalate in our own
times.
What does midwinter conjure up for a gardener? For my part it is mainly centred
indoors with seasonal plants: cyclamen, poinsettia, and early, forced, paperwhite
narcissus bulbs. The green leafy plants that have had a good summer need special
care ina cold porch or conservatory. Succulents can take the cold and seem to sur-
vive in both the house and under protection in the greenhouse. The outdoor plants
must now look after themselves, as all precautions have been taken, apart from un-
expected winds, snow and heavy rain which may cause problems. Bird feeders and
the bird bath will need to be regularly topped up — but the hedgehog house is still
awaiting an occupant as | write this...
Bee identification has suddenly become very easy as there should only be 2 bee spe-
cies flying at this time of year: buff-tailed bumblebees and the very occasional hon-
eybee — find a log or two and place them out of the way so there is a small habitat
available. And the finale of my year of the bee, a book: ‘What a Bee Knows’ by En-
tomologist, Stephen Buchmann.
Happy Christmas everyone.
December and January bees, not hibernating, will appreciate:
Mahonia and Ivy flowers, Helleborus Foetidus, Winter heathers, aconites, and snow-
drops

Bridge with Patrixbourne Womens Institute
The changed time for our meetings to afternoons has proved popular, as members
prefer daylight to dark evenings. In October we had a most interesting meeting,
when ‘Adventures in Stained Glass and Decorative Art’ was the subject of a talk giv-
en by Julia Till. This was followed by a talk in November on ‘Christmas Cards’ and
was a popular subject at this time of year.
Our usual Christmas Party is on Friday, 15th December at 2pm, in the Village Hall,
when it is hoped that many members will be able to come and enjoy a social time,
with in-house entertainment some seasonal food and drink.
In January our speaker, Joyce Coomber-Sewell will be talking on ‘This is Me’ — so it
will be interesting to hear what she has to say! WI welcomes anyone interested in
becoming a member, or coming along firstly as a guest for a ‘taster’. For more de-
tails, please contact the Secretary on 01227-830606.

Nailbourne Scout Group news
We hope that everyone had a good summer! At the time of writing, all the Nailbourne
Scout Group sections are on their summer break, and our leaders and volunteers are
having a well-earned rest. However, by the time you read this, we will be back and in
full swing, preparing for our biggest fundraising event of the year: the Barham Gar-
age Safari!
The Garage Safari will be held in Barham (of course!) on Sunday 15 September from
Yam until 20m. Maps of all the houses taking part will be available from the village
hall from 9am (and no earlier!), to allow our stallholders time to get ready. We will
also be serving refreshments: hot and cold drinks and cakes, plus breakfast baps,
which will be available from 8.45am until they run out! We will be selling raffle tickets
and already have some great prizes donated, including from Simpsons, Broome
Park, Smith & Co and The Jackdaw, among others. In addition, there will be a car
wash and a free scavenger hunt to keep the children amused. Profits will be going to
Nailbourne Scout Group, so it's a brilliant opportunity to grab yourself some bargains
and help a great cause while you're at it!
Barham residents who would like their driveway to be included in the Garage Safari
can pick up a form from Barham Village Stores. These need to be returned in an en-
velope with £5 to the box in the shop by Thursday 12 September, to ensure that your
house can be included.
We may also still have some spaces left in the hall when you read this — these are
primarily for those local residents who live on the outskirts or who haven't got a suita-
ble driveway. To cover the costs of the hall hire, these will be slightly more expensive
at £10. If you would like a table in the hall, please contact us ideally via our Facebook
page or on the email below.
If you are a local business (or just a kind individual!) who would like to help by donat-
ing a raffle prize, we would be very grateful! All prize donors will be credited on Face-
book and at the event. If you can help, please contact us again ideally via Facebook
or at the email below.
Finally, we hope to see as many of you as possible at the Garage Safari, either as
stallholders or simply enjoying the event. There will be lots to do and lots of bargains
to be had!

The last talk in our summer programme, ‘Do you like chocolate?’ was given by mem-
ber Sarah Lane, who told us about the history of chocolate, going back to Christo-
pher Columbus, who first introduced chocolate to Britain. Sarah had brought along
many different types of chocolate and members were invited to try and compare
them, which proved to be a very popular and interesting exercise!
Our Summer Outing took place on Tuesday, 20" August. A coach was organised to
take us firstly to Pashley Manor and in the afternoon to Great Dixter — both venues
having beautiful, but very different gardens. A lovely day was enjoyed by all.
Our next meeting will be on the Tuesday, 17" September at 7.30pm in the Village
Hall. This will be the first of our Winter Programme and will be a members’ social
evening.
Looking ahead, on Friday 18" October we are holding an Open Meeting when
Esme Clarke, a Solicitor from Furley Page, will be giving a talk entitled ‘Do | need a
Lasting Power of Attorney?’ As this may well be the subject of interest to many
people outside W.I., anyone who would like to come along will be welcome. There
will be notices around the village and on the village Facebook site in due course.
WI always welcomes new members. For more details, please contact the President,

October 2024
Dear Friends,
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:”
so begins the 3 Chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. As | write we have
just had the first taste of autumn with some chilly mornings, and dewy grass and we
have all had a good moan about the sudden change of temperature and the unrelia-
bility of the British weather as we like to do. Seasons though are important, not just
the temporal seasons marked out by our weather conditions but the seasons of life
as the writer of Ecclesiastes goes on to say.
This passage from the Bible is immortalised in a song covered by many artists but
probably most memorably The Byrds and is often chosen by funeral families where
their loved one has lived a long life as it articulates the variety of life that anyone who
lives a long time has the privilege of experiencing. However, | think it holds deep rele-
vance for all of us, regardless of the age or stage of life we are in.
In the span of life, we will find ourselves doing a variety of tasks and experiencing a
variety of emotions, and we will inevitably see and/or experience birth and death,
planting and harvesting, killing and healing, tearing down and building up, weeping
and laughing, mourning and dancing, throwing stones and gathering stones, embrac-
ing and refraining from embracing, searching and giving up as lost, saving and throw-
ing away, tearing apart and sowing together, being silent and speaking, loving and
hating, and warring and enjoying peace. The world is a place of difficulty and enjoy-
ments, and we will have our share of both. Our emotions will go up and down, and as
times change, the purposes of things will change while other things must go. New
things will come, things will pass on, challenges will arise, and times of peace may be
found. Such is the transient and changeable nature and reality of life on earth. And
the point? Well the point being that God is over all of this and that ultimately life in
eternity won’t have such ups and downs.
This October as Autumn begins, | wonder if we can find a peace in reflecting on the
whole of life in the terms described by the writer of Ecclesiastes? An acceptance that
there will always be circumstances beyond our control and that in life, taking the
rough with the smooth is the point and perfection is always an illusion.
Last month we came with both sorrow and joy to the funeral of our dear Margaret
Clarke who had made such a special contribution to the life of our communities. Sor-
row that she has died and is no longer with us, and joy that she is now received into
the glory of eternity, but also with deep gratitude for all that she gave in her life
among us, not because life for her had always been perfect but because life for her,
had been a life of ups and downs and yet she always knew that God was in it with
her every step of the way.
May we too, continue our walk through the seasons life, with the peace that this
knowledge brings.
LskioLaor

THANK YOU!
A huge thank you to all the people who welcomed visitors, rode or
walked on 14th September to raise sponsor money for the Friends of
Kent Churches. At the time of printing the final amount raised across
all five churches was still being calculated but well done to the support-
ers of Patrixbourne church whose sponsorship helped us to raise over
£250 for St Mary’s.

During WW2, Churchill set up a network of discrete teams of local vol-

Bridge area. Jim Gascoyne discovered that his parents were volun-
teers and has researched this little-known aspect of the war.

We had an enjoyable meeting in September with 10 members present. Our recent
stall at Ickham Fair and our Elvis in the garden afternoon raised over £500 in aid of
the Poppy Appeal. Thanks to those who helped and of course to Elvis and his back-
ing group!
We are getting ready for this year's Poppy Appeal in November and will be seeking
volunteers to man our stall outside the 4 villages shop. You do not have to be a
branch member and anyone interested can ring on our Poppy Organiser Steve Rees
01227 720328 or Vice Chairman Barbara Hunt 01227 472023 or any of the other
numbers in the branch notice board outside the hall.
As always, we are looking for new members to join the branch. Please contact any

The Society's next meeting will be on Tuesday 8th October, 7.30 pm at Bridge Village Hall. Our speaker

subject that should be of interest to many of us who would like to know more about the beneficial proper-
ties of plants. We look forward to seeing you. There will be a small entry fee to include light refreshments.
Everyone is most welcome!

November 2024
Dear Friends,
| wonder whether you feel that life is just a period of time or whether you see it as
something of a journey? Last weekend | was asked to give the Homily at Evensong
on Sunday. The brief was no more than five minutes, a homily rather than a sermon,
more of a ‘thought for the day’ and the theme ‘Journeying with others’. Here’s a short
precis of the talk | gave in case you missed it. | wonder if you have ever had the ex-
perience of a regular commute perhaps to your place of work?
In my life before motherhood and ordination | had a couple of goes at commuting
from North Kent to London by train for work experience as a teenager and later by
coach for a placement as part of my law degree. In my first proper job as a Confer-
ence Administrator based near London Victoria, | commuted again, by train from
North Kent to London, around London on tube trains, and around the world a little on
airplanes. Each time journeying with people who were basically strangers with no
more in common perhaps than our direction of travel.
In the context of the daily commute, who you are matters almost not at all, what mat-
ters is where you are going and whether you might get there on time. Likewise it mat-
ters not whether the people in the metal box with you, think like you do, or act like
you do, or care like you do, and yet for that moment you share an experience of jour-
neying together.
Seeking a connection with your fellow commuters may happen over time. If you al-
ways take the same train, always sit roughly in the same carriage, you may get to
know others who do likewise. But in the more fleeting sporadic journeys, it became
my experience that rarely did we engage with one another unless the journey was
disrupted in some way. We might exchange an eye roll if the train is held at a signal,
have a brief conversation about lateness if the delay is a bit more significant. But if
the journey were terminated and the dreaded ‘Replacement Bus Service’ brought into
play....... well then we become a team. As the train limps into the next station, off
we’d go in a pack, our carriage against the rest of the world, determined to get on
that bus!
In Ministry, one often comes into relationship with people as a result of a disruption in
their lives, illness, or bereavement perhaps but not always sad things, welcoming a
new child in baptism or marrying a couple....... and this got me wondering, perhaps
there is something we can all learn from the ‘journeying with’ of the daily commute
which says, it doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like, where you’re from or
what your job is, but we’re all trying to head in roughly the same direction and when
something happens to disrupt our journey, that’s when we need to stick together
more.
The World perhaps feels like a disruptive place at the moment. But imagine what it
would like if our community, or even our nation could learn to do that? To be a com-
munity which says, it doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like, where you’re
from or what your job is, what matters is the direction of our journey of life together,
and | would add, into the heart of God, and when anything happens to disrupt that,
well then that’s when we need each other more.
Yours in Christ

Our fabulous local swifts ...and their uncertain future.
In the Elham valley, during the summer months, we are still blessed with swifts but
seemingly, not for much longer. Their numbers are diminishing rapidly; a 66% reduc-
tion in England since 1995. Added to the red list of Birds of Conservation Concern in
2021 they are now officially ‘endangered’ and in need of urgent help.
I’ve been involved in helping to survey swift numbers in east Kent for the last five
years and unfortunately, for this fascinating and iconic bird of summer, it is a sad
story of continual decline. In Kent we estimate that numbers are dropping by approx-
imately 10% pa, it won’t be long before they disappear altogether. Kingston has only
one nesting pair left — in the south facing eaves of our church and no ‘screaming
parties’ of non-breeding birds looking for future nest sites. This obviously does not
bode well for Kingston’s swift population. Bishopsbourne, we believe, has three nest-
ing pairs in the eaves of the church and usually a small party of screaming swifts
flying sorties around the building. Patrixbourne has one of the strongest colonies of
any of our surveyed churches (circa eight nests) but there is little evidence of nesting
swifts in Bridge. Barham is faring reasonably well with around five nests and non-
breeding birds flying overhead but at Elham, sadly, swifts have completely disap-
peared from the church and the village.
20
Swifts choose to nest in crevices in buildings, they do not construct external nests
(like swallows and house martins, for example) but rely on little access points to build
their nest inside a tiny space, not visible from the outside. They pair for life and return
to the same nest year after year, raising their young in silence and leaving barely any
evidence of having been in residence. They live their lives on the wing — they are aer-
ial insectivores so they catch their prey on the wing, they eat and drink on the wing,
they mate on the wing and they even sleep on the wing by shutting down one hemi-
sphere of their brain! The only time they land is to enter their nest and raise their
young each year from May to July. They don’t breed until they are approximately
three years old, so they spend their first few years completely airborne. They have
short stumpy legs since they hardly ever use them but phenomenal wings — they are
our fastest bird in level flight reaching speeds of 69mph!
They are the most remarkable birds which now face many challenges the most seri-
ous being climate change, a lack of insects for food and a paucity of nesting sites;
our modern buildings make no allowance for nesting birds and older buildings are
fully renovated with nooks and crannies all blocked up. One way we can help is to
provide a nesting space by means of a specially designed nest box, or use of ‘swift
bricks’ on new buildings or retrofitted on old, or special (cheap and easy) adaptations
to modern soffits. There are
plenty of good ideas on the
website swift-
conservation.org.
We have recently established
the ‘Canterbury District Swift
Initiative’, to publicise the plight
of this fabulous species and to
try to persuade the council,
home owners and others to pro-
vide potential nesting sites for
swifts. Please do join our Fa-
cebook group!
And please do come along to
our next event on November
25" in Canterbury.
Please feel free to get in touch
with any questions or com-
ments. Also, | would love to
hear from older residents who
remember more swifts in our
villages, let’s hope we don’t lose
them for our grandchildren.

Canterbury in 1641? Professor Jackie Eales
This talk explores Canterbury society in the prelude to and during the
first English Civil War, taking as its starting point the 1641 poll tax. We
shall meet city residents, members of the mayor and corporation, cleri-
cal personnel and those who might have seen themselves as mem-
bers of the Middling sort.
No membership fee. £4.00 at the door to include refreshments. All
welcome.

Nailbourne Scout Group news
By the time you read this, Nailbourne Scout Group will have been back from our
summer break for a couple of months and already be preparing for Christmas! Bea-
vers have been learning their names in braille, playing sports and doing lots of fun
science stuff, like paper marbling, baking soda volcanoes and plaster of Paris leaf
prints. Cubs have been working on their Skills Challenge Award, learning things like
changing a lightbulb and ironing their neckerchief, playing badminton, making (and
tasting!) smoothies, testing materials by dropping (and trying not to break!) an egg
and taking part in team games. Scouts have been learning bushcraft skills at Walder-
chain Wood, using their knife skills to create an installation for the Artists Open
House series as part of Canterbury Arts Festival. They’ve recently welcomed some
new members and now have a troop of over 20 young people. Explorers have been
making shelters in the woods, made a Rube Goldberg machine (think Wallace and
Gromit!), visited Whitemills Aqua Park and are currently planning their upcoming quiz
(see below).
Our Barham Garage Safari in September was a great success, raising over £800 for
our funds. Many thanks to all the villagers, visitors and businesses who supported us
by having a stall, purchasing refreshments and raffle tickets, and donating prizes.
Upcoming events start with our Remembrance Parade through Bridge on Remem-
brance Sunday, ahead of the service at St Peter’s Church. On 30 November, Explor-
ers will be holding a fundraising quiz in Bridge School hall, with all questions written
by the Explorers themselves. This will be open to everyone — the more, the merrier!

Please keep an eye on our Facebook page or email explorerersnail-
bourne@gmail.com for more details and how to book. It will also incorporate our
AGM, so it’s a great opportunity to come and find out a little more about how we
work!
On that note, we are still in need of volunteers to lead and help in our sessions, with
Beavers and Explorers in particular need of support (both taking place on a Wednes-
day evening). Scouting offers many benefits for our young people and we want to be
able to continue to offer this service for our area’s young people, but we are entirely
reliant on volunteers.
Nailbourne Scout Group welcomes both boys AND girls and meets during term
time as follows:
Beavers (6-8 years) — Wednesdays, 5.30-6.30pm, Barham Village Hall
Cubs (8-10 years) — Wednesdays, 6.45—-8.00pm, Barham Village Hall
For information on Explorers, please contact Phil Last at explorersnail-

Yvette West
Sadly Yvette West died peacefully on 13 October. She first moved to Bridge in 1958
- starting at the top of Bridge Hill, then to the newly built Riverside Close, then half
way up the hill to Meadow Close. Many of you may remember her as a long term
resident, or from her frequent walks around the village, playing at the tennis club or
simply talking to strangers at the bus stop! | myself was born in 1960 at Bridge, at-
tended the primary school and did not leave until 1978. Both Yvette and myself will
always retain a strong sense of “community” attachment to Bridge and the people
living there. A small celebration will be held in Bridge for family and close friends.
